View Full Version : Can someone help? My 02' has some issues.

I've got a few weird problems with my car. First of all, when I'm driving slow turning the car around going left, the car accelerates without my foot even touching the gas. When I turn around to the right (sharp) the car slows down by itself. What could that be? Someone told me it could be the floats on my 45DCOE's. I have no idea what it could be.
My other problem is that my car makes a weird tapping sound in the low rpms. The car used to sound like a diesel when I first bought it because the valve clearance was bad. We rebuilt the motor since then, but it still makes a little bit of a tapping noise. I have high compression Venolia pistons and a cam. The mechanic that has been helping me out said he backed the valves away from the pistons. He said the pistons are loud. Is he feeding me a bunch of crap? I've never heard that. I also heard that if I have a high lift cam it can make some noise too. Is that a bunch of crap too? I'm wondering if he's just getting tired of working on the car. Any help would be great. The first big autocross of the season is coming up in a week and I was hoping to have my car running right.
Oh, my last thing. My car has a long piece of all-thread that connects to the carb linkage and also connects to the piece that hooks onto the gas pedal underneath. I've heard of people switching that over to throttle cable of some sort. Does anybody know if there is a kit?
Thanks guys,
Aaron

The engine tapping is a normal sound, no matter how many times I adjust the valves on my 02 there is still a tapping sound. I've asked several people and thay all say it's normal. I've never heard of Pistons being loud.

I know Top End Performance sells a throttle kit for DCOE's. The wire is just the wire for the rear brakes on a mountain bike. There is a plastic (I think) tube that the wire runs through and there are 2 brackets that attach to pieces in the engine compartment that go on the ends of the tube to keep it in place. I'll email you a picture of my engine so you can see what I'm talking about. I would post them but they are large pictures and a smaller one will make it harder to see what I'm talking about.

I hope this helps and if you have any more questions let me know!

Sounds like you have a linkage problem causing your idle woes. I saw your post on the faq site and agree with what most say there. Check your motor mounts to make sure your motor isn't moving enough to move your throttle linkage.

As far as your tapping, that's pretty normal. You can always try adjusting your valves again yourself as it's not very hard but I have had about the same results as Lief in the post above - perpetual tapping... The 2002faq.com site has a nice writeup on the procedure.

Again, as Lief pointed out above, TEP has a nice cable setup. I'll add that I have used the single sidedraft version when I had a Lynx/dcoe 45 setup. It's the exact same linkage setup but modified for a single carb vs. dual carbs. It worked pretty good after I finally got it setup where I liked it. It is a different feel (not as smooth) vs. the mechanical linkage, but it worked just fine.

Thanks for the info guys. I really appreciate it. My mechanic buddy and I are in the middle of trying to figure out something different for the throttle linkage right now. I just pulled the gas pedal cable and all of the linkage out of a mitsu galant. We were going to try to rig that to work. But if TEP has a full on kit with the brackets, maybe I'll just do that. My throttle linkage is weird. It's like a long piece of 6mm all-thread that connects to the linkage at the back of the motor. My motor mounts are new, but they seem super soft. We were thinking the same thing though. We were thinking that when we turned, the linkage was being pulled on. We're going to try the cable type probably this weekend. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Thanks again.

Good luck this weekend! I hope it all works out. If you are thinking about the TEP kit it is a bit pricy, $125.

Here is a picture of what the linkage looks like (from TEP website)
