View Full Version : How fast is a 2002? E30VOLUTION 02-02-2004, 03:52 PM How fast ? Leif E. Bronn 02-04-2004, 09:55 PM Depends, off the line and top speed regular 2002 - fast for its time but slow by todays standards. 2002ti - a little faster (rare, not imported into the US) 2002tii - faster (buy pricey) 2002 turbo - fastest (very rare, under 1700 made and not imported ot the US, expect to pay around $20,000 for a good one.) or do you want to know how fast they can be made. My 76 will take most newer BMW's off the line but once I hit about 60 I'll fall behind. Top speed was rated at 103 MHP for the regular 2002 but I've had mine to about 120 or so, all you need is the power and the right gearing (320i 5-speed). If you have more questions let me know! VwAlex 02-04-2004, 09:57 PM Leif what has been done to your 2002? Leif E. Bronn 02-04-2004, 10:06 PM Lots. Bored to 2.1L 304 degree cam 11:1 compression Total seal piston rings Weber 45DCOE carbs Daul valve springs low pressure fuel pump. 4-1 header into straight pipe. E21 320 5-speed E21 Recaros E21 radiator wheels 15x7 w/205/50/15 front 15x8 w/225/50/15 rear E30 M3 style fenders (on the 75 but everything is being switched to that car in the near future) Lowered 2.5 inches Koni adjustables front and rear strut brace w/ battery relocation to trunk Nardi Steering wheel No rear seat NO A/C No bumpers (it's so low they wouldn't help me anyway) That's all I can think of right now, if I think of anything else I post it. VwAlex 02-04-2004, 10:09 PM All this should make you faster than a lot of car out there. More than 120mph I think. Leif E. Bronn 02-04-2004, 10:21 PM I had to slow down at 120, I didn't have the suspension work done so the car started to get very unstable. VwAlex 02-04-2004, 10:25 PM Yeah aerodynamics aren't that great on our car compared to newer bimmers... Leif E. Bronn 02-04-2004, 10:34 PM I know, 2002's are shaped like bricks. I forgot to say, I should have around 185 HP at the crank. Thats just basing off dyno sheets of cars with similar set-ups, so I'm not completely sure. VwAlex 02-04-2004, 10:36 PM I was thinking 180hp too, in a 2000lbs car that makes a pretty good power to weight ratio. Should be good to chase s2000 us spec e36 m3. Leif E. Bronn 02-04-2004, 10:40 PM I haven't raced any M3's or S2000's but once the M3 hits 80 i'm gone, although I do still have a good top end. I'm hoping with the carbon fiber fenders and soon hood and trunk it'll weigh 2100 with me in it. Dakar95M3e36 02-06-2004, 08:10 PM any pics? Leif E. Bronn 02-07-2004, 06:51 PM Here is the link for the photos. It is an ongoing project racecar. It's the album titled 2002 http://photos.yahoo.com/leif_bronn Villanuevas_BMW 02-09-2004, 02:51 AM Originally posted by Leif E. Bronn I'm hoping with the carbon fiber fenders and soon hood and trunk it'll weigh 2100 with me in it. WHOA! WHOA! hold on! where are you getting these C/F body parts?! I found a place that sells raw C/F and was going to make them myself but im intrested in this Leif E. Bronn 02-09-2004, 03:52 PM The group buy won't be ready for a while becasue the guy starting it is making sure it will be a quality product. Some info can be found here. http://www.bmw2002faq.com/talkshop/forum/messages/109447.html Also, What kind of motor do you have in your 2002? Villanuevas_BMW 02-09-2004, 07:29 PM Stock carb for the mean time but a very well built short block. Lightened blue printed and balanced. Lightened flywheel, knife edged crank, Bored stroked to 2350. 3 angle port and polish in the head. A lower compression than yours since im force feeding it one way or another this summer. Now answer me this. We are both on the same page on how to make a 2002 fly, make it light. Im going to be buying some harness' soon but the kind of harness depends on if i want to have a cage or not. You see people at the track taking out spare tires or anything to loose weight. Now does adding an 100 odd pounds for a cage worth it? People say that the loss in power to weight is substituted by chassis regitity. We dont have the torque of an 8 or let alone a 6cyl to compensate for extra weight. what do you say? Leif E. Bronn 02-09-2004, 09:06 PM