View Full Version : ok really upset now, time for new gear ratio
oldM3r 03-29-2004, 10:06 AM OK, ran down to DC for the w/e with wife.
Bombing down I-95, the roads are named for the speed at which you are to travel on them right? Well atleast this time they were, Cruise control set at 95, I hear this amazingly loud sound coming up on me FAST! Holy crap a TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP 1980's trans am comes flying by me follow closely by I think a Buick grand national, kind of looked like a monte carlo but not quite. Anyway, wife goes oh my god is that guy crazy that thing looks like the frame is going to pull away from the tires.
They get caught in traffic for some time I catch up. Windows are rolled down with me behind them.
Slow to 60ish, must have found opening, Drop the m into 3rd, DSC off, sport on at this point....
And they nail it, as do I. Realize this, I am in my baby in the proper gear, thinking this is the king of the highway I am driving right, no way they are going to be anywhere near as fast as I am...
Well they were, I got atleast 2 car legnths pulled on me by BOTH cars to 120ish. Now they got the jump but I was damn impressed that I got killed by 2 cars that had to be almost 20 years old.
Ferris 03-29-2004, 10:27 AM No you got killed by 2 of the best American cars ever, well at least in my opinion. The Grand national and Trans Am (assuming it was a 3.8 Turbo T/A) share the same engine and are easily modifiable to be killers. The only sad part of that story is that the cars weren't in great shape bodywise. If had unlimited funds I'd own one of each easily. Regardless no shame in that lose, and as we all learn there is always someone faster.
humanoid 03-29-2004, 10:52 AM Have you seen that Dinan S2 video? The 3.45 lsd gearing alone would help you tremedously.
RRdawho? 03-29-2004, 11:00 AM The Buick GN is not a car to be underestimated...those things can be made as fast or not faster than the fastest cars here w/o as many mods as we would need to see those types of numbers.
slocar 03-29-2004, 11:11 AM dont worry there is always someone faster...
i bet they would feel the same way if they had a run with big red
Modded Buick GNs rape Vipers. These are fast. Until they have to turn. :D
SilverStreak 03-29-2004, 12:40 PM Modded GN's are monsters, no shame or cause to be upset by that...
frayed 03-29-2004, 01:15 PM Dude, they are hopeless pieces of chit. Fast in a straight line, but wanting in every other category. I don't quite understand folrks surprise/anxiety/demoralization when getting killed by cars like a Buick GN, or an 8 second civic for that matter.
oldM3r 03-29-2004, 01:31 PM i was surprised that a rusted out, primer coated trans am was faster than the m5 and the gn. I didn't experience anxiety, surprise and some frustration yes. The frustration was that I feel the M5 needs to be faster!
3.45 gear ratio time, and i think I would have had them.
SilverStreak 03-29-2004, 02:44 PM Gears and get some real tires on there... :buttrock

I have the Prossos on now, mounted them last week.
Really need to sell the rx before I mod the 5
SilverStreak 03-29-2004, 03:26 PM Oh cool, you got the tires on there, awesome! So when can I drive it? :devillook
:D
MMallory 03-29-2004, 04:32 PM Don't even think about running a gold '70's Caddy in NJ.

Basically we have Steve Dinan in his S2 M5 racing a stock M5. Gustav from the M5board came down for a visit and recorded this for us. It was very nice of Steve Dinan and everyone involved to make this happen. Looks and sounds like Steve is enjoying himself and I can't blame him :D Driving that car must be a rush :evil2

Impressive  can that beast challange Big Red?

I would doubt it. I don't think anyone on the m5 board has run the s2's much faster than low 12's, if even that fast. There is much controversy over the package as no one can replicate the dyno results Dinan is advertising.
