In replacing the small paddles with the larger ones, it seems I broke the inside of the right switch (the paddle is fine).

What is involved in replacing the switch? Can this be done without removing the steeering wheel?

Naturally this happens on Friday evening when I can't reach BMW tech.

What I broke inside was a small cube of plastic acting as a buffer between the paddle "stalk" and the actual internal switch. When the stalk of the right upshift paddle was difficult to insert, I turned the wheel clockwise to see what I was doing. The buffer piece was now resting down. If I had turned the wheel counter-clockwise, the buffer piece would have moved, with a little gentle help from a small screwdriver, back into the switch stops allowing me space to push in the paddle.

So I used a little force and shoved the stalk through the buffer thereby jamming the switch. (sigh)

Anyone reading this and wants to replace the paddles, just be careful when inserting the stalk that you do not dislodge the buffer. I hope to post photos of this soon. BTW, it cost me $163 for 2 new internal switches (only sold as set) including installation. The front of steering wheel as well as the airbag had to be removed.

The new paddles finally installed are well worth it.
