View Full Version : Why does almost all E38 owners go with M pars or E65 wheels?

Just curious to know why these wheels are so popular. Is it because they are inexpensive? What's wrong with AC Schnitzer type II wheel or the Hamann PG2 wheel?

Find me the Schnitzer or Hamman for under $2K, with tires, and I'll buy them...

And the MP is just plain a classic look for the E38.

I also like most of the Alpina offerings (even if they are a bit dated) as well as the Hartge Classic.

Finally, BBS has several very nice wheels. For me, it's a matter of budget (and I/m still looking, BTW).

I will say that the star spoke 95 (off the E65) has really grown on me - several folks here have them. I think the lines of the wheel complement the lines of the E38 pretty well.

I knew those pics were coming!

The Fikses blow the budget, and the SSRs do too, though by a considerably lesser amount...

Love both those wheels but couldn't list everything out there.

hamann's H2 under 2K...just look around more...they're out there...I've talked to about 3 or 4 folks on BF that have these wheels for sale WITH TIRES....right at or about this price.

however, I got mine for less :)

Oh, here we go.

First, I am still stock, so no real bias here.

That said, to label anyone who adds MPs to their car as a sheep is unfair. I give (at least those of us here on BF) more credit than that.

The MP happens to look great on the E38. I believe that is the main reason why people go with it.

Do some "follow the crowd"? - yup. But certainly not all - some just think it looks good, period.

In 18s, the SSRs run in the high $500s per and the Fikses in the $750-$900 per range.

Add tires and you have some cash out the door.

I guess I'm just a bit different. I got the Rondell's because I had previous experience with their build quality, and I knew they'd last. Never mind the fact that they look pretty darn good. Some have even followed my lead, not to look like most others....

YMMV,

Thanks Reed,

I am looking into the Hamann PG2, they are about $1100.00 to $1200.00 each plus tires.

Is that the Hamman pictured in your first post? If so, it would look great on the E38.

Serious coin, though.

Yeah those are it. I already have the AC Schnitzer in the above pic. but i would like to have a 2nd set. Yeah kinda expensive but I only have to buy them once.

Not in Ann Arbor but other parts of MI are plenty. However, my baby only gets to be driven long distances and weekends only besides being in storage for the winter.

The problem with the deal on BF is that the tires are thin ..(like Mine). I probably have to spend about $1000 to get my tire up to par...

i guess it's a matter of taste/preference and i DEFINITELY would not call people who go with MPars "sheep." if EVERYONE got the same aftermarket wheels, that'd be "sheep." MPars are, however, OEM wheels. it wouldn't make sense to call someone who rolls out of the dealership with a 2001 740Sport w/Mpars a sheep now, would it?

i personally don't want the "tuner" look on my 7er and often regret the hamann front spoiler that i got because i think it doesn't look too subtle and refined. that being said, 2 or 3piece wheels with rivets don't do it for me. if i wanted to go for new wheels, though, it'd be a set of HREs 840Rshttp://www.hrewheels.com in 19x9 and 19x11 in the rear. unfortunately those are arguably the MOST expensive wheels and would likely come out to be over $6k for the set.

OEM Mpars & E65 Star Spoke 95 Wheels are direct fit, good looking, quality (as with many aftermarket) wheels. Attractive price certainly is a plus. I sold my 18" Mpars on my 2001 740i Sport for a set of OEM 19" Star Spoke 95 because of all the above reasons. Plus I had a set of Mpars on my 97 740i, wanted something different. The paint color on the OEM Star Spoke 95 is a direct match to my 740i's Titanium Silver exterior, almost as if it was designed for that particular color.

Of the two wheels you posted, both look nice, any pics E38 with them on ?

I was never a huge fan of M//Wheels but they came for free with the 01 sport so I have them now! I have grown to love this look, even though I first thought it looked too "urban" when they first came out.

The statement "The sheep like M-pars cause that's what everyone else has..." is totally untrue for me. I'm not a sheep, just someone who bought a car with M// wheels on it already! No sheep mentality here - maybe wolf mentality, but not sheep.

This is the look I really like (pic below)... or of course the Rondell 58's (who wouldn't love them!!!)

John,

i love the design of the Hamann PG2 but 6 or 7 E36 3ers/M3s on my campus are running those wheels i'm just too used to seeing it on a smaller BM. i personally wouldn't use them as i find the rivets too aggressive and more suitable on a done up tuner car.

Well, I didn't want to ruffle any feathers, but if you want my straight up opinion, YES! The Hamman wheels are not for me. I just don't like that look on a 7. I don't like the Borbet look either on a 740i. I just really prefer stock M//'s or Rondell 58's. I would buy the 58's in a heartbeat if I didn't have a car with the M//'s on them already. I DO like the pic below - they are 2003 http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/6/web/486000-486999/486345_59_full.jpg http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/6/web/486000-486999/486345_33_full.jpg

Style 32 20" staggered set up from a 2003 745i sport. The wheels are 9" wide in the front and 10" wide in the rear with 245-40/ZR20 and 275-35/ZR20 respectively. These are from Artem Martinov's cardomain site.

Happy hunting,
Steve

Hey John - Don't be sorry - they're not my wheels:az:

Glad you like the more aggressive wheels. I live in the Washington DC area and things are VERY conservative here.

Good luck with your choice. You really can't go wrong with any of the ones you picked.

They have very good feed back on ebay. Send them an email or give them a call and ask them where they got the wheels from.

Agreed.

If you like them (and I do, too) get them.

Plus, I think the Wheel Exchange is reputable - they wouldn't still be in business if not.

I suppose you could contact Hamman directly and ask them about WE...

I think people go with the E65 or the M-pars because they've seen them on the car and know how they look...when I got my Rondell 58's I was worried because I had not seen them in person and didn't know how they would work...Roy Cya's pics helped me make the decision and I'm really glad I went with them.

Getting some new springs next week, so it will give it a better stance.

I'm getting springs from UUCMotorwerks that drop it about 1.5" all the way around, but Rob sez there's a spring pad that will lift the rear by 10mm (about .4") So, I'll have about 1.5" drop in the front and about 1" drop in the back...

I'm not necessarily looking for the drop, but the increased performance of the progressive springs. I'm also getting new struts, shocks, control arms (front), thicker sway bar (front) and we're planning on fabricating some mounting points in the rear to put the 13mm sway bar on :D

Sounds like fun! I've pretty much done what you're doing but chose H&R II (1.9"/1.3") springs because they provided what I wanted, plus UUC didn't have them yet... You should feel the car when doing high speed runs/turns, it's on rails! Ask Simeon and some of the other Sun7 guys...

I guess progressive springs might give you a softer ride straight line and come into play when in turns...

Enjoy!