I'm not sure if adding the weight is worth it for racing. It you look at the pictures of my 2002 that got totaled you will see why I want a cage. I refuse to take my 02 on the track without one. http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/leif_bronn/album?.dir=/58c7&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/leif_bronn I want the cage becasue when a 2002 rolls over if you don't have the cage you will likely die. The only reason I lived in my 02 was becasue the stock seat broke upon impact and fell back into the rear seat. I guess it depends on the racing you will be doing. Autocrossing, in my opinion doesn't need the cage but for club racing I think it does. As far as force feeding the 2002 a turbo will require a fuel injected set up. One of the guys that runs the BMW 2002 FAQ is working on building a supercharger kit for the 02's. I am thinking about biulding another 02 with the SC. I'm guessing you went with the M3 crank, if so where did you find one? Villanuevas_BMW 02-10-2004, 02:05 PM This is the cage im looking at www.i/oportracing.com http://www.ioportracing.com/images/product/rb-race.jpg Not sure if it will help the front as much on a rollover but stiffens my weak rear end of my chassis. My crank was a stock crank, not S14. Im not really on 2002faq too much but is there an on going thread about the S/C 02 project? I have one but still figuring out how ill do it. I also have a BAE turbo kit but if i was going with a turbo i would want an fmic. Also i dont have plumbing for it, headache and a half. Im leaning toward 318i manifold with motronic for my S/c. Miniumum plumbing compared to a turbo, bolt on , done. Was going to use a carb but my brake booster will be in the way and my carb will stick through the hood. Mongrel motorsports used a carb but took out their brake booster. cant go fast without brakes Leif E. Bronn 02-10-2004, 02:58 PM The thread about the S/C isn't an ongoing thread, he just posts updates about the kit whenever he finds out more or when people ask about it. The cage I'm going to end up getting will have more front support than the one in the picture. I just found out I might be able to get a turbo from a 320 so I don't know if I'll stick with a S/C if the turbo is still in working order. If you are concerned about the pluming for the turbo you should start posting on the 2002faq because there are a few people that have done it and could give you some good advise. What size bore do you have, I thought that anything over 2.2L using the stock crank isn't good because the cylinder walls start getting thin. Villanuevas_BMW 02-12-2004, 02:32 PM 92,88. biggest mistake was not going with an S14 from the start. The block is designed so much better. Thicker walls, ribs to reinforce, and thicker deck. 93 would be no probelm with that block Leif E. Bronn 02-12-2004, 03:25 PM One day I'll drop a S14 in a 2002, but that won't be for quiet a while. Villanuevas_BMW 02-13-2004, 02:42 PM How did you roll it? Oh yeah, sorry bmwz3nate, we almost forgot about the question. Just like any car it can be as fast as you want it to be with time and a shat load of money. http://www2.lauparacing.com/ http://koti.mbnet.fi/mikkiz/index2.htm Leif E. Bronn 02-15-2004, 07:00 PM The van in the pictures hit me from behind and pushed my car into a ditch. When he hit me I was knocked out so I'm not sure exactly how it happened. steve k. 02-17-2004, 11:16 PM Hey, Leif, and everyone else!! i've had my 2002 at over 135. It was able to keep up with a first gen M5 and M6 till about 125mph. Then started to drop back. the car is very quick, and can be set up to run a different speeds. steve k. Leif E. Bronn 02-17-2004, 11:28 PM Steve I know I've seen seen your car on the BMW 2002 FAQ but what kind up setup do you have. steve k. 02-17-2004, 11:50 PM Originally posted by Leif E. Bronn Steve I know I've seen seen your car on the BMW 2002 FAQ but what kind up setup do you have. nothing too complicated, the 135mph speed was achieved witha older motor, but with a 3.91 diff. The current set up on 13" tires gets to about 110-115mph Suspension: • Shortened Strut Coilovers. (Ireland Engineering) • Bilstein