well i used gunk engine de-greaser today cause i figured what the hell, well after i hosed it off i noticed my plastic shiny parts were no longer shiney, the gunk stripped off the shiny plastic coating leaving a dull black underneath!!

not a big deal i can paint em up good but just a heads up

Use either Pledge or WD-40 after degreasing with Gunk, it will get the engine back to new. I tried it myself with Pledge and was amazed by the look.

There is a post on this site on exactly how to do it.

yeah i read it, thats why i did it, but it actually took a layor or plastic off my engine, the shiny plastic parts that is, i could actually rub my engine and flakes of plastic would come off on my finger

The degreaser probably just took the layer of shiner that was on there off. I doubt it actually ate away at the plastic enough to let it rub off. Do you use tire shine? Try rubbing your tires after you put that on, see if its the same stuff that you rubbed off the plastic stuff in the engine bay.

no no i typed it up wrong,
what im trying to say is it took that shiney finnish off the platic peices, sort of the "clear coat" if you will and left a dull underside i got a pic right here
notice how some spots are shiney and some are dull, thats where it didnt take the finnish off

meh im not too worried about it, i can always pull the covers off and paint them, i would have been pissed if it ate away at it and left holes and shit in the platic

I've used Gunk for the better part of 10 years and I never saw a result like this....it woulp piss me off, that's for sure!

You know what, I would contact Gunk if I were you to see what happened. They just might have a solution or a compensation for you. Always interesting when you mention to them you are on forums such as Bimmerforums and that members using their product are awaiting their solution to the problem.

Good luck.

WOW... Man that sucks. I would be pissed.. This is one reason i stick with things like simple green and orange blast and even then i dilute them and never let them sit more then 3 min. If decide on painting everything please let us know. I'd like to see how that turns out.

I'm still paper towels and toothbrushes.

I'd never foam my engine compartment.
