View Full Version : Painting stuff and recommendations
Section8 02-23-2004, 12:29 PM Ok, got a few things I want to get painted, and 1 or 2 things I'm about to order that will need a coat as well. I want to do it all at once obviously. I'm no painter, but would consider doing it myself if I felt reasonably safe doing it (If you guys give me a pep talk!) :)
OR, if that's not something I should consider, where can I take these parts to get painted? I'm in Roswell, and don't want to go too far if I can help it.
Looking to paint: Headlight liner/trim, headlight eyelid kit, DTM front spoiler, M3 lip soiler, and *thinking* about getting the exterior trim painted. (I switched out my license plate piece for the straight piece.. and it got me thinking about painting it again).
Suggestions please! Telling me I'm silly to paint the parts myself works too, just thinking of $ right now.
Sparc_it 02-23-2004, 01:18 PM I would get it done professionaly. Want to make sure its an exact match. Are you also thinking about doin the black trim aound your car? If you did it would look good!
On another note...Thursday or Friday, were you over by the powers ferry -> terrell mill -> lower roswell? If so I was behind you :)
VANCE 02-23-2004, 02:19 PM wait until you have the $$$....you will be much happier with the end results!!
i want to paint the trim around my car as well...posted a question about it on antoher board and got no response..
so.....can the factory trim be painted?
will it look like shit?
does some one offer a painted kit?
Want2race 02-23-2004, 03:10 PM I would offer to paint it for you. But I just dont have the energy anymore!
Bremsen 02-23-2004, 03:59 PM TBO, with your car and what you want painted you're better off taking it to a pro. Shouldn't be more than a couple hundred to paint it all and the cost of materials if you were to try it on your own would probably run upwards of $100 (sandpaper, flex/plastic primer, color matched paint, clear coat, etc). Not to mention the results probably wouldn't be nearly as good.
Also, if you want it done soon a pro is your only option, temps and humidity need to be kept within a range and we're not anywhere near that now. 70°F+ and <50% humidity. They accomplish this with the paint booths.

Heh, prolly I work close by there, off of Windy Hill & Powers Ferry. I bet I was rushing, because I was late to a meeting that morning.. :D
Hey thanks for the 'Hot Wheels' suggestion, I wasn't really going to paint my parts myself, I figured that would inspire everyone to give me a few recommended locations to go to. :) (It worked!)
Still debating the trim painting, I like how the black breaks it up a little, and adds a line to the car. I've seen a number of Alpine White cars on the 'net with the trim painted to compare to. I'm still torn I guess. But all the other stuff, I'm very ready to get painted.
I like the idea of a mostly stock looking car, with a few things done. Painting the trim really changes the look. And I gotta say when I saw my first BMW with the trim painted on the road (Mighta been a stock sports package car) I wasn't really awed. (Was the Tit. Silver) In fact, with the verrrry dirty rims it had at the time, and the need for a car wash, I almost mistaked it for a (sic) galant.. (Ahh, the shame!)
I need to pay more attention at the next meet we have to everyones trims and how it looks overall on the car. Then you guys can give me some more convincing talk.. ;)
BTW: Hey VANCE!!! Glad you found your way here from BMWboard. This is the best 'local' forum for Atlanta I've found, hordes of folks here with lots of knowledge to share.

yes, the trim can be painted as long as the correct primer is used. It looks very good depending on your car color. Some of the board vendors here will paint body parts before shipping them to you for a very reasonable price. I think KHY or MMS are the ones that can do it.
Want2race 02-23-2004, 07:18 PM I race wheel2wheel with John.. He resprayed the entire side of my old IS300.. Damn did it look awesome!
I agree, go to john.. But its usually $300+ to paint anything

Ouch... I guess I better decide on the trim painting, and do an all or nothing paintjob then..
$300 total for the paintjob? Sounds like something you'd hear on Ponce.. :D
Bremsen 02-23-2004, 09:20 PM $300+, yeh thats kinda pricey for some small trim pieces.....not too bad if they do all the installations as well. Their work does seem to come highly recommended though.
I have to say the place Ali goes did excellent on his door/quarter, as well as the body kit. Seems like their pretty reasonable to. Its called Formula One and its in Smyrna, you should pm him for the addy/#. Never hurts to get multiple quotes anyways.
You will probably save yourself some $$ if you just drop off the parts for painting and then install them yourself. You should be sure to fit the parts to the car first though, you don't want to be messing with drilling and such after paint. Its up to you to decide if you want to mess with the mouldings, but I personally like the contrast on lighter cars. You would probably want to drop the car off for those as well, I don't know how hard they are to get off.....one of the reasons my M3 ones are still sitting in a box.

I think its the time to setup. So if you wanted to repaint a hood, fenders and lets say a door, If all are prepped it turns out cheaply. But if you have 1 molding piece done.. They still have to spend the time matching the color and mixing the paint..
Go there! Get a price! See what Holtz can do!
