View Full Version : Aftercooler options beyond aquamist >
Jim M3 03-19-2004, 01:03 PM Well I am finding the choices with a Dinan kit are not what I thought. Apparently you can't put an RMS aftercooler on a Dinan supercharged car and make it work. So I guess I am left with only the option of aquamist as an aftercooler. Am I missing something here RMS said we would like to help but you would need an RMS kit to make it work.
marc1119 03-19-2004, 01:10 PM I am assuming that because the blower sits slightly differently in the Dinan setup for belt alignment, the aftercooler will not properly fit between the blower and the throttle body. I mean we all have the same throttle body size and we all use the same Vortech blower outlet, that is the only reason I can figure and the BPV may have to hook up differently back to the intake tube. Other than that , I do not what Osh may be thinking that the aftercooler will not work on a Dinan. ????
And you would need the RMS p/s relocation bracket for the aftercooler to fit.
DakarDave 03-19-2004, 01:15 PM that's weird.. unless something has changed with the RMS aftercooler design wise... it should work for you...
I know a few people that have the RMS aftercooler installed on a dinan E36 kit... no problems at all..
who did you talk to @ RMS? Osh? If not ask to talk directly to the man....

cal_guy19 03-19-2004, 01:19 PM I have a friend with a '97 M3 with a Dinan S/C and the RMS aftercooler
Jim M3 03-19-2004, 01:22 PM I talked to the owner and he said you will need several parts to make it work and may have to swap out Dinan parts for RMS parts. It didn't sound easy. How much do they charge for their aftercooler. We never got that far after he explained the mismatch of parts.

Thats a very different statement, than saying you CAN make it work with the use of proper parts and adapters. There are several people who have done it, and rMS has told many of us their aftercooler kit WILL fit our Dinan Vortech kits.

Did you write any of this down? I think it would be very useful for alot of folks on this board if you were able to delineate this for us.. The only part I knew we had to dispense with that Dinan uses is the Traction Control Throttle Body, since the rms heat exchanger requires the room for itself... thanks.
Jim M3 03-19-2004, 01:38 PM More than likely I am going to take my car to Fall Line motorsports in Chicago next week and discuss the boost upgrade with JP. He does a lot of supercharging tuning on M motors. He also told me the RMS kit should work on this car. He had never really heard of aquamist either (which suprised me). I think I would be comfortable with aquamist if I devised a guage showing that it was working. Most track sessions are only 25 minutes long and living in the great white north we already have the benefit of cool weather. The owner couldn't really tell me what parts exactly I would need, he recommended taking it to JP and have him look at it. I'll let everybody know when I get back from a trip to Chi town.

Dont have to 'devise' it.. It already exists! :) #DDS2
Jim M3 03-19-2004, 02:00 PM Wow, great you mention a part number here is it from aquamist? I would feel much better at the track knowing that is there. I would have to check the tank between every run and make sure there was still adequate reserves. A 20 minute track session will use about a 1/2 tank of gas on my car. I think for my uses aquamist is the way to go.

I use the 2 gallon tank from AA, which they fabricated the OE battery cover to fit. Clamps down solidly. Its expensive, but if you cant fit a 2 gal tank in the engine bay, and you want to carry this much fluid, you could do worse than this item. But, honestly, if yours is a frequently tracked application, I would install either the RMS aftercooler, or look into the air to air unit out of Texas.
cal_guy19 03-19-2004, 02:10 PM Go the the Aquamist web site. They list their flow gauge as one of their products.

If I had a 3D representation of the install area between the blower and throttle body, I could make you one. I put mine together, but you would need a TIG welder.
Any ideas?

paul e 03-19-2004, 06:30 PM Coop, just saw teh pics on your site.. Very nice. Question.. Is this exchanger meant specifically for the rms aftercooler? I wonder if yours is small enough to allow continued use of the Tracs TB, which the rms one wont fit with.
Also, youve bot a pic of what looks like a deeply vented E46 type hood on your site. Whats teh deal with that?
Jim M3 03-19-2004, 06:56 PM I think I may try to find a body shop to cut some slats in my hood as well. I would think that would really help at the track. If it doesn't totally butcher the hood.

Actually I have the heat exchanger mounted under the front bumper. The aftercooler is the "heat exchanger" of the intake charge. It was not designed with any particular aftermarket design in mind. RMS has a neat package. I still plan a more refined version later. Basically, I made it as big as I could, and it still fit.
The hood is an E39 actually I grabbed from an online catalogue, but I can't remember who it was. $500-600, I think.
