View Full Version : Wheel stud install questions

I just recieved the TC Kline 80mm wheel stud kit (w/ aluminum lug nuts) and a set of open steel nuts, and I have a few installation questions.

What torque should the studs be torqued to (inside the hub)? The studs appear to have a sticky red substance on the hub end, which I take it must be lock tight. Should I clean them off and reapply lock tight? What type?

No need to reapply lock-tite. Sounds like it's already installed.

BTW, the AL lug nuts suck pooh. I stripped four of them and had one weld itself to the stud all in 4 trips to the track.

Take the alum nuts and throw them as far as possible! They will seize ond if they dont they will strip. If you want some more I have a set I will sell cheap.

That's sorta strange. Why would they put locktite on them when they ship and then tell you to add more? Weird.

And, as Carrera and I have said, the lugnuts are 100% crap. I had threads strip, I had the head round off of one, and I had one seize even though I was running anti-seize.

If you want AL nuts, these are the ONLY ones on the market I'd run...in fact, I do run them:

Unfortunately, I can't find the site where I originally purchased them. The site where the picture is hosted above is from Austrailia.

Actually, just ran a search and found the site TeamZ4 gave us for the nuts...however his link doesn't work anymore and I can't find the nuts on that website either. Here's the original link:

They DO know have these from Skunk2. They look to be high quality, and are likely race tested on some of the Skunk2 Hondas that have run in various series (World Challenge):

Bryan,

I used those AL Racing Nuts you have in that first pic and after 6mos those are starting to die on me. I've stripped 2 in the past month and have one "welded on" as you mention. Keep a couple extra handy...;)

Rob<-steel nuts from here on out, :D

Interesting. We've been using them for a full season, and we generally change tires 6-8+ times a weekend with an airgun. They aren't showing any signs of rounding off, thread stretching, or siezing (we use a small amount of anti-seize).

I'll be sure to keep that in mind (we have 5 extras anyway), but compared to my previous experience with the T.C. Kline AL nuts and with standard steel nuts, I've got to say I'm 100% satisfied with these.

It's a good thing I ordered a set of 17mm open ended steel nuts as well. AL nuts seem like a good idea, but it sounds like they're not worth the trouble. IIRC, Porsche uses AL lug nuts. I wonder if they have the same problems, and if not, will they fit?

Also, How tight should the steel nuts be? 80 ft-lbs?

I torque mine with an 80 ft-lbs torque stick.

I had the Aluminum lug nuts also, what a nightmare. They were aweful, they were a pain in the butt to get off. I went with some steel ones that I think are H&R's but I don't remember now. No problems at all, work like a charm!

I've tried contacting TC Kline through e-mail and phone, but I haven't gotten a response yet. :dunno

What should I torque the studs to?

I usually torque mine to 85 but I think stock is 72?

does the alloy nut binding/stripping problem apply to TCK's NASCAR pro-kit stud set? just wondering, I just ordered that set. Thanks.

It has nothing to do with the studs and everything to do with the nuts. I don't know what kind of nuts the NASCAR studs come with.

I've seen most all of the studs on the market and I like the RRT studs the best.

the NASCAR Pro-Kit has steel nuts. I guess the problem doesn't apply. good to know.
