View Full Version : Got my 2001 740iL Sport (lotsa pics!)
Catul 04-09-2004, 06:15 PM Hey all; I'm a newbie here, been following the board for a few weeks since starting my search for this car. Found it at the local dealer the day they got it in (was there driving a couple of other cars) - they hadn't got the title, or sent it through the CPO process yet, was unadvertised, and I guess I just got lucky!
It's a 2001 740iL Sport, Jet Black with black leather, 42000 miles, widescreen NAV (had them upgrade to software V22), cold weather and convenience package, and in great shape. Has Michelin Pilot Sport A/S with plenty of tread left. They put four new rotors and pads as part of the CPO process.
I'm having a blast with this car, it's so much fun. Here are several pictures I took today, let me know what you think!

FlyingHigh 04-09-2004, 06:20 PM Black on Black - nice! But the best part? Those chrome Mpars!! (OK, I'm a bit biased there)...
Congratulations and welcome to the jungle. We can help you get into trouble in the mod fever department. :D
Catul 04-09-2004, 07:27 PM Jack, you got it right - those chrome M-Par's sure add immensely to the look of the car (especially on a black one)!
I gotta stay away from mods, I know only too well about the fever - had a 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 that was running way high boost, amongst other things :-) I've had my 1991 Acura NSX for eight years now, and it's all stock, so I think I can resist the temptation to mess with the 740iL's performance.
I do plan to stealth-install a V1, though, and add an XM tuner to the mix so that it can be controlled through the steering wheel (none of this FM-modulation crap), and then that's about it for now.
FlyingHigh 04-09-2004, 07:47 PM Sounds good - the reality on the 01 Sports is that there are a lot fewer mods than an earlier car (like mine). You already have 1/2 of the stuff I have added/changed on my car, so you are way ahead of the "mod game". Have fun!
John Spatola 04-09-2004, 10:29 PM Congratulations on the beautiful new BMW. From the first test drive, they all turn into great addiction! Best, John.
Wiseguy ON 04-09-2004, 10:56 PM The consensus is against them, but I love those chrome M-Pars... I think the car is gorgeous. Congrats!
stever 04-09-2004, 11:02 PM Your car looks HOT! Way to go. Jet black is very classy and the black interior is the "tits" :corkysm60 I'm not a chrome wheel guy (except on my wife's car!) but they look awesome on your black beauty.
Please do tell us more about the XM radio hookup after you complete the install. Would love to see finished pics when it's in. Where exactly will you put the receiver? In the ashtray?

Thanks! I'm not usually a fan of chrome wheels either, but these really work well for this car (and they're not ultra-shiny either).

I started a thread here (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=197085) about installing XM in the E38; let's continue this part of the discussion there.
Trnsprtr 04-10-2004, 09:12 AM Hmmmm, I guess black on black looks OK.
Sheeeeit, looks great. Those chromies do look very nice. I may just be starting a saga of SteveR proportions with my wheels but now I may have to scratch the idea of the E65 wheels and chrome my M-Pars. :)
rango44 04-10-2004, 11:27 AM If you are a BMWCCA member, don't forget the rewards program as this would get you a check for $1500 if the car is a certified used BMW.

Shoot, I didn't know about this!! I used to be a BMWCCA member several years ago, but didn't renew last time. I guess I can't join after the fact and try and get this check, huh? Looks like you need to have been a member for a year before the purchase.
I really wasn't aniticipating selling my 1998 M3/4, should've kept that membership current anyway ... $1500 is a good chunk of change :)
MDabney 04-10-2004, 01:33 PM Very nice... and welcome to our little playpen.
One request though, would you please help us out a little with that oversized sig. We have a 240 pixels max height restriction so a reduction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oops, sorry about that, I didn't realize the restriction; it's fixed now! :)
MDabney 04-10-2004, 01:54 PM Thanks, much appreciated.

Sorry about that buddy, but you are required to have at least a year constant membership prior to purchase.
TitaniumSeeker 04-10-2004, 10:54 PM :alright Welcome to the land of OZ......
YoWsup 04-11-2004, 12:25 AM WOW that is HOT!! I've always loved the 2001 sport! imo, much better than the new 7 design.
very wise choice man!
Mayimbe740i 04-11-2004, 01:07 AM aw man... nice, very nice! thats one gorgeous 7... reading the story it sounds like this car was your destiny, heh.

red740is 04-11-2004, 04:34 AM Nice!!!!!
Where in CT are you?
Catul 04-11-2004, 01:03 PM Thanks for the comments, everyone! I'm really enjoying this car, we've had a few days of sunshine and it's been wonderful driving around in the 740iL.
<p>
Where in CT are you?
I'm in Avon (about 15 minutes west of Hartford). Looks like you're in the Fairfield area, just over an hour from me?
SR740il 04-13-2004, 01:38 AM Nice car. Did you get it from New Country?
I'm in Farmington...so I will keep a look out for that Black beauty.
Welcome to the sickness!
Catul 04-13-2004, 09:41 AM Yup, bought it at New Country. I had a bad experience with sales and service their over 8 years ago, and this was my first time back - apparently, they totally changed ownership about 4 years ago and have new people all around, will have to see if their service is any better (a friend who takes his '01 740i there says they're good). My sales experience this time around was fine.
With my E36 M3 that I traded in, I'd go to a local independent in Canton who specializes in German cars. Any warranty work was taken to Watertown BMW. For regular oil service with my E38, I plan to contine going to Automobile Associates in Canton - they're great.
99bmw740il 04-13-2004, 01:10 PM one recomendation- ditch the fornt plate holder :) With replacement strip

Yeah, I noticed that too - what's the replacement strip, where can I get it? Thanks!
SR740il 04-14-2004, 01:22 AM Ethan in service at New Country has been outstanding.
Did you ever have brakes or suspension work done at Canton? I've heard good things about them as well but have not ventured over since my car was CPO until last year.
By the way...I also noticed you have an NSX. A buddy of mine over here in Farmington has a red one...I think it is a 92 or 93. That is a nice combo for you to have. (740 with the NSX)

Catul 04-14-2004, 09:50 AM S.R., good to know that service at New Country is good - is Ethan the service adviser or a tech?
I just had regular maintenance done on my E36 M3 at Automotive Associates in Canton, no modifications really (besides the UUC Swaybarbarians, that is, which I subsequently removed). They work on some really nice cars there, many track-only really tricked out 911's.
The NSX is great; I had it stored all winter and just took it out last weekend for the first time in months, it felt so good to drive it again, reminded me why I've kept it all these years. The 740 and NSX are very different, of course, but both wonderful in their own way - you're right, it is a great combination. Though, the NSX with my E36 M3/4 was nice too :)
How long has your friend had his NSX? I used to be really active with the NSXCA until the last few years, was the Northeast Region representative when the club first started out.
vegasjeff 04-15-2004, 05:54 PM Love my 2001 750il:

SR740il 04-20-2004, 12:08 AM Bit of a delay in my reply...I was out of town.
Ethan is a service advisor, however, he is the only guy that does performance stuff. He is the Dinan rep. Make sure you ask for him next time.
My friend has had his NSX for about 2 years now. I do know he has had it in the shop a bit :( He still loves the car and i'm sure will work out all of the bugs.
See ya around town. Take a look for a white IL with M-Pars. It is the only one I have ever seen around here. Your chrome M-Pars on black will be hard to miss.
