View Full Version : got spanked by an eclipse
bmwnvw 01-05-2002, 12:48 PM i was coming home yesterday on 80 around state college when i saw a black eclipse. from the back it just looked stock with an exhaust, plus it was dark. so i slowed next too him then stepped on it. he pulls behind me until we get passed some traffic. i pull over into the right lane and when i look over i see some guages on his a-pillar and think to myself, "maybe its turbo, but its probably just some ricer who thinks his guages look cool." i was wrong. we both slowed down to about 80 side by side and then i went for it. i got about a 2 car length on him and thought maybe he didn't want to go now but i kept my foot on it. i looked in my mirror around 100 and i see him pulling me in. at around 110 he blows by me. it was a turbo. i lost.
jesd325is 01-05-2002, 03:38 PM i had the same thing happen to me a week ago. the guy didnt look stock though, had full body kit and all, but i figured he was just posing. i also got the better launch from around 80 but the guy just flew by me and left me at a stand still. i need to get a sc or turbo just to keep up wiht these fools. it seems like all the ricers here have either a turbo, supercharger, or nos.

go to them ricer sites an price it, its like half price for them compared to us. Come east about 8 hours an chill with us in dtown. We got sum fast bimmers here an sum fast rice but it still gets cooked in under a minute.

i know what you mean, i just need to get out of el paso. its pretty much just juarez, mexico. i just got out of the army and didnt want to leave my twin brother lost out here since hes still in the army. i also got a decent federal job, so once a job pops up somewhere else i am out of here. im originaly from cali in the l.a. county san fernando valley area. i think dtown is like a 10hr drive though. theres a bmw club down here but it seems like most of the bimmers are hiding in garages. i think thats why i get tested a lot cause there realy is no one else to test, since im always up for some action. i see a lot of these cars at the car shows so i know what they got under the hood, and its a lot cheaper like you stated above to own and customize the other cars. but i do get plenty of kills to make me happy.
Stylin 01-06-2002, 06:28 PM A white eclipse with a silver racing stripe took me out easily as soon as the road opened up. I got in front of him at first, he was probably at low rpms and we both tore into this corner side by side at 80 on the highway and I got in front of him because of traffic. We both exit for the same highway and he was patiently behind me. As soon as we get off the ramp.. Im in 3rd gear and nail it hard.. he swings next to me and just blows past me.. when I was at 120mph.. he was like 6 cars in front of me.. I gave up. Frickin fast as hell!! This same guy took out ACSDavid from DTM also.
Makes me want to buy an Eclipse.. shit.. they're cheap cars and mods are dirt cheap too.
Ben 93 325is 01-06-2002, 10:07 PM Yeah? Wanna buy my wife's bone stock, never modified 97 Talon Turbo AWD 5-speed?!

I wish.. i just purchased the Saturn SC2 as my daily driver. But nice car! You should mod the hell outa it and make it a 1/4 tracker!! :devillook
Ben 93 325is 01-07-2002, 10:18 AM Believe me...I would LOVE to! My wife won't let me touch it! She insists on driving it stock! Some people...
It's funny, after watching the Fast and the Furious this summer, I was thinking about finding a cheap azz used Civic EX and modding it just for kicks. Basically as DIY project for myself-so that if it blew up-no biggie. It kinda would be fun to build my own ricer just for the hell of it. But with finance rates being low and I wanted an SUV for the snow and the sand, I went with my Explorer and modded it.
Still would be fun to buy a used Honda and rice it out. If we all had $10K and a Civic, what would you guys do? (other than sell the Honda, take the money and modify your bimmer)
I would get a
GS-R engine
Jackson Racing Supercharger
NOS
HKS Super Drager exhaust
Weapon R intake
Coilver suspension
and then come back to this board and talk $hit how I beat an M5!! LOL!
oh yeah...
and LOTS of stickers. Maybe some GreDDy, HKS, and Mugen stickers. And of course, the almighty, M-killing "Type R" badge...

I was thinking the exact same thing. I had been looking on and off for the last couple of years. The thing is, I can't afford a decent one and my M3. Maybe in due time. I'm just worried about some quality and reliability issues with the DSMs and that crankwalk problem that some of them are having.

Yeah thats the other problem.. i need reliability for my daily driver. Ive had friends with DSM cars that mostly fell apart.
Rel44 M3 01-07-2002, 05:07 PM Lately I've been thinking of buying like a GS (non-turbo) DSM and getting a stage 2 turbo kit for it from Hahn Racecraft here in Chicago. You know what the going price is on that? A hair under $3k. That's sick! That gets you to 13.7 in the quarter mile.
Ox///M 01-07-2002, 05:42 PM But what bimmers are you guys talking about? Was this an e36 M3 vs the eclipse? Or something else?
Ox///M 01-07-2002, 05:43 PM I should note: I have sigs turned off.. sorry if I missed the car in the sig if it was there.... I just can't stand all the huge bandwidth robbing sigs. Also, it's bad for viewing while at work.

