View Full Version : MOD's to the 3.0 engine
crowderd 04-06-2004, 12:54 PM While I do still have a deposit on the mythical MZ4 (Mainline BMW, PA), I'm not sure it will happen. I have done some research into Dinan tuning and they claim they will have an “S3” package out in a few months that will be comparable to the 33oi S3 package in both price and results…
That’s $7,000 for 15 hp!
Do any of you have a any suggestions on how I can get to 300 – 340 hp in a Z4 3.0? I am really looking for people that have actually done the mods they suggest.
TIA

Any exhaust, go to a local shop and have a custom one made if the aftermarket co's aren't producing one for the Z4 yet.
Cold Air intake- if they don't make one they're easy to fabricate.

That's good for maybe 15 hp on the 3.0 engine. whatabout the other 85hp?
SilverStreak 04-06-2004, 02:03 PM For 300-340 hp, you'd be looking at a super-charger. Anywhere from $5-9K depending on who's kit you go with, and the state of tune, etc....
Poke around the Forced Induction Forum, ask around there, we have some knowledgeable folks in there...

TexasLonghorn 04-11-2004, 11:08 AM TeamZ4, do you have any experience in this ASA mod to the 3.0 engine? I'm assuming it blows the warranty out of the water.

no, not directly. Rennsport is a recognized quality company. Probably been a lot more installed on 330i's than Z4's at this point. You might want to inquire a E46Fanatics.com. Any engine mod stands to affect the drivetrain warranty, can often depend on the dealer and your relationship with them. Here's a pic of a Z4 installation, looks very clean:

EDIT: Also check out the Forced Induction forum on this site, I found this dyno chart for an ASA kit on a 2002 330i installation (rear wheel numbers shown):

Michael@ND 05-06-2004, 08:07 PM Ac Schnitzer will be producing a supercharger for the 3.0 Z4 which will produce 296 flywheel horsepower. You can then do other upgrades to get you into the higher hp numbers, such as exhaust, FI cams (if anyone produces them), etc. You can also add an Aquamist Water Injection system, Rennsport has bought those from me in the past to test/ run on the ASA kits that they sell.
GreekDriver 05-09-2004, 07:41 PM That's too much money for that power! Swap in an M20 out of an E30 and turbo charge it. 3K for good condition motor + 5k for Turbo Kit and Intercooler = 321rwhp... TCD535i is the guy making those sets talk to him. ;)
If you guys are wondering what I'm doing in the Z4 forum, my mom is looking to buy one... I'm trying to convince her, a Lotus Elise would be a better investment... Especially for me...
Michael@ND 05-10-2004, 09:06 PM Cannot swap an older motor into a new car, that is against Federal law. Supercharger will deliver linear power, so it does not "kit on" like a turbo would. Tuning the newer BMW's seems to be a little tougher than the older ones, from what I gather talking to some people. You know that ASA or ACS have done the homework on the car and they should be good. Just depends on what you want, if you go with ACS then you have a little more exclusivity.

nice suggestion Greek! Why didn't we ever think of this before? I'm going to go swap a 15 year old SOHC engine with 200,000 miles plus into my new car now so I can get 300 to the wheels!!!
man, let your mom get what she wants. Elise-- not a daily driver. But hey, if you Do convince your mom that she doesn't need all the comforts of a BMW... can I drive?
Agamemnon 06-12-2004, 03:13 AM ATP Turbo Kit 400Rwhp 380RWTQ for $4995 with 500+hp options. It's for the e46 330 325 and e36 m3 etc. But since the Z4 uses the same 3.0L and 2.5L engines there's no reason for it not to work.
