View Full Version : Hate having to run a front plate? robmarch 04-13-2004, 09:21 AM click here ( http://www.petitiononline.com/mdplate/petition.html) G.T. 04-13-2004, 09:25 AM I heard about that, Rob. Think something'll actually come from it? magnetic1 04-13-2004, 09:25 AM i doubt this would work.... it has been tried before and there was even a bill drafted up, but then law enforcement killed it. Though now that MD seems to need $... maybe it would seem more appealing? You should see if you can find out how much more it costs to produce an extra front plate, then research how many registered vehicles there are and produce a number. That might open Erlich's eyes... so instead of raising taxes or having this damn slot machine debate... eliminate front tags! :buttrock John V 04-13-2004, 09:28 AM i doubt this would work.... it has been tried before and there was even a bill drafted up, but then law enforcement killed it. That might open Erlich's eyes... so instead of raising taxes or having this damn slot machine debate... eliminate front tags! :buttrock Honestly, I mean how much does it cost to stamp out two plates instead of one? And think about it, they get $50 every time they stop you and you don't have one. Plus that's what they aim their lasers at for speed traps. It would cause a big decrease in revenue generation if they didn't have them. Not to mention red light cameras that take a picture of the front of your car... photo radar on MD-295 near DC... I still signed it, but there's no way it's gonna get passed. robmarch 04-13-2004, 09:45 AM they'd make a bunch of money just from not forcing trailers to run front plates... ;) jterp 04-13-2004, 10:04 AM That's why I keep my cars registered in PA... Mikey52 04-13-2004, 10:13 AM What front plate... :devillook Looks like their site is down, I cant get to that link. magnetic1 04-13-2004, 11:41 AM actually.. it does cost a lot per plate. The stamping process is cheap, but the materials involved is not. Each metal plate needs to be coated with reflective material and during research, I've come across a cost of 55 cents PER plate. In 2001 MD had 2,582,000 registered vehicles, 55,000 Motorcycles, 7,000 buses, 1,308,000 trucks. ( http://www.bts.gov/publications/transportation_profiles/summary/html/table_05_01.html ) That's a total of 3,952,000 registered vehicles. @ 55 cents per plate that equates to $2,173,600 Not to mention new registrations in the future. Furthermore, there is a reflective bead process that states like Connecticuit use that costs only 10 cents per plate... if MD further used that process for the rear plates, that would save 45 cents per rear plate and give a cost savings of $1,778,400. I never got a speeding ticket in the BMW... **knocks on wood** jterp 04-13-2004, 01:09 PM Isnt the cost of the plate refelected in the MD registration fee?... and isn't it makred up? I guarantee they're making the plates for $0.55 and 'loaning' them to you at a few thousand precent more. Plus, they get returned when the registration is canceled and the materials are recycled. -- I'd be willing to bet that having a front plate requirement actually makes money for the state. John V 04-13-2004, 01:12 PM theres no where for me to put my front plate, sir and i'll be damned if I have to drill a hole in my BMW. *walks to front of car and scratches head* hmmm, well I guess just keep it displayed in the windshield Thank you sir, have a nice day... and thank you BavAuto for the front plate delete :devillook Good luck with that. They nailed ken what, two, three times? He took the "someone stole my front license plate bracket" excuse. Didn't work. You will eventually get nailed for it, especially if you drive on freeways. It's a primary offense here. John GreekM3 04-13-2004, 01:14 PM Those online petitions have no merit.......so many people have tried with those things but I've never seen them work. John hmmmm, well He let me off... i drive all over the place and thats the only time anybody(cop) has ever said anything to me I keep it on the dash so it is visible just not on the front of the whip John V 04-13-2004, 01:41 PM hmmmm, well He let me off... i drive all over the place and thats the only time anybody(cop) has ever said anything to me I keep it on the dash so it is visible just not on the front of the whip You got lucky. We work near BWI and two guys I know with BMWs have gotten pulled over for it. It's also a good way to get more attention from a cop. If you're speeding and they normally would just ignore you, now they have an additional $50 reason to pull you over. I agree with your