Sports Strut Inserts from VW Rabbit (front), Bilstein Sports shocks (rear) (Ireland Engineering) • 400lb/350lb front/rear springs(Ireland Engineering) • Adjustable Camber Plates (Ireland Engineering) • 22mm hollow front sway bar, 22 solid rear sway bar (Ireland Engineering) • Front strut tower brace (Ireland Engineering) • Rear strut tower brace/battery holder (TEP) • Urethane bushings all around (Ireland Engineering) • 13x7.5 8lb Lenso wheels • 225/45R13 Hoosier Tires Brakes: • Tii master cylinder • Steel braded brake hoses Drive train: • Crane HI-6 ignition • Pertronix Igniter • Dual DCOE 40 side drafts • Ramflo air filters • All moving part are balanced • Ported head • Aluminum flywheel • Sports Clutch • Ireland Engineering Header • 2 1/2 inch pipe • 2 Magnaflow glass packs • 4.10 40% lock up Limited Slip Differential Miscellaneous: • Recaro Seats from 320is • 3 core radiator • 80 amp alternator from 533 • Optima 51R Battery (26lb) moved to the trunk. • Turbo flares steve k. http://www.kgb-racing.com/images/ax/ax020104.jpg Leif E. Bronn 02-18-2004, 12:01 AM What kind of cam and does the Crane HI-6 ignition and Pertronix Igniter make a big difference, I'm thinking about getting them? Also whats the redline? steve k. 02-18-2004, 01:13 AM The cam is stock. All the internals of the motor have to be stock for Street Prepared class. The Pertronix Ignitor is a must have!!! You will never have points problems. Crane 6 is a good improvement. it improves the spark. allowes you to increas the spark plug gap so you get a better combustion. At the price that Jegs or Summit sels the kit og Crane HI-6 + coil, it was a great update. The redline is set at 6500. Stock cams starts to drop the HP after that. steve E30 Stu 03-10-2004, 07:54 PM Don't mean to barge in, but I saw the question "how fast is a 2002" and it reminded me of my dads old Inka '71, with an Evo II S14. To this day (I'm now 19), I clearly remember being picked up from elementary school with my 2 brothers, on a Friday afternoon, by my dad in the 2002. On the way home, we caught a 5.0L GT (late 80's) on a roll, and with Pete shifting the S14 at 8000 every cog, we absolutely decimated the 5Liter car. :D So yes, 2002's CAN be made fast...just takes the right tricks (or a motorswap, in this case!!) Leif E. Bronn 03-10-2004, 09:41 PM I'd love to have an Evo II in my 2002. I also remember being picked up from school in my dads 2002, in high school it became mine and I still have it (see avitar). So your dad is Pete McHenry? I was just reading on another forum how he is the man to go to for the S14 conversion. The thread is here http://www.bmw2002faq.com/talkshop/forum/messages/117621.html He might get a kick out of what people have to say about him, some very happy customers. Do you have any pics of the 71 Inka? canard 03-13-2004, 12:21 AM I also rolled my 2002.:bawl It was a '71 I'm going to part it out. If anybody needs ANY parts, really ANYTHING, I will most likely have it. I loved it so much that I got another one, but its a '72 and a Tii. Contact me: (360)293-7205 laid_canard@hotmail.com Leif E. Bronn 03-13-2004, 01:17 AM Sorry to hear about your 2002. I want to get my hands on a tii in the future. As far as selling parts post on www.bmw2002faq.com they have a for sale section and it's probably the most active 2002 board. You have email. motoyen 03-13-2004, 04:33 AM If anyone thinks an 02 is slow, tell them to check out this vid! Anyone understand what he is saying? vid link (http://lsd.newmedia.tiscali-business.com/bb/redirect.lsc?stream=sport1//de/motorvision/classic/mvc55tra-bmw02_wmt_adsl.asf&content=content&media=ms) Leif E. Bronn 03-13-2004, 02:24 PM I can't play that video but there are a few 2002 videos here http://motorvision.sport1.de/coremedia/generator/www.motorvision.de/Rubriken/Videos/Motorvision_20Classic/Videos/Tracktest/mvc71_20Volvo_20Amazon.html They have lots of videos of various cars. I also have a clip of a tii being chased by a police car on an autocross where the 02 beats the police. motoyen 03-13-2004, 04:38 PM I've seen that autox vid. I love how the cop car is sliding around ALL over the place and is still no where close to the 02. |
