Hey guys-I'm attempting to install my coilovers and completed the rear but am having a problem with the fronts. On the 2 bolts that are attached to the brake rotor area we CANNOT get them off. Me and jerome tried for a good while and could not budge them. I rented an electric impact wrench and that is not powerful enough, it was pretty old and crappy. So, if anyone has an impact wrench we could rent (i'll pay you $$$) for a few hours I would GREATLY appreciate it. Right now the car is on jack stand in my garage with the front end in the air awaiting its new coilover system...:az: BTW, i'm near columbia.

thanks
george

Hey George,

If you can't find an impact gun asap, try a simpler approach. Get some liquid wrench or PB Blaster at Home Depot and let that soak into the bolts for a solid few mins. Use a long breaker bar, and you should be able to do it. Mine gave me the same types of problems, but after going thru hell with my exhaust bolts, I PB Blaster any nuts and bolts well before attempting to remove them. Its the poor man's impact gun :)

Welcome to borrow my Snap-On cordless impact wrench. Live in Northwest DC and work downtown.

I was able to drill it out. The tool to have is one of those impact wrenches that you bang with a hammer.

Once it is off use some anti-seize and remember not to crank it down. It's just there to keep the rotor from falling off.

Greek, I forgot where you were again.... but if youre close, I can swing by with my Snap On as well....

People think all electric impacts are made the same... but SnapOn rocks!

You do NOT need an impact gun!

Turn the wheels to one direction or the other so that you are pulling up to loosen the bolts. Get a pipe to go over your ratchet handle to get more leverage. Pull up slowly, and do NOT hit it with a hammer. Remember, you can only push down with amount of your body weight, but can pull up with much more force then your 125lbs. :stickoutt

That's cool I could have it back to you by the end of the night. I'll also get you lunch or something at the next auto-x. What is it powered by?

John-Me and jerome tried last night with a pipe that extended it by like another 1/2 foot. I had the wheel turned to us too. A few times we slipped off and its starting to strip the bolt a little bi, that's why I'd rather use an impact gun. I might pick up a bigger breaker bar before I go home before I try the impact gun though.

edit:I'm a lot fatter then 125 lbs:(

well here's an update for those who care: (probably no one ;))

Jerome and I finally got the bolts free tonight, I think soaking them in the WD-40 last night helped:) It took us a while but we finally overcame the great strength of the bolts. I bought some crazy steel 2 foot long pipe from home depot, and we still managed to bend it but it got them free:). The pipe is the newest hero in my garage and now gets better treatment then all my other tools (all 4 of them-andy knows what im talking about:().

Thanks to Eric and Neil for volunteering your impacts, but it looks like in the end my brute stenght overcame!

Now, on to OTHER problems, I think i'm going to have to take the fronts tommorow to get the strut housings (I think) switched to my new fronts. Basically the part that goes into the strut towers of the car. I think i'm going to take them to a shop, shouldn't take more then 10 min I would think.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions
george

Bring them to my house Saturday, it takes all of 5 minutes per strut.

The person who suggested this to you is an absolute genius. To show your gratitude, you should buy this outstanding citizen a mod for his fast and powerful car. I hear he like Type R stuff, but that's just a guess.:dunno
