View Full Version : 740iS steering - tight and strange?

Greeting Folks-

I just picked up a 740iS, and have a question. The steering feels very "tight" at center, in the sense that in turning the steering wheel itself to the left or right a few degrees off center, is stops where you leave it and does not re-center itself. Normally, this would be something binding in the steering linkage or a bad caster/toe adjustment.

Also, I'm finding these cars have some very unique (and sometimes undesirable)characteristics and am wondering if this is "normal".

I don't like the fact the car will not recenter with suttle steering movements.

TIA.. Ray

Ray,

Power steering fluid absorbs and retains moisture. Over time this moisture affects the power steering fluid's properties. Acordingly, flushing the power steering system is the first step in diagnosing steering issues with the E38.
The second step to to inspect the inline screen at the bottom of the PS fluid resevoir.

Cheers

Hello there-

Thanks for the tip on the fluid flush - any brand fluid in particular that is best for these cars?

Thanks again.. Ray
