:help
I just need some direction to get started then I swear I'll hit the search function ;) Basically I don't want to take out another loan so I'm looking to spend no more than $7k
Are there any problem years/models? Anything in particular I should look hard for? How does this one look???

BUY A 535I 5-SPEED. Pay the extra cash if you can find one..they are a blast to drive and the M30 motor is basically indestructible. I have 175,000 miles and I kick the sh$t out of my car every day....it just begs for more.
Thanks for the advice! Keep it coming!

no real issues with 1991-1995 525i except possibly water pump (if it's still the original). 1989-1990 had a different motor that is not as strong.

I can attest to that. Good choices are the 535i or 525i with the S50? engine.

Yes, there are problems with auto. The tranny just doesn't last as long as the engine in most of the auto E34s. Plus, especially in the 525, that's a lot of your rather limited torque getting sucked up by the slushbox.
If it were me, and it was, :D I would settle for nothing less than the best all-round.... the 535i 5-speed.
Nothing against you M50-equipped 525i 5-speeds, though. I envy your gas mileage!

I just bought a 95 E34 the other day and i dont see any problems yet with the tranny. I am thinking about getting the dinan engine and tranny chip. i read that that requiers 92 octane fule...is this true all of the time or can i run on regular if i wish?

with any performance chip, you need to run premium fuel, 91 or higher.
you may want to look into the jim conforti (turner) and e.a.t. chips. although, e.a.t. probably does not have something ready for the 95 e34 models yet.

e.a.t.: www.dsylva-tech.ca
for the tranny, dinan is your only choice.

I'm looking into a E34 as well.
Is the 1995 E34's the only ones with body colored side skirts?
