View Full Version : oil/inspection cluster non-functional
Noobie 04-12-2004, 01:05 PM :help I have a '98 740i and when I start the car, the oil/inspection cluster lights up, but never displays "oil" or "inspection" or the progress bars. Can anyone tell me if this is a DIY fix, and how I might go about fixing it?
red740is 04-12-2004, 04:24 PM Do you have the green/yellow/red bars and are just missing the text?
Noobie 04-13-2004, 04:00 PM OK, I've never posted pics before, so I don't know if this is gonna work. I'll attach the pictures to this message:
Here is a picture of what the oil/inspection display looks like with the key on, engine not running (OIKeyOn.jpg):
and with the engine running: (OIRunning.jpg):
M.Wong 04-14-2004, 09:02 AM That is normal, I understand.
When you turn the key on and/or start the car, the lights will show up. Once the car is running, they turn off. Unless you are nearly due or due for service, then they stay on and the Oil Service or Inspection text will be lit up.
:)
Noobie 04-14-2004, 10:45 AM I understand that it's normal for the cluster to light when starting the car, then go blank after a few seconds, but if you look at the picture with the display lit up (OIKeyOn.jpg) you will se that I get no progress bars, no "oil" or "Inspection" lit up, and I'm wondering what's going on.... :(
Trnsprtr 04-14-2004, 05:19 PM I understand that it's normal for the cluster to light when starting the car, then go blank after a few seconds, but if you look at the picture with the display lit up (OIKeyOn.jpg) you will se that I get no progress bars, no "oil" or "Inspection" lit up, and I'm wondering what's going on.... :(
Read M. Wong's post again - you didn't understand it.
There is nothing wrong with your car.
Noobie 04-15-2004, 10:32 AM OK, bear with me guys... I understand that the display is only supposed to light up for a few seconds when I start the car, and then blank out.
Let's focus only on the OIKeyOn.jpg. If you look at the picture, there's no progress bars. Are you saying that is normal? I thought there should be some green bars, yellow bars, and red bars, and they should all show up right after service reset, then slowly disappear (over the next 300miles or so) until only one red bar is left, then the "oil" or "inspection" text lights up.
To put it another way, if you look at the picture OIKeyOn.jpg, can YOU tell me where I stand in the oil/inspection cycles? The display has looked like that since I got the car (approx. 3000 miles ago).
Am I making sense?
DavidF 04-15-2004, 11:29 AM Yes, normal. The green bars are NOT lit up because you are due an oil change. If you ignore the bars and do not reset them, then the yellow bars will slowly disappear and "oil"/"inspection" will be displayed. when you reset the service indicator, you will get the green bars back. Just reset the service indicator.
Reed Hunt 04-15-2004, 12:13 PM Agree, this is what mine does/looks like, too.
Qsilver7 04-15-2004, 05:57 PM I understand that it's normal for the cluster to light when starting the car, then go blank after a few seconds, but if you look at the picture with the display lit up (OIKeyOn.jpg) you will see that I get no progress bars, no "oil" or "Inspection" lit up, and I'm wondering what's going on.... :(
What do you mean you don't get any progress bars...I see 3 (of 5) green bars lit up. (see pic below) You should go back to your owners manual (page 74 and 149 I believe) and re-read about the service idicator and interval. A brief synopsis...5 green lights diminish down to the "amber" light (at which time the service that is required will light up either "OIL" or INSPECTION"). If you fail to have the service done...then the last light (red) will illuminate and stay on with the "amber" and "OIL/INPECTION" light.
There is nothing wrong with your display. Counting from the left... 2 green lights have already gone off and you have 3 green lights left before the amber light comes on.

BTW, you can get anywhere from 7.5k-15k between Inspections

A small victory, but a victory nontheless.
It appears that my car is FINE. :shifty For now.
Thanks for the help guys. If you can't stand the noobs, stay outta the forum, I guess... right? :nono Remember you were all in my place at one time. Not literally. Figuratively. Capische?
M.Wong 04-15-2004, 07:11 PM Don't mind us/them. This board is very noobie friendly, compared to some of the others out there. Frustration sets in when it appears (whether right or wrong) that someone didn't fully read a message that someone else took the time to post.
You can always PM me privately if a reply of mine doesn't make sense. Information, to be usefull, must be shared.
:)
