I've got some vibration in my driveline. Confirmed that my flex disc needs to be replaced, along with center bearing supports. My mechanic thinks that the driveshaft will probably need to be replaced as well due to "dry" u-joints. That's the rub... that sucker is over $400 for a rebuilt unit. Anybody have any thoughts on replacing driveshaft? Is it a common problem; or should flex disc and bearing supports be enough?

That info is more than likely true.......The knucks can freeze up and cause vibs....I would suggest the flex disk, center bearing and the drive shaft.........Basically pay alittle now or a lot later....

I have yet to hear of a case where the center bearing rubber mount has failed that didn't also have a bad driveshaft. And in fact it is typically a driveshaft problem that causes the center bearing mount to fail. Your mechanic is almost certainly correct.

I had the same issue with my i/6. did all the work myself. rebuilt driveshaft (certified by BMW) through a shop in Portland was 475 after the core charge refund, plus $45 for the guibo (flex joint) solved all problems, runs SMOOTH now. I would just have the whole thing replaced while you're down there. I agree with thejlevie.

good luck

^^ agree with what they both said.

Also, unless you are totally ripping 1st and 2nd gear launches all the time, a major contributor to driveshaft failure/CV/center bearing wear is worn/sloppy rear subframe bushings and rear diff mounts. I would look into getting those up to par at the same time to make sure you don't thrash your new driveshaft.

Been there on the 540/6 with this. Swapped in new flex and CB at 85k and by 90k the new CB was trashed. Sloppy rear subframe bushings trashed it.
