View Full Version : Done! AFM to MAF. Awesome!

Hi guys,

I finally did my AFM to MAF Conversion

I love it so so much. The response is just fanstastic. no more stupid AFM flap to restrict the flow, most people who are like me would know that the revs will drop below idle sometime if we quickly depress and press the accellerator pedal. it's gone now

and the air flow is just awesome. you have to feel it to believe it man.

ok, let's talk about how it's done,
i bought a 1998 E39 525i Siemens MAF, an aluminium connector hose, a silicon connector, and a 3" inlet Pipercross air filter

You need some sort of a chip or A/F device to tune the ECU to recognize the new air flow device.

In this case, the Unichip and Unichip tecnician did all the signal adjustments, conversion and a/f settings.

The plug to to the MAF will tap the ones from the former AFM and modified slightly. Air Temperature sensor isn't use in my application. instead, the ohms of a wire were changed to "cheat" the ECU of the air Temp sensor being there and there's only 1 reading which is a permanent reading that will never change according to temperature. Plus the air Temperature in Asia don't vary much, so i'm not worried about it.
it's quite techincal which i ddin't really get to absorb much.

anyway, i gained 5RWHP on top of the 160RWHP i had before MAF which was pretty good. but what's important was the engine response that i'm really happy with. No graphs and charts due to the faulty printer..

but there are pics. so enjoy!
cheers
Tom

the glowing header is NICE! sweet swap, i would alos love to feel the better response. So which software or chip or whatever did you use to tune it ? nice 240 in the back ground (i think) whats on top of that OH! and nice car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wikkid, is this conversion hard? , and what u gonna do put the Airbox back on? , or a cone, or what?

6piston
03-18-2004, 01:37 PM
hey Three25is:
thanks!

i used Unichip like i mentioned in my short story :)
I still can't get over the response gain i got.. pretty damn adicctive!

it looks like but it's not a 240sx if that's what you're saying. it's a Nissan Cefiro. a 4dr RWD sedan. i don't know what they call it in the US or they even sell it there

the one on top is a Nissan Sentra or a Sunny in some market. a regular 1.6litre sedan...

SA E30:
nope the conversion isn't hard. it's only possible if you have some way to make the ECU recognise the MAF properly.. like an A/F ratio device etc...

i'm going to put a cone. i had the big 6incher K&N on my AFM. the Pipercross Cone broke when i tried to shaft over the MAF... damn.
my friend's giving me he HKS Mushroom thing.. i don't dig it but i'm sure it'll keep my engine clean for a short while till i get another filter.. prolly another K&N...

cheers!

Without a turbo, M20's don't get cooler than that. Excellent job man. Great pics, too! How much did the whole conversion cost you?

wow, thanks!. hmm my sig, i never thought of it that way, since you said it... YEAH! E30s own all BMWs!!!

SlammedE30: thanks! time to do it man. believe me, it's AWESOME! it's like why BMW didn't do it in the first place. maybe MAF wasn't popular that time..

bmwQ: thanks! about 70USD for materials and 90for labour and tuning....

hey thanks!.
the extractors? they'll just glow if you floor the pedal for like 15seconds and after that everytime it's floored it'll glow

the stock manifold will also glow :)

Parts for $70? Where did you get the stuff from? How long did it take to get it fully tuned?

6Piston,

Great looking headers. Never seen them before. A couple of question:

What is the little adapter on the ignition wire going from your coil to your distributor? Is that a Plasma Booster from Ignition Solutions?

Is your intake manifold a Dinan manifold (extrude honed) or just powder coated?

Thanks,
Jon

unfortunately as much as i want to know, i really don;t know what headers are those, i got it swapped with a friend 2weeks ago for my stock headers...not a bad deal.

i have a re-piped 2.5 X 2 downpipes retaining stock center muffler(they're the best) and E46 Borla muffler. sounds mean.

spoilers, skirtrs bumper, everything,. the whole kit is BMW M-Tech II.

thanks ;)

bmwman91:
I'm in Malaysia, so i got it fom here :)

from what i know from my american friend here, he's waiting for his MAF to arrive from the states for USD60...

how long? about 1hr for installing and wiring, and another 1+hr to tune :)

Jon: i've never seen them too haha
It's an Accel Coil and that's also an Accel cable...
it could be a booster...

No, that's just a regular maniold with some high temp rough paint.. you could use BBQ paint :)

nope it's not extrude honed yet...

You mentioned the price of MAf and install with wiring and tuning. However the Unichip price was never mentioned. UNichip sells for about $750 in the states without tuning and install.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Chris E30 Cab
03-23-2004, 01:31 AM
Actually Unichip's prices should include a dyno tuning and 2 runs on the dyno, 1 before & 1 after, as they are to only be tuned by Unichip dealers.

Out here in Asia they cost appx US$525.

Any car can benefit from the Unichip, whether modded or not. 6-piston's & my stroker gained 15rwhp & 15rwtq just from the proper tuning with the piggyback unit........another pal with a 1.8L stroker obtained similar results as well.

Visit the manufacturers (Dastek, SA) website for more info on the Unichip piggyback unit.....

okay i found this interesting.

i've not tried it yet but it sounds logical since the wire mesh and plastic screen does restrict a significant percentage of the openings...

i was thinking of fabricating some kind of air channel to straighten the flow or some sort if i do it...

anyway, please read the aritcle. it's interesting.

I was under the impression the wire mesh made the airflow less turbulant, thus a benefit and should not be removed.

I have to agree. That is definately one of the cleanest engine bays in an e30 i've ever seen, and I work at a BMW dealership. Mine is the complete opposite. I only hope that one day (not any time soon) mine will look that nice.

hmm, you got me there.
no i don't know if it is analog or digital....

but i heard the signals are the same,it's just they rise differently

the 1.8 stroker?
it was based on an M40 1.6 and it was stroked using a M40 1.8 crank, rods, pistons and some other stuff i think...

bmwman:
no, that's not anywhere near an indicator for anything, it's the accel ignition coil which comes with that wire that has this built in capacitor or something which's supposed to benefit...

thanks!
hmm, i should be shooting it again soon, i've just put the hella smoked healdights back in and i want to refurbish the paintwork... i should do it then.