$3k? You're just talking about the turbo kit, right?
"NOS. I need NOS."
"Brian-I've seen you drive, you have a heavy foot. Amateurs don't use NOS"
Ja Rule: "He's got enough NOS to blow himself up"
Sorry, bought Fast and the Furious on DVD last week...
Rel44 M3 01-07-2002, 06:04 PM Yeah, $3k for the turbo kit. With a GS or even a RS, this extra $3k will put you 1 to 1.5s faster than a stock GSX in the quarter mile. Something just excites me about bang for your buck performance mods, something utterly lacking in the BMW department. :( Oh well.
I got Fast and the Furious on DVD too. Haven't had time to watch it, and I never saw it in the theater. Is it good?
I liked it a lot-a great movie about the young racing culture. Cool scenes and races. Mostly Japanese cars (w/exception of a modded 3rd gen Jetta, a Ferrari and a 60's Hemi Charger) in the movie. My friends hated it, but I am a gearhead and love that stuff. There is a cool race between that Ferrari I mentioned and a modded Supra TT on the PCH near Malibu. Check it out!
StormShadow 01-15-2002, 11:12 PM Watch very very hard in the F and F movie, and you will see two BMW's, cant tell if their modified M's or 328's, but they are definitely their, check it out...if you can't find it I'll tell you where they are..:devillook
Rel44 M3 01-16-2002, 10:51 AM I finally watched it, and I did notice one 3-series in there. I can't remember which scene though... maybe it was in the first street racing event when everybody was lining the streets. Where's the other one?
StormShadow 01-16-2002, 12:57 PM Its really quick, and it might even be the same one, but its at the Race Wars party, once as the camera sweeps down in that section, it comes across a BMW with a wing on the back and a crazy paint job, maybe I am wrong, but I'm pretty sure its there :evil2
Rel44 M3 01-16-2002, 01:07 PM In the "Making Of..." featurette on the DVD they mentioned that a lot of the extras they used for Race Wars brought their own car. I wonder if anyone on this forum was an extra and had their bimmer there?
StormShadow 01-16-2002, 04:34 PM I know they did that, and I had a friend who took his type R out there, but he said he didn't see any Bimmer's oout there, but then again there are lots of cars on that set, and I know I did see one in the Race Wars scene, so if its anyone here, best to fess up and get the props, cause the car was pretty hot...:evil2

the only TOTAL BS in the movie is the race with the ferrari... that supra would have slaughtered the italian, that is if the kid knew how to drive it.
frayed 01-16-2002, 06:54 PM bmwnvw,
Same thing happened to me, from a roll at 50 mph. I got my ass handed to me.
~265 hp just can't compete with the wild turbo'd cars in the japanese import scene.
Still wouldn't trade my robust, incredibly balanced, conservative M3/4 for zooted out eclipse turbo with a heinous paint scheme, though.

Now hang on, I thought the Supra did take the Ferrari, but that seems to only be because he hit those cars and decided to swerve into oncoming traffic...I dont know about the Supra handing it to the Italian though, cause unless it becomes non street legal, or modded more then it was in the movie, it would have been a good race... :evil2

nope. if it was a 10 second supra, which it was in the movie, it wouldve cahh-rushed the spyder. CAH-rushed :D
I guess that the directors wanted to milk that scene, because the Supra had NOS (he squeezed against the Hemi at the end of the movie). I figure it would be boring if it was a one sided 5 second race.
That area of the PCH is awesome-I've taken my g/f's Z28 ragtop thru there a few times. Only one drag race though-went up against a Boxster and kicked his ass. No Ferraris piloted by a$$holes.
StormShadow 01-17-2002, 04:49 PM To Demetrios
But see here's the thing, the Supra was only a ten second car with NOS, remember he had to use it to get the Carger which would run 9's. So....in the race with the Ferrari he didn't use NOS, he used traffic, but I agree if it was a non-NOS ten second, which I have seen :evil2 It would have served the Italian with ease......

Actually I meant that if the guy had squeezed the NOS against the Ferrari, it would've been a very short race. Pretty cool race anyway.
Demetrios Prime 01-18-2002, 03:45 PM ah ok, i get what you mean, yeah without nos it prolly wouldve been a better race. the whole races lasting 45 seconds pissed me off too, it just got old, and theyd have a blowooff everytime the camera changed lol. oh well, i guess it was alright ;) i would still rather watch a documentary on street racing
VOLSBimmer 01-19-2002, 02:13 AM W/ the mods that Supra had, it could run 11s w/out NOS and easily hand that 355's it's ass on a platter. W/ NOS, obviously much worse.
Stock turboed cars like the Supra, Eclipse/Talon, and VR4/Stealth are awesome cars to mod. My brother has a TT STealth that has aftermarket 13G turbos and an HKS boost controller, the thing is an absolute freakin monster, it will blow my car off the road so bad.
A few weeks ago, I saw him race a 2000 Civic SI w/ a Jackson Racing Supercharger and internal engine mods running 250 horsepower. From a stand still to 100mph, my brother put over 10 car lengths on the guy!! And the Civic has run a 9.0 in the 1.8, so it's fast. My brother's Stealth is just amazing!!
ultim3 01-19-2002, 06:02 AM Yeah, I thought about buying a second car...a civic or eclipse or even better yet, a ~90 300zx (they're cheap!) and modding the hell out of it. Then, after visiting a local auto parts store and realizing that you could buy everything you could ever want to mod you 60's-70's muscle car there, I started thinking of buying a chevelle or road runner or something. Easy to work on, rediculously easy to find parts for and cheap as hell to mod. I used to hate muscle cars but for what they do (go in a straight line very fast), they can be quite cool. I mean, you can go out and buy a 600-700hp crate engine for 4-6k! then you add a $1600 supercharge from your local generic auto parts store and you running silly 1/4 miles. Not to mention that they can handle a lot of nos. Get em on the twisties though and watch 'em slide off the road. hmmm...
neenja 01-20-2002, 02:01 PM some of you guys mentioned buying a cheap ass civic and modding it for kicks, that would be awesome....
BUT
We would make it rice for fun...
some people make it rice to drive and actually make an impression, thats what is sad.
We do it for fun
they are serious...
damn, that sux..
I think buying the better car, then saving for mods is more worth it than buying that POS then modding the hell out of it. B/c in the end, its still that same POS
ah well
IMO
peace
