View Full Version : Finally! A fun race yesterday
I had been curious about these 4.6L Cobra Mustangs (I had been schooling my gf's bro's 5.0L Cobra Mustang for the past year in my 97 and 95 M3 with no problem ever).
I had remembered while in Miami I had out accelerated a 5.0L Cobra Mustang, and then tried to race a 4.6L 300 bhp one on the freeway and he slightly pulled on me (in my 97 with chip/intake/flywheel).
Then last night, about 1am, I come up along side this 4.6L Cobra (not the newest body style, but like '98-ish), and I hear him drop a gear, WOW that thing sounded awesome! Had the Viper GTS-R "vroom"-like sound, not the typical, burbly and deep V8 the 5.0s put out. It sounded a lil' bit modified, to say the least...Great chance to test this car vs his, OPEN room ahead. We raced twice, and both times I SO BARELY pulled on him (but it was obvious who was pulling). We started from about 75mph (perfect for me in 3rd) and pulled all the way to about 145mph. I had just about my car and an extra 0.5 car lengths ahead of him. Really close race! I know he must have been pretty surprised! He wouldn't let up at first, and then try and race again! haha, funny stuff. My car wasn't stock by the way, but I can't say what I've done because the mag won't let me, :(..but I am normally asp, ;)..Let's just say this car now pulls considerably harder all they way to 6800 RPMs. CYA>PM3
Kevlar 03-30-2001, 08:39 PM Awesome story! Funny... I tried a Mustang Cobra from a rolling start '98ish and unfortunately, I got handed my ass:o . Guess I'm going to have to pay attention the that mag when it comes out...
VOLSBimmer 03-30-2001, 08:59 PM Good race PM3, I for one Cant stand Stangs and their owners, so I always love to hear one gettin beat! I've raced about 5 or 6 V8 Mustangs in mine (intake/exhaust/clutchstop), and I've beaten all of them, none were Cobras though.
Kevlar, that is surprising to me, those Cobras aren't that impressive, being that they have 300 hp. That one that beat you had to of been modded a lot, because I would think a M3 with slight mods would beat a Cobra 4.6L with about the same mods. My brother has a twin turbo Stealth, and when he was bone stock (91 w/ 300 hp stock, now he has intake and downpipe) he kicked the crap out of 6 Cobras, all modded and of different years, a 93 (5.0 foxbody style), then some 95 5.o liters, and a couple 4.6Liters--he said one of them even had fatter tires in back and almost skinnies up front. He ran high 13s in his Stealth bone stock last fall, and with the Stillen intake and downpipe he just put on, he's hopin for mid to low 13s; his turbos really whale now with the downpipe, it took out 2 cat. converters. Anyways, try another 4.6L Cobra sometime that doesnt' have many mods, I'm sure you can take him. Good Luck!
By the looks of this guy's wheels, looks (slightly lowered), exhaust and the sound (SUPER aggressive--best sounding v8 I've heard--made me think initially that I'd get worked)..it wasn't as much a big-block Muscle-car like the 5.0L sound, it was a somewhat higher revving sound, really awesome (you guys ever hear the Viper GTS-Rs on the road course? Sort of like that!...yes I know they're V10s). Anyways, I am sure he had stuff done to it, but I won't begin to guess what. It surprised me how hard he was still pulling after 130mph. My buddie's 5.0L Cobra (24k miles) would have been (not exaggerating) 4-6 car lengths behind by then..too much low-end torque, not enough HP. They tend to hit a wall after 125mph.
Kevlar, VOLSBimmer is correct, IMHO. With your dyno results, you should not lose to a stock 4.6L Cobra (should be pretty even, or you should pull slightly), and you should be able to "toy" with a stock 5.0L Cobra, no problem (they're the ones that say "Mustang" instead of Cobra in the back, yet have the Cobra insignias on the sides. They have different, Forgeline-looking wheels [I think they quit those on the 4.6s, not sure], and have smaller inlet holes towards the rear of the hoods) CYA>PM3
Kevlar 04-01-2001, 02:14 AM It had to be modded then... cause I know he walked all over me like yesterday's dirt. It was a rather humbling experience... I just passed it off as raw torque that put him ahead of me.
Vitolo 04-01-2001, 04:31 PM Reminds me of when I was in high school! hehe I loved the V8 sound rumbling through the student lot revving my car while everyone else had civics
"Oh those were the days...."
I used to have a 95 Mustang Gt 5.0, while my dad had a 98 Cobra. The 5.0 was sold, and on occasion I took out my dad's cobra while I had the M3(for comparisons sake! ;) ) Those things are FAST! It pulls very hard, and with mods im sure they fly. I decided I wont race one with my 99 M3, without mods im sure id lose badly.
I raced one once and the guy had all wheelspin so I spanked him which suprised me. I think M3's will pull off the line but the Cobra will walk away on top end.
VOLSBimmer 04-01-2001, 05:33 PM J Vitolo, I wouldn't say walk away on top end, stock for stock, an M3 and 4.6L Cobra should be about the same, the difference being the driver. I had many run-ins with the Cobra in my last car, 93 Z28 w/ LT1, and I spanked them all, although mine definately wasn't stock, but neither was the Cobra. Anyways, M3 vs. Cobra should both be runnin low 14s stock, so I think they are close.
Brandonb 04-01-2001, 05:54 PM I raced a 98ish Cobra the other night too. I honestly thought I would loose. We were on the highway, side by side and I waited for him to go. At 40mph he took off and I dropped it into 2nd. We got up to around 90mph and my rear bumper was even with his front bumper. I was so happy! I slowed down and the pissed off Cobra driver punched it, cut me off and got off on the off ramp. A good day for my M!

