View Full Version : power top...will it wear out?

I'm just wondering if the power top motors will wear out and or break if I use it too much? IE if I put it back up everytime I get out and then lower it upon getting back in...I don't always put it up, but depending where in town I am and how long I will be long I sometimes will end up raising/lowering it several times a day...
Should the motors last? I guess I'm just not sure how much they should be able to take before needing replacement- as I'm sure it's not @ all cheap to fix.

thx

I have been using the top on my '73 mustang and no complaints here. Original motors, etc. I put it up and take it down everytime I park.

Nah, use it as you want to. It's covered under warranty for a while anyway, but you'll be fine. When I had my Z3, if it wasn't raining, that top went down, that's why God created heated seats for the Winters, and A/C for the summers.... Enjoy your car!

Is it mechanical? :D

I have ruined more things trying NOT to use them than I have using them.

Rock on, and I'm sure used power top motors will start showing up in the various channels.

I use my powertop like you do...up and down at whim. that's what the biatch is for. I guess the only ill effect would be that you are most likely not putting that blanket on each time you're lowering...well, $120 every three years isn't that bad to replace the plastic.

z4 has a glass rear window = no need for a blanket

but no I don't use one on the z3 either...too much hassle, I'll buy a new window if I scratch it too much somehow

Have any of you guys replaced the window on a Z3 yet? How much did it cost, and could you swap it out yourself? I need to be doing it on my M soon.

it is a rather cumbersome DIY but instructions are available here. search in the z3 forum. it has been discussed there. the clear plastic costs $120 and it takes an hour.

yeah I was an avid window blanket user for the first year, after that, I was just like "screw it", if I want the top down, it goes down when I'm at a red light in traffic, no more prep work, etc...

Glass rear window and no boot to install in the Z4 = that top would be up and down 30 times a day for me.... :D