reasoning - the car looks like crap with the front plate - but I'm not willing to get pulled over twice a year even if I get let off for it and it's definitely not worth $50 to me to not run it. But I'm POOR. magnetic1 04-13-2004, 01:46 PM luckily our M3 is registered in VA and we drive it mainly in MD.... :) MD cops cant write you a ticket for it. One thing to note though.. when parking in DC and Arlington/Alexandria, they CAN and WILL write you a ticket for no front tag while youre parked!!!!!! Regardless of what state your car is registered in! Teuton 04-13-2004, 01:49 PM You got lucky. We work near BWI and two guys I know with BMWs have gotten pulled over for it. Pete magnetic1 04-13-2004, 01:53 PM here's the thing.. if they charged the same amount for registration and eliminating the front plate.. then they would be getting more revenue.... simple. kenkamm 04-13-2004, 02:10 PM i have been in MD for two years now no one has gave me any problem for not have a front plate.. Well I got pulled over for it three times in a month, got off twice, got nailed the third time. All three times I got pulled over, I was just driving in traffic, not speeding or driving agressively. Previously I had driven around for over six months with no problem. I think they are cracking down. I just put the sucker on. I can deal with $50 a couple times a year, but not a couple times a month. It's just not worth it. jws626 04-13-2004, 02:30 PM luckily our M3 is registered in VA and we drive it mainly in MD.... :) MD cops cant write you a ticket for it. You sure about that? I'm registered in DC and have gotten pulled over in MD for it. No ticket, but according to the cop, he could have given me one. I remember looking up the MD law, and it looked as if he wasn't just BSing me. NYQUEENZ 04-13-2004, 09:36 PM IF your car has PA plates u only get one plate BSR423 04-13-2004, 11:27 PM I'm actually going to go into the Baltimore chat on Yahoo! & maybe even AOL to post the link to this petition. Don't know how much this will effect anything , but lets try to get as many people to sign this thing as possible ! ! In the comment section I said 'I think it should be up to the owner or the vehicle weather they want the front plate or not.' I see corvette's on the road ALL the time without front plates. Wonder how often they get the $50 shaft. I got pulled over in my old car for this offense , but only got a work order. If I have to put the front plate on my M3 I am going to do the same thing I did before.Click here (http://www.dragonswordmotorsports.com/Nissan/240sx/Gallery/Event7/pic2.html). I got pulled over with it like that , but the cop couldn't do anything about it. He even called for another cop to show up to say if it was legal or not. Cop #2 said since it's displayed he couldn't do anything & I drove away happy. 1996 328ti 04-14-2004, 12:12 AM I've gotten 3 tickets for no front plate in 2 years. Plus one for a photo film covering. I couldn't afford any more tickets. The petition is old news. It will never pass. There are lame excuses for them to be required. The lamest is in the event of an accident often a license plate is left behind. MD can save so much money by being a one plate state. Keep the registration cost the same and produce one plate. Cost of manufacturing the plates goes to half. Storing plates needs half the space. It's just more revenue for the state. Don't want to run a front plate. Become a cop! Hell, you don't want to follow any laws, become a cop. You can get a ticket for that too. You were lucky that you got a dumb cop. Mikey52 04-14-2004, 07:46 AM I just read this morning in the Express that Erlich just signed a law increasing the cost to register your car. It went from $81 every 2 years to $128 every 2 years. It's expected to bring in $153 million to be used for the state highways and bridges. They also increased "misc. fees" that the MVA can charge you, supposedly to up the total revenue to $238 million. I dont think they care about a measly $1.5 mill anymore... GoBLue 04-14-2004, 08:28 AM luckily our M3 is registered in VA and we drive it mainly in MD.... :) MD cops cant write you a ticket for it. Regardless of what state your car is registered in! I live in Arlington and work in Old Town Alexandria, when I moved here from Michigan 2 years ago, I had a Michigan plate on for about 8 months before selling the car. I parked on the street in Old Town everyday...but I never got a ticket for not having a front plate when in Michigan you only need one. Teuton 04-14-2004, 09:27 AM It's funny now that I think about it. When I had my jeep