I want to gloss paint my skanky "rubberized" stock 93 e34 side skirts but I do not know where to start. I really need to redo my battle scarred rear bumper, and front grill assembly as well.

Anyone ever do this themselves with spray canned paint or pro equip? If amatuer how where etc etc?

I got the car for 4900, 180k miles, 93 525i with 18x8.5 Hamann HM2's, full Bavarian Autosport brake package (4 x cross drilled and slotted) a set of stock winters, full bav auto suspension (stiff as a rock and real low) sway bars and all. But the paint needs some work. It was borderline deal i spose, but its so damn sexy and it seemed to work "perfectly". Batery is under the rear seat, which seems odd. And the air box assembly is cut in half so this gigantic slap on air filter takes up half the damn engine bay. I think it may have a performance chip as well since right around 2500 rpm it decides to give a rousing push.

Also replaced the arm rests, emblems and some weather stripping.

I think I am rambling, ill save it for another post

well, no one who actually knows anything is commenting, so here's my take::D

you're not really going to be able to strip it off fully. instead, try sanding it a little to get some of the high spots down and then paint it. You should use a flex agent in the paint, and probably an adhesion promoter/primer.

You should also be prepared for this to not work too well - your backup plan is probably to source the side skirts and mounting hardware from a 1995 e34.

you might be able to use Autozone primer, but for the color coat, unless you're using a gun, you're going to have to get a custom aerosol can mixed - your local auto paint supply store can do this. If you're in the middle of nowhere, try http://www.paintscratch.com

If you have access to an air compressor, HVLP guns have come down a lot - I think I paid no more than about $80 for mine.

good luck.

i believe when the body shop did UrineMachine's, they some what sanded it down to make it more smooth. you might want to PM him for more info.

thanks for the replies! I think I will give the sanding a go. I had no idea paint guns were so "cheap". Any idea what sort of air compressor I might need (PSI)? I might look into that...a friend might have one I could use.

I also think I should redo my rear bumper, someone tapped me and I have some gross scratches in the rubber, and when things get 3D u know it is time to clean it up.

Going to install my clear corners sometime this week, along with a new right high beam. :p Spent all day polishing my HM2's and trying to find an affordable, good caliper paint.

Any suggestions? I love the red, everyone loves the red...and since I am all black any color would work. Like yellow, but then I feel a bit like a bumble bee.

Shragon your e34 is tops...something to aspire to in greatness!

...now all i have to do is figure out how to pop off my center grill assembly...:) Reading the chilton's is always easier than pulling on body parts. Not to mention installing the arm rests that I should have by friday...