VOLSBimmer 04-01-2001, 11:51 PM way to go BrandonB! I love seein a Bimmer puttin a Stang, Cobra no less, in its place!:D I've noticed too that a lot of Stang owners don't like to get beat, some of them just think they own the road! But we got to let them know they arn't the only ones who can whup a little butt every once and a while!

Damn, and he was practically stock! (Only Dinan CAI!) That is a good win over the Cobra 4.6L (if it really was a 98). I would beat the 5.0L Cobras by only a lil bit (one car length--well maybe a TAD more, ;) ), with my 97, 221 rwHP/10-lb fly.
you're also correct, the 4.6L Cobras are similar to the M3s stock to the quartermile (low 14s to high 14s--I've seen 'em), but the Cobra seems to mostly pull over 100mph (seen some at 101.5, etc), which compares to the Z28s as well (but the Zs also could break 100mph). M3s, stock, MAY not be able to hang QUITE as well as the 4.6s, stock to stock at speeds over 90mph. That extra rated 60hp should be more than enough to not get fall behind and M3, in my opinion.
I raced a 4.6L in my 95 M3 with my girlfriend in the car!!!
At the time I had these power mods:
Jimmy C chip
ERT pulley
SS headers
Dinan CF intake
ES Tuning exhaust
We were on 684 S in NY about 3 months into the relationship, so I didn't know what to do when this reddish(burgandy) 4.6L Cobra passed me doing 100 or so.
My girlfriend looked over and said "Go get him"
I shifted to third and caught up to this guy who was weaving like an idiot through traffic.
I followed cautiously, till we had a gorgeous straightaway sitting in front of us.
I sat right behind Pony Boy in 4th at a magical 4500 rpms waiting for him to gun it. I saw the "little puff of smoke" and I mashed the pedal.
It took about 2 seconds for the power difference to kick in, but it did at about 110..
I hit the blinker just to piss him off, and went in the center lane to pass him.
When I was passing him my girlfriend was giggling and waving at this angry guido behind tinted windows.
I casually passed him, and used the blinker again to get in front of him in the left lane so he could read the badge.
Fun race!

mpbmw318is 04-02-2001, 04:10 PM hey buddy watch the slurs. . . ;) way to hand him his ass by the way:)
Didn't mean to offend.. I only said it for descriptive purposes;)
coincidentally, I got my first taste of a Cobra 4.6L (1998-which I am told was the best/strongest years) with chip mods, 4.10 rear end (!!) and I think that's it. These are not THAT fast! I was stunned. Definitely a little quicker than the 5.0 Cobra, but I thought with this gearing that the car would waste mine. I was thinking to myself the whole time: "This wouldn't keep up after 40mph!" Interesting. CYA>PM3
