I had a bizarre grinding/growling noise that I could not track down that ended up being the water pump on our last E38. One night my Wife pulled into the garage and told me it was louder and more consitent than ever and when I popped the hood, antifreeze was misted all over and I saw a few roller bearings laying around. Come to find out it finally gave way and spit out the rollers all over the engine compartment and the grinding/growling noise was my indication/warning. It sounded like it was coming from something right in front of/below the driver's foot well even though it was on the front of the engine. Did not occur all the time thus making it difficult to spot. My Indy told me that if I had wiggled the fan blade I would probably have noticed some play in it and the bearings can start to fail before a leak starts.
Don't know if this is the same thing you are experiencing but who knows.
...but the most important point in Milemarkers comments, IMHO, is to find the exact location of the noise. Soon  Open the hood, get it up in the air, but find the source. good luck, let us know
