This is what I should have done from the begining. A lot cheaper than building the hell out of an M10. Few minor facts: The 2002 manual transmission and 320 5 speed will bolt on with minor fabrication. The S14 head will bolt on an M10 block but will NOT work. I wanted to do this rather than a whole swap.

Why won't it work? I thought if you changed pistons then it was a possible combo... isn't the laupa 2002 running with that setup? I was planning too on running that setup...:az:

You can actually get it to work, but with all the problems you will be running into, a full swap would be better. Problems like, how will the cams spin? M10 has one, S14 has two.how will the fuel pump work? the M10 setup is mechanical. I think Laupa used one off the 3.0csl, csi? not sure. Also how ill the ignition work? The M10 has a distibutor, the S14 does not. Im not sure why Laupa did not use the S14 block, its an awesome block. thicker walls with rib reinforcement also with a higher deck which makes boring and stroking to a higher liter more tangible. If you are looking to just have a twin cam engine without boring and stroking, I have an M42 which I was going to put in my 2002 but didnt. Id probably sell it for less than the price of a complete S14 head.

My guess why Laupa did so or at least why I wanted that setup was to have a shorter stroke. The bore of the m3 is interesting but I wouldn't want any more stroke than the 2002 already has, if revs and reliability are to be matched together then you want a short stroke, it also make generaly smother engines.
As for the m42 thank you, but I don't think there really be that much gain from it as the m10 has more aftermarket support and therefore in the end more potential or so I think.

Granted, the M10 might have more upgrades available for it, but it will take all of those mods to make it put out as much power as the M42 does stock. This has been discussed many times in the E30 section with M10 318 owners. With a chip, exhaust & (useless?) intake I put down 130WHP. 130WHP in a light little '02 would haul pretty well. You can get a complete M42 with tranny for under $500 since there is little demand for it (unfortunately, it seems to be quite underrated), just check the E30 section. For something that has a forged crank & rods, self adjusting lash adjusters with hydraulic lifters, as well as adjustable cam gears from the factory one would think it would get a little more press. Anyway, there's my $.02