and just bought my twin tube front bumper, I didn't have a front tag for about six months. One of my buddies told me it was illegal, so I zip tied it to the bumper. Never got hassled for it. Pete AlfaEric 04-14-2004, 09:33 AM It's funny now that I think about it. Pete One of my friends got pulled over (and ticketed) in MD because her front license plate bracket was broken so her plate wasn't properly mounted. ---Eric jterp 04-14-2004, 10:14 AM IF your car has PA plates u only get one plate That's why i havent switched my registration over to MD from PA -- MWhip 04-14-2004, 05:18 PM I'm about to put my front plate on the car...dont' want to give another reason for to stop me and tell me my tint is not legal either :(....but that BMW delete panel in the front just looks soo good. 1996 328ti 04-14-2004, 07:54 PM I'm about to put my front plate on the car...dont' want to give another reason for to stop me and tell me my tint is not legal either :(....but that BMW delete panel in the front just looks soo good. In Maryland, tint is illegal unless you have a sticker on each window from DMV. Maybe it's changed to be only the front side windows. GreekM3 04-14-2004, 08:04 PM where is that from? Tint law is 35%, you dont need a sticker. 1996 328ti 04-14-2004, 08:28 PM You need a sticker to prove that it is 35%. A cop doesn't have a light meter to verify the density of the tint. When I registered my car in MD in order to pass inspection I needed to display the stickers before I got the inspection certificate. Otherwise I would have had to remove the tint. I doubt if a cop will know the law. Seems like cops only know how to read radar and nothing else. The next time you are at a full service DMV, speak the the State trooper there. I don't know what the laws are in DC and VA. PA is NO tint, period. GreekM3 04-14-2004, 09:25 PM I don't think you nessasarily need the sticker. Maybe they hand them out to prove that your tint is legal, however that wouldnt stop people from getting legal tint done, getting the sticker, and then re-tinting it darker. Where is the sticker to be displayed? I was just at the DMV in glen burnie with my buddy. His tint in the one window was replaced (someone broke into the car) and it was legal while the rest were illegal. The state trooper used a laser device to find the % tint of the car. 1996 328ti 04-14-2004, 11:18 PM Not all cops are going to have the equipment to test the tint. If they make it an issue they will send you to DMV. Nothing is going to stop someone from doing something illegal. EOM. MWhip 04-14-2004, 11:45 PM i heard it was a law like that a long time ago about a decal saying the percentage of tint but these days the cops don't care too much about it no more. ANd yes 35% is the legal limit in MD but if you look around so many cars have 20% or limo tint running around. 1996 328ti 04-14-2004, 11:49 PM i heard it was a law like that a long time ago about a decal saying the percentage of tint but these days the cops don't care too much about it no more. ANd yes 35% is the legal limit in MD but if you look around so many cars have 20% or limo tint running around. And there are cars running around with no brake lights, bald tires and couldn't pass an inspection if the registration was wrapped with a $100 bill. Not to mention that people don't know what that stalk coming out of the steering wheel is used for. The block the left lane, mindless idiots on cellphones. But I am pulled over for no front plate! Now you got me started. :eyecrazy: robmarch 04-15-2004, 09:08 AM Where do you get these decals? I'm planning on tinting my car legally, and want to follow the letter of the law. Like always. 1996 328ti 04-15-2004, 01:59 PM Where do you get these decals? I'm planning on tinting my car legally, and want to follow the letter of the law. Like always. If you really want to be legal you need to go to a full serve DMV. I wouldn't worry about it. And a side note. I'm first at a light on Sam Eig (sp) I'm in our Mini with my wife. Light turns green, I go. Once on 370 an unmarked car turns on his lights. Long story short, you know why I stopped you? Yes. I took off a little quick. A little quick? I paced you at 80. Speed limit is 55 there. He is an accident investigator of some sort. Gives me a little lecture. Tells me his sister has a Mini and gives me my license back. My wife and I stare at each other. WTF just happened? He just told me to slow down. I know if I was in the Bimmer I would have gotten a ticket. The cop told me it would have been $275 and a 5 pointer. I thanked him and we both went on our ways. |
