I was out at Thunderhill raceway a couple of weeks ago and figured I'd try the in-car camera mount.

Anyhow, this is not a kill video but I did some passing and got passed myself.

Cool stuff. I thought you guys were gonna fly off T7 since I didn't know you guys only ran the half course.

LOL..... yeh, we ran the short course in the morning and the full course after lunch. I had a super session in the afternoon with lots of action, but I forgot to turn the camera on so all I had was the short course. The other thing was that it was hard to turn the camera on with the driving gloves. Next time I'll bring the remote control :D

Yeh, the Z06 was kept at bay through the twisty section (I did have him in the twisties :D) but when I got caught up behind the Monte Carlo and had to run at 60% of potential  the Vette closed in. Once we hit the straight(passing zone), and I got around the monte carlo the Vette was right behind me, and he went by. The Z06 is damn fast, but I'd always make up ground through the twisties only to watch him pull away on the straight.

Dave - Thanks, thought some of the street racers would be interested in seeing how our cars do on the track against others makes. Wish I caught the STI sooner so that guys can see how the E36 is able to keep up and pass current competition models.

You don't need any safety equipment except for a helmet...and you are surrounded by excellent tracks in VA. All you need to do is sign up and show up with an open attitude and a willingness to listen/learn.

cpunk2 - GC coilovers, dinan intake, m50 manifold, ss exhaust, uuc pullies. That's pretty much it for mods.

^ exactly... just go to have fun, and learn... it's a funny thing cause the speed comes by itself and you don't realize it till you start catching and passing people.

l3it3r - go for it man, you'll have lots of fun and it's cheaper then a speeding ticket!

lol, yeah, I need to start keeping it legal.. looked down the other day and I saw 145 get passed and 150 was coming around the corner... I need to slow down... speed is so damn addictive though :( Anyone here in the VA area reccomend a good beggining track? I can drive pretty well, just have never driven a real track before.

Ah yes, the short course. I went right past turn 7 on the first lap cuz I did the full track the weekend before. Great way to start off the day with an instructor. That was a good showing for the M3's that day -- there were 4 of us out there, right? I think the Z06 got passed by a modified Mini and the wife of the guy driving the Z06 got it on tape. The Z06 guy wasn't too happy about that but the guy in the Mini was good driver.

Anybody going to the Unlimited Laps event there on 3/26?

MPACT is always present for Unlimited Laps events, so you can count on 2 M3s and 1 corvette from us.

VIR is great, so is Summit Point. Kinda depends on what part of Virginia you are in.

Yeah, that's what you think right now. ;) Go to the track with the attitude you don't know anything and you'll be much better off. I've had plenty of students who thought they were great drivers only to get out-driven by another newbie in a much slower car.

Hey Nitty - You were in the black M3?

the Z06 was fast but I think the guy didn't really push it in the twisty area, cause I would always open a good gap and he couldn't get to me on the straight (well ofcourse until I got stuck behind the monte carlo). LOL ..... It was a great time and lots of fun! :buttrock

Yeh those mini's rock but not as much as the two modded miatas.

Yeah Roman, I was in the black M3. The M3's with intakes sound great. Who was the guy with the white '95 M3? That was a nice car.

As for the guy in the estoril M3, he only had it for about a week at that time.

BGM3

you gotta get an intake if for nothing more than just the sound it makes :) ... That was Martin in the white M3. He's also on this board.

I loved that video! It makes me want to try something like that in the future for sure. Just out of curiosity, what kind of speeds are attained in the "twisties" part of the track? It's really hard (for me) to gauge how fast you and the others were going.

Also, and I suppose I'm in the minority, but I really enjoyed the trancey music. When I listen to that kind of music in the car it makes me want to drive like that!

Thanks for the vid!

Rich

Rich - I don't know how fast I was going (never looked at the speedo) but around the twisties I was anywhere from 4k to redline in 3rd. Just before hitting the brakes at the end of the straight away, I was at the end of 4th.

I need to get a camera mount in my ride...hell, I need a camera too! LOL. TTYL, Tim

This was the High Performance Driving School that the SCCA puts on. Being a novice, I thought it was great cuz I had an instructor for every session. But I think an event run by someone like SpeedVentures would probably be better for a more experienced driver. I went with them the week before and they ran a nice event but I didn't learn nearly as much. And I wasn't too crazy about them renting transponders to people in the novice group.

ArcticFox
03-10-2004, 05:05 PM
No, thats not cool IMHO either..Transponders should be for Advanced drivers only. No need to "encourage" noobs to "see how fast they can go"! LOL.

Awesome video, BGM3!! Great driving, too, seeing that you were comparable to the Z06!!

Two questions:

1. Who's singing that version of Metallica's "Sanitarium" in the video? I'd like to check out their CD. :D

2. Any suggestions on camera / mounting bar setups? I'm in the market for both, myself. One more tool to critique technique. Also, have you considered using / is there available a wide-angle lens to capture steering / shifting technique on your camera?

Yes, I could see how you're confused, since it's such a butchered version, but it's actually Fade to Black :)

BGM3
03-11-2004, 04:21 PM
Nah, that was the Metallica song that has been technofied. Fade to black is by the Rolling Stones.

Phantom - I'll see who sings that song later when I get home. The camera mount that I got was from a website ( something Racing) and it was pretty cheap ($60-$70). You can do a search on BF and get the link or I'll see if I have it on the other comp. It works great with my carema since I have the image stabilazation and the mount itself attaches to the head rest supports. I have seen a wide angle lens available for my camera and I may get it sometime in the future.

The video does make it seem like we're going slow :)

Tim- I'm hoping to go with Laps Unlimited at the end of the month but I'm not sure since were buying a house and every cent counts. You gonna be there? maybe teach me a few things? ;)

ArcticFox
03-11-2004, 04:59 PM
I'd be happy to teach ya a few things. heheh.

Fade to Black is a Metallica song ya know....

I am going to Kauai early April, so going to the track just before then is not good.....I want the wife to be in a GOOD mood for HI!. LOL

I was thinking maybe Trackmasters on 4/12, but that may be cutting is close (I get back 4/10 and Easter is 4/11 I think.

Nothing else except Speed Ventures at Willows on 4/20 that I know of. Only T Hill days I see is NCRC on 4/1 and 2 (too close to 4/3 departure and that 4/12 day.

May 15 has Trackmasters at Laguna Seca! That would be fun, but I wonder if my car is quiet enough...I think not. Also NCRC at RENO (!) on 5/22 and 23. Not that could be fun! Overnight in Reno...woo hoo! Now that I think about it, I am going to try to get to that event. New track, outta town for a day, gambling, entertainment, etc. Hmmm. Sounds like a plan!

Otherwise, if that does not pan out, it would be NCRC at Thill on 5/28. Peace out, Tim

My bad. Yeah, it is a remake of Fade to Black, from Metallica's Ride the Lightning album.

Shame you erased our 1st session and forgot to switch on the camera on the second.Oh well next time. That Corvett p---ed me off.I caught him on the corners but the straight forget it.
It was a great day.The only thing was stupid cones.110 down the straight and then brake like hell for them.
Looking forward to the 26th with Unlimitedlaps.I dont see many m3's on the list.
