View Full Version : First race of 2004! Civic Si Hatch sucks exhaust

Heading south on State in the direction of home last Sunday I came upon 106th South. For those who aren't familiar with the area: State is three lanes wide, after 106th it merges into two in roughly 50 feet.

Now, from a distance, I see the far right (merging) lane is open with what looks like a hooptie in the lane I will need to merge with. No problem I think, I can probably take him. ;) So I move all the way over, as I come up to a stop I see a new Civic Si hatch in front of the hooptie! A late teens/early 20's kid driving with his girl in the passenger seat.

I quickly decide it's on! I am 99.9% sure this kid thinks he can take me. So I get ready for anything. Heart beats faster. Palms get clammy. My right hand gripping the shifter. At the last minute I question whether or not this kid will actually go off the light...the light turns green and I ease out the clutch.

He jumps out of the hole! It only took a second for it to register and my foot hits the floor. Uh oh, I think I may have screwed this one up!

Nope. I close his lead and gain a half a car through first. As I shift to second I see him inch forward suddenly. Bam! I hit second and pull forward again, this time his front bumper is at my rear. The lanes are merging NOW. Is he smart enough to move over and let the race continue? Yup. Good boy, must have read my mind.

Through second I pull another car length and he is in full view in my driverside rearview. I had been watching a car ahead pull out into my lane so I took it up until I thought was a safe distance to slow down in time. I tap the brake pedal twice and hit the brakes. I notice the Civic does too, no ricer fly by.

I was watching my surroundings too closely to make sure I didn't hit anybody. I don't even know what RPM's I shifted at out of first. I just went by feel. I remember having enough time to glance at the tach as I passed 4k. I wish I would have taken it higher :(

328i:1

It's snowing pretty good here. As I've been typing this we accumilated a good 3 - 4". :( Can't wait for spring. I need to get out of Utah. I don't cope with the cold and snow very well.

It's cold out, but the rice is cooking fast:D

Nice kill, at least you didn't score a flyby. Was the car stock?

euro4life
02-03-2004, 02:27 PM
Stock or not? I honestly don't know. Sitting at the light, I was guessing it was stock.

No suspension mods, wheels, exhaust...nothing. After racing it it almost sounded like it had an intake. :dunno

Careful about making such sweeping generalizations.

There are plenty of swapped, turboed, or S/C'ed Civics out there that would hand most cars their a$$!!!!

Yeah, and Civic hatches, those with the 160hp engine, are pretty much on par with the heavier, stock 189hp 328i's.

Good kill.

I'm relaxed... don't worry.

But you probably have seen for yourself that there are people here on this board that can't even comprehend the fact that a *gasp* Civic could be fast. Simpletons.

good run..

i'm sure people think the same thing about mini cooper S.. wasn't till I started reading up on those things that I realized they could give 328's a run for their money.. it's all about hp/weight ratio...

Has anyone seen teh video of the Civic Hatch vs. the Viper? It will put you in perspective and make you listen to a civic before you attempt to stomp it.

HHAHAHAHAH, come on man, ON PAR? The 328 would smash the civic hatch- not to mention the extreme difference in torque...:nono

euro4life
02-15-2004, 11:15 PM
Nope. I'm with Hugo 99.9%. Nearly the same.

Gearing makes a big difference too. Even with his higher redline we were still shifting at very similar points.

I just have a very hard time understanding this.... The 328 has 190 hp, and the civic has 160. The civic has 111ft/lbs torque while the 328 has 220....I have also seen the 0-60 times on both cars. Explain

132 ft lb @ 5000rpm

Final Drive 4.76:1

I eat my previous post! These things are pigs. If you like Hugo, I'll stir fry yours with a little teriyaki and tofu to help it go down. :D

To this day I do not understand how people on this forum are unable to comprehend the fact that a "Civic" with the right amount of modification can be as fast if not faster then most BMW's on the street. I personally took the beating of a lifetime by a hatchback before I realized this....

Nice kill, but I am bet'n he was not stock. To keep up like that with a heavily modded 328, I would say was pretty impressive. Oh, and I thought "flick" was the first kill of the new year.:D

i pulled a civic hatch with a gsr motor in it by only a car length when i thought he was gonna pull me. Those civics can be made sickly fast, my friend had a turbo si that would rip most of us m3 guys a new one unless they were also fi'ed. I give much respect to the civics that are tastefully modded and that can give us m3 guys a good run if not spank us. Like they all said, its all about weight to power and gear ratio's. Heck I wanna buy a civic hatch and throw in a GSR motor and slap a turbo on her just to see the looks on peoples faces when I rip the living hell out of them.

what are you talking about, :biglaughb Even those SRT-4 Neons are sickingingly fast stock and could run dead even or even beat an M3 E36 stock. Anything that can be modded have potential to beat, draw even or even maybe loose. You'll never know :)

Well, I do understand that many of those heavily modded rice cars can be pretty damn fast, but against a heavily modded 328? Those things have absolutely no top end, I have driven one before and it really sucked. Off the line they are pretty quick, but after a certain point they can only do so much with that pussy of a 4bngr. Besides, the 328 was geared for top end with its straight 6 engine.

Nah, the 328 was geared for economy with it's 2.93 rear end.

Just so you guys know, he was NOT keeping up well at all. I was eating him alive in each gear. He caught me offguard at the line. For me to catch up and gain nearly a car through first gear I would have had to be significantly faster than he was. I stopped pulling inbetween shifts, as soon as I hit it in second the murdering began all over again. The entire killing lasted all of the distance of the intersection and 20-25 yards. Garunteed stock. I thought I heard an intake but thats not really going to help him in a race against me. :evil2

The 328 would murder the civic on top end, there is no getting around it.-- Do you have a stock rear end?

I think people forget at times that anything can be made to go fast with enough money into it, from BMW, to Chevy's, to Honda's to Kia's to even a scooter (saw one smoke a LT1 Firebird....... )

Yup Hugo, they most CERTAINLY are, they have 163hp if I'm not mistaken. My best friend has a si Hatchback, Vtec deal, whatnot. He keeps pace with me in my 323 until we get to about 85 or so, then I pull away slowly.. No performance mods on either of us yet..

Much as alot of folks here like to 'classify' folks as 'ricers' or whatnot *Seems like chest thumping to me..*, those little Hondas are quite a little ride if you want to mod a car, and turn it into something totally different from what you bought.

Ya wouldn't catch me in one, but a nice fast car is just that, no matter who built it.

I guess name calling in middle school drags into young adulthood for some..:stickoutt
