Do any of you guys know of what kind of antenna to get for my tv reception? I have a DVD/TV/VCD/MP3 etc unit in my glovebox that has a coaxial input for an antenna (same kind of plug as what you see on the back of a regular tv)...I get no reception at all without an antenna....And with a regular 16g wire shoved into the hole, I get about 3 channels....Spanish TV, PAX, and some other crappy channel....No major broadcast stations....

Anyone know of a decent antenna that isn't ridiculously expensive or EVEN BETTER YET, a DIY to make one? :blueball

Thanks.

good luck you might not get too great of reception with the (no flame intended) cheap ass tuner you have, but i mean comeone that little for an all in one dvd player/tv tuner and you expect good or even decent reception? hell tv tuners alone that cost that much or more sometimes are not that great. i have a $400 alpine tuner and i get good, sometimes dvd like picture quality, but most often (especially while driving in the city) it isn't so hot. personnaly i would just use it as the dvd player and not worry too much about the tuner part.

but if you have to go to a local radio shack or CC/BB and get a compact (because it has to be in the car and you don't want your rear seat taken up) antenna along with a signal maximizing device

I totally understand that I'm not gonna be watching anything with HDTV quality but I just wanted to know if I could get stations while I'm stopped/parked without having to buy a dope ass tv tuner...that's all.

That fact that I even got pretty good reception on those 3 channels with just a foot long piece of wire shoved into the plug was a bit to my surprise...maybe with something decent, I'd get regular channels....

as long as you didn't read my post as any flame or anything of the like then its cool (becasue it was obviously not intended)

you know what you can try to rig up (and i have seen this work) for the meantime.... get a set of headphones (get rid of the headpiece that holds it on the head if applicable) and just plug the jack into the holo somehow... then see what you get out of the tuner. might just work (i know it did in my friends car on a POS handheld tv that we jerry rigged into his old ass beetle)

No..didn't take it as a flame at all...I just wanted to say that there was no way I expected good reception while driving...I just wanted to see if there was a cheap alternative to buying a real antenna since like you said, I really don't care to o much about the tv and value the unit more for dvd/vcd....

my alpine tv tuner (also is a VERY VERSATILE video switcher) gets about 10 or so more stations most crystal clear unless like i stated before i am driving through the city under the tall ass sky-scrapers

What kind of an antenna does that alpine unit use? Where do u mount it?

the alpine tuner uses a quad diversity antenna which mounts on the rear window (starts in the top 2 corners and splits down along the top and sides of the window almost the length of the window)

Without getting into signal theory of transmission, you really do NEED to get a tuner module if you want to pick up anything else other than the three or so UHF channels.

The coax antenna jack on these can either use the standard coax cable (like the kind that goes into your cable box) or they can use the mini-coax (similar in gauge to the satellite antenna wires)

Placement of the antenna should ideally be outside the vehicle, but can make do on the rear deck depending on antenna design.

btw here is a pic of the antenna for the alpine tuner
