View Full Version : Ok, so I'm a BIG Dork!
vjlax18 04-13-2004, 09:47 AM I came into work late today so that I could go to the Harbo Freight Retail Store Grand Opening. :embarrasm
It's all of .5miles from my house, and I can really see it being a cause of problems in my marriage. :stickoutt
But I just use the WWTTD idea, and go with it. ARHH ARHH ARHH, MORE POWER :evil2

Ron17 04-13-2004, 09:48 AM You should have some WWTTD bracelets made.

I want to get a cordless impact wrench like JVs and a new jack!
vjlax18 04-13-2004, 09:50 AM There were 2 lines that wrapped around the entire store. And the parking lot was full of pickup trucks. :)
Jed, it's next to Safeway, across Perring Pkwy from me. :D

:dunno I have had no problems with mine yet? I have used it on all of my cars, and even on a friends Pathfinder. I have heard some horror stories about them breaking, I just make sure I have jackstands under it at all times.
I'll make sure Greg is underneath benching my car just in case.

Where did yours break?
I called up the HF folks and they said they had a batch of jacks that had saddles and <the piece you put the handle into> made as CAST aluminum, whereas they are supposed to be FORGED. They told me that their current batch of jacks have these pieces forged.
Another failure mode appears to be the ears on the saddle. They are not meant to support the weight of the car, but people are jacking up the car on them, causing problems.
John
GreekM3 04-13-2004, 04:28 PM doh...........how much does the sears one run for? My stupid Team MechaniX one just broke after a couple of years :(
robmarch 04-13-2004, 04:28 PM nice photochop of your car, SoloII///M. I love it when ricers make it look like their cars lift wheels like proper racing cars.

vjlax18 04-13-2004, 06:11 PM FYI, the retail store is not the same as the website. They carry most of what the online store does, and will match online prices if you bring in a printout of the item. :D

1996 328ti 04-14-2004, 12:07 AM I have a similar one that I bought from Costco a couple years ago. It works fine. Some people have complained about the prongs near the lifting pad breaking. Mine twists unless it is absolutely perpendicular to the chassis. If mine lasts 3 years I will feel I got my money out of it. It works better than my old Sears jack did. It lifts the car higher than the Sears.
I threw out those impact wrenches that connect to the battery. I bought 3 of them at once. I was planning on leaving them in the car and giving one away. All 3 did not work. It was too late for me to return them.
Just realize, you get what you pay for. it is not a $600 aluminum jack that costs $90. My Costco may have been more than $200. If you get a year out of it I'd say you saved yourself a hernia from lifting a heavier jack.
Best impact wrench is the 18V Dewalt.

If my crappy $60 cordless impact wrench (24V) lasts me two seasons I'll be happy. I'm not spending $400 on a snap on or $300 on a DeWalt to change my tires every weekend. It's just not worth it. If I had a garage to actually do work on my car, well, I'd probably just get an air compressor and an air impact.
I've used Eric's Snap on and it is WAY nicer than the POS I have, but for what I use it for it is just overkill.
I've heard the horror stories of the aluminum RACING jack, but I'm willing to take a chance on it.

I respectfully disagree. The SnapOn 14.4 and 18V are hands down, the BEST.
My jacks all broke valves or similar as they would not hold pressure. I bled them as instructed to no avail. The first one I got HF to replace for me because a friend had just bought his so I claimed it was new and we just bought it.... second time around, no such luck.
themadhatter 04-14-2004, 09:34 AM damn, I might have to move into John's den if he's only 0.5 mile away.

been using this set for the past 3 years with no complaints. :)

And I just bought another welding helmet last night. It's an Autodimming one that they had their G O sale price of $50. :D
And other random stuff too.
There's something else you need at the Garage...
You need Heidi from Home Improvement!
Too bad you can't get her at Harbor Freight!

OK. I retrac t my statement. My 12v Snap-On sucked. I could never break free the bolts even with a full charged battery. When I bought a 14v battery it made all the difference. I like Bill's Dewalt. Now this reminds me, I need a spare 14.4 battery.
