View Full Version : Radical Theory on Break-in Period 98ArticM3/4 03-24-2004, 07:09 PM This was posted over at bimmerfest forum. What do you guys think about it? http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm SDbboy 03-24-2004, 07:13 PM They are talking about Honda engines. They say to not used synthetic oil during the break in period. BMW engines are totally different. For one the newer models come with full synthetic oil, what are you supposed to do drain it out and add regular oil? SilverBeam 03-25-2004, 01:56 AM "These same break in techniques apply to both steel cylinders and Nikasil, as well as the ceramic composite cylinders that Yamaha uses in it's motorcycles and snowmobiles." doesn't apply to us. bbh03 03-26-2004, 12:42 AM I have trouble putting confidence in a site written in advertisement style with a black (porno) background :) LA e46 03-26-2004, 03:37 AM They are talking about Honda engines. SilverStreak 03-26-2004, 10:25 AM Brian is right, that's for Honda engines, not BMW engines. Yes, there is a difference. PB_M3 03-26-2004, 12:50 PM What would be the most "ideal" Break-In regiment then? I am picking up a ZHP in munich and anticipate having a difficult time with me break-in. I will be driving about 2000 miles in europe before shipping it back. any suggestions? SilverStreak 03-26-2004, 01:08 PM -Don't take it above 4500 rpms for the first 500 miles. -Don't exceed 65 mph for the first 500 miles. -After 500 miles, gradually rev it up higher and higher in the rpm band. -Don't drive at the same actual speed or engine speed for a prolonged period of time, vary your speeds as much as you can for the first 1200 miles. -If you can avoid it don't slam on your brakes for the first 500 miles. -You don't have to, but I would, change the oil at 1200 miles, using the recommended weight and full synthetic oil. -After 1200 miles, drive it like normal... Some basic guidelines/ideas... MGregski 03-26-2004, 02:06 PM I have heard the same from a Supra tuner - don't use synthetic during break in. 98ArticM3/4 03-26-2004, 07:20 PM It does make some sense, even though I dont know that much about cars. MGregski 03-26-2004, 11:30 PM It does make some sense, even though I dont know that much about cars. It's about friction, synthetic oil reduces friction, that's why regular oil is used by tuners that build engines during the break in period. It lets the drivetrain "bed" itself in. Something of that nature. LA e46 03-27-2004, 02:09 AM what about this change the oil after the first 20 miles? makes some sense that most of the pieces of metal would break off relatively early. |
