Got word that the PCA is having a test & tune at Ripken Stadium on 3/21. No pre-registration required, everything's done when you show up. Anyone interested?

I'm in.

A bit of a warning to those who have never been to a PCA autox though... It isn't as well run as a BMWCCA event. They tend to be more "by the seat of their pants". Austin, Bud and I showed up early and the course wasn't even set up-they were still re-designing it.

Tech consists of you showing up in a car that moves under its own power. They don't allow people to ride along-they told Andy he couldn't ride along with me during my runs. Made it tough because he didn't make the first walk through and they weren't exactly too informative in terms of where you were off course. They were a bit disorganized-they split a heat during the day.

If anyone else goes, best advice is to show for a walk through, your runs and then split.

Hopefully my experience was an anomaly and this will be a better run event because Ripken is a nice lot.

I've attended a couple of PCA events, and they weren't too bad. Maybe they purposely gave the BMWs a hard time, since the big $$$ car drivers always get stomped by the "poor" people.

That could be the case because I drive a poor azz Honda and they gave me a really hardtime. I will never go to a PCA event again.

I posted on the PCA website too about the event. I never checked back to see the responses though.:dunno

it is in Aberdeen, MD

Mapquest it.... it's quite a trek... and remember.. for those of you towing tire trailers, etc... the Harbot Tunnel toll is like $6

I might go.... I havent decided yet.. I think I'll just save my tires for the SCCA T&T the following weekend.

8:00-9:00 AM Tech

8:45-9:00 AM Late Registration

9:00-9:15 AM Mandatory Drivers’ Meeting

9:15-9:30 AM Novice Drivers’ meeting as required

NO CARS or DRIVERS AFTER 9:00 AM

We could meet at the MD House too. I need to be there by 7:30 at the latest to swap my wheels.

vjlax18

I got this from their website

"This event is a "Test and Tune" which will give you a chance to work on your car setup and driving skills. Several stations will be available including slalom, braking, and cornering exercises. This is a non-competitive event. "

I wonder what they mean by "several stations"? It does not sound like it will be a complete auto-x course :az: . Will it be timed?

Anyone have any insight?

I wil. It looks like only their seasoned autoxers will be there too because their school is that weekend, so they may need the extra people. We'll see. I wouldn't mind a couple of stations to start the year off, and some time to fiddle with settings. It would be good to be able to do a section and then change the sway settings and do it again, etc etc etc.

the way you said to go is a pretty fun drive, if you would prefer that. you probably want to link up to 22, rather than 543, though, if you're going straight there.

exit 85 head west, make a right at the first light Gilbert drive. (there may be a light right at the 95 ramps, so it may be the second light). you're there. There were a bunch of signs last time I was there (~a month ago), but they're doing construction on the 95 interchange there, so it may look a little different. just follow the signs to ripken stadium, and when you get to a stop sign, make a right into the stadium.

exit 80 is 543, exit 85 is 22. you want 22.

My best was an 87.1. Yesterday was a good time, but still loosely organized like last time-but not as bad. I liked having the 4 stations in the morning to work on different things, but the skidpads were so tight, after awhile you felt like puking. Afternoon course was nice! I really like the Ripken lot. yo yo yo,

The Ripken lot was great, aside from the big dip in the middle that you had to avoid. Overall fun event, good stations to scrud in the tires, the auto-x course could have been laid out better, but what do you expect from the P-club.

I think bimmers had the top 3 fastest times

I think we had the fastest time because we were on R-Comps. The black 944 or 951 with the street tires ran like an 80, where we were 76-78ish.

Does anyone realize what I just said? 76-80 seconds for one run? And it's too far away. The national tour lot isn't that long or it's really close to that. $1500 for rental.

I wonder what times that guy in the white 911 was turning. he looked really smooth.

you guys definitely put on a good show. One of these days I might learn how to drive a little and run a time that's not the slowest of the day :) I got spanked by stock miatas on all season tires :(http://www.honda-acura.net/forums/images/smilies/lmao.gif

It is time to start modding the car, Rob. That's what I do. :D

Autocrossing is DIFFICULT. The learning curve is very steep. I don't know what to say other than that. I learn new stuff from people every time I go out there.

The best way to get better is to become familiar with your car and do lots of events. Having confidence in your car and your abilities is paramount.

All my opinion of course.

Actually, I'll probably hit more of the PCA's autoxes. It's not as well run as BMWCCA, but all I have to do it get my timing right as to when to show and when to leave. It's close (only 30-40 min) and a nice parking lot. I mean, closed circuit course.

normally, sage advice. in this case, though, I feel like the car's power (and powerband) are making it hard for me to drive the car, rather than just reacting to the car driving me. I almost feel like a slower(or at least more linear) car that I could learn to push more would help me learn faster.

there's a good chance you guys may see the altima on an autocross course this year if I can't get the throttle figured out on the STi :) Of course, that means I'll have to uninstall the golf clubs and spare parts from the trunk. maybe.

I guess I'll just have to keep it on the streetzzzz, where it belongzzzz.

I'd honestly do a few events with no boost, if I had a boost controller. The electronic throttle and turbo spool are really messing with me, and when the power comes on, I feel like I'm hanging on for the ride.

If I had more experience, I don't think it would be hard to adjust to, since the power delivery would be the only adjustment, but at this point, I feel like I'm trying to adjust to everything at the same time.

not really an excuse, more like a more specific description of my lack of autocross skill :)

Rob-

You should probably ride with Fatih or have him ride with you at the next NCC event. I believe his car is modified, but I would imagine he would be able to help you.

Rob, it's a joke. ;)

Yeah, I would like to ride with a few people this year. In fact, I would like to let someone who is pretty good drive my car while I sit in the passenger seat. Glenn might be a good candidate since he is used to FWD.

I autocrossed FWD for three years :(

I don't know if you do this, andy, but we used to disconnect the front sway bars on the Civics (back when they had double wishbone suspension). The cars had so much camber gain through bump that they had crazy grip like that - and not having a front bar really lets you put the power down EARLY on a FWD with no LSD.

I'd love to take it for a fun run, I have good luck fun running other people's cars ;)

Yeah, that's cool. You are welcome to drive it anytime.

I thought about doing that...but I am looking to learn how to drive my car as it sits. I would rather familiarize myself with my car more so for the track. AutoX is more of a way to build up self confidence and confidence in my car.

But yeah, anytime you want to drive it....you can. I let Jed drive it. I drove his car. There was a pretty big difference. The little drift I did in his car was pretty fun too. :D He seemed to like my car. :) However, i am going to have less bottomend torque compared to last year. :(

I was reading about that in Grassroots Motorsports-for FWD drive cars you really don't want the front to be that stiff. This way you can get the power down better. Actually your Prelude is so much easier to drive than my car in an autox (probably because of your S03s...ahhhhhhhhh!). It would be interesting to see how fast John V and Glenn would be in it.

No practice. Just two runs in the Honda...one to get the feel, another to get the fast time.

Or, we can use my GTI to F around in, if you really want practice. Just find me a tow vehicle and a big, empty lot!

Right... I meant that I'd have to find a FWD to practice (AKA: take it to the streets where it belongs) on before the contest. I was sort of kidding :)
