View Full Version : Rear deck lid faded - what product to use? old skool 04-04-2004, 12:26 PM I have a black fabric rear deck lid and it is faded to almost a light blue. What product can I use to get it back to black? G. P. Burdell 04-04-2004, 05:13 PM My car's black rear parcel shelf is also a purplish color like yours. A couple of members have used Dupli-Color Vinyl & Fabric Spray to restore their rear decks. You should be able to find it for about $4 at your auto parts store or Wal-Mart. 10kken 04-04-2004, 08:07 PM While my rear deck is not black, it's also faded out. Couple of questions about re-dying. Is it hard to take the rear deck out? Do you have to remove the fabric, or do you just spray this stuff on while the fabric is still attached to the deck? Does it "bleed" afterwards? Has anyone had any experience with puting on some replacement fabric as an alternative? TIA G. P. Burdell 04-05-2004, 07:16 AM Search the forum using the terms "remove rear deck" for instructions on removing it. old skool 04-05-2004, 09:41 AM removing the rear deck is easy but not quick. You have to fold down your rear seats and remove a black plastic piece that holds it down. These little plastic screw type things are a pain to remove. Likely they will need to be replaced with new ones on re-install. You will need to loosen or remove the pillar covers and the side panels and the side bolsters. All that stuff sort of a jig saw puzzle back there and is all connected. Mantic 04-05-2004, 03:37 PM Anyone one know the cost of a new rear deck? old skool 04-05-2004, 03:39 PM way too much. Seriously. G. P. Burdell 04-05-2004, 03:41 PM way too much. Seriously. BMW list price is somewhere around $90 for a new rear deck. 10kken 04-05-2004, 03:44 PM So, with your BMW CCA memeber discount it'd be ~$75. Of courrse you are a member? Mantic 04-05-2004, 03:50 PM So, with your BMW CCA memeber discount it'd be ~$75. Of courrse you are a member? Sure am :redspot Hell i'd just buy a new one. That way i don't have to worry about it again and don't have the smell of "spray paint" in my car. I may buy one as mine is "purple" Guess i'll buy some 303 Fabric protection as well to make sure it doesn't happen again.. old skool 04-05-2004, 03:53 PM hey if that is your wish go for it...but honestly for a half hour of work, a little patience and about $6 you can just touch it up. Then if it looks bad you can always just get another one. G. P. Burdell 04-05-2004, 03:58 PM I have a new rear deck on order and would like to keep it looking good. That 303 Fabric Guard sounds like a great idea... Then if it looks bad you can always just get another one. I know where you're coming from. But in all honesty i'm not all that worried with it. If it starts bothering me more i'll take care of it. 10kken 04-05-2004, 04:04 PM Has anyone ever just recovered the deck with new material? It seems to me that that would be a low cost yet highly effective alternative to either a new deck or the smell of spray paint. Plus, you could do a custom color. It seems to me that that would be a low cost yet highly effective alternative to either a new deck or the smell of spray paint. Plus, you could do a custom color. That's a good question and i do think i remember reading a thread somewhere where someone did just that. I wouldn't opt for a "custom" color 'cause i think black looks the best unless you have a custom interrior to start with. I would be more interested in custom materials then colors. Hmmm now you got me thinking.. Not good :D . 10kken 04-05-2004, 04:13 PM The reason why I bring it up is because I have the dreaded "tan" interior and I'm planning on re-dying my seats. I want to recover the rear deck with some material that more closely ressembles the front dash and top of the door panels - which is more of a green/brown than the more yellow tan color of the seats. Mantic 04-05-2004, 04:48 PM Ahhh i gotcha. |
