View Full Version : Keeping wax off the bumper strips
Shawn323iC 11-08-2001, 10:03 PM Ok, so everytime I wax my car, no matter how careful I am, I always manage to get wax onto the bumper strips and side moulding. Can anyone offer some tips so that this doesn't happen, or, for when it does, how do get it off. I've heard of the eraser trick, but that doesn't work as well as I'd like.
Thanks,
Shawn
BMWDRIVEN 11-08-2001, 10:33 PM Im with you...If anyone knows how to remove it, please speak. I was told that Forever Black works very well for "refinishing" the moldings.
I use wide paper tape. The kind that is yellowish. It doesn't leave any sticker residue and keeps the wax off your moldings.
og325 11-09-2001, 02:48 AM Back to black works really well :)
Lopaka 11-09-2001, 02:53 AM Logical answer...
Don't wax your car :D
On my 95 ///M3 unfortunately no bumper molding to do this with as I have shaved moldings, but my 93 325i, I use forever black about every 3 to 6 months depending how bad it gets. It works wonders.
aaron 11-09-2001, 12:10 PM To get it off:
Use dish soap. It breaks down oil (and wax).
If that doesn't work try paint thinner diluted in water (be careful to to touch paint). When you are done, be sure to wash the area good to get rid of the thinner.
To keep from doing it in the future:
Get ZAINO BROS. polish. The best stuff you will ever use. You can get it on plastic/rubber and it doesn't leave residue!!
IMAGE&STYLE 11-09-2001, 01:33 PM i waxed my E36 2 weeks ago.... and after i was done there was tons of reduce so i took a stack of tooth pics and started to slightly take off the areas where there was the flim left over it works great but it takes for ever!!!>.....
i still have some spots i haven't taken care of....
David 11-09-2001, 01:57 PM Question: How do you remove wax from the textured black trim of a BMW?
Answer: Not paint thinners. You risk ruining your paint. Don't use any harsh chemicals as they are also no good.
So then, what should you use?
Are you ready for this?
Answer: PEANUT BUTTER.
It works. I've done it. Just don't use alot. Dab your finger in the pb and work it into the wax stains. Wipe it with a towel after, and then wash it with car wash soap. The PB breaks down the wax very well.
I tried dawn and it didn't do anything. Anybody here who uses blitz wax knows how bad and how stubborn the stains are to remove.
PB did the tick. But like I said don't slather a whole gob on.
I usually do all the trim first, then give the whole car(including the trim) a good wash.
Give it a try. Let me know how you like it.
IMAGE&STYLE 11-09-2001, 02:00 PM hey im going to try that this weekend!
- does it smell afterwords ?
KmanM3 11-09-2001, 03:05 PM I have heard that a simple pencil eraser works as well. For good how-to-articles on this kind of stuff check www.carcarespecialties.com (http://www.carcarespecialties.com)

If you put your nose right up to the trim, then you can smell PB a bit, but no biggie. And, it dosen't last.
I'm not very good with internet speak. What does "LMAO" stand for? And what does "ROFLMAO" stand for? I see people use them but I have no clue what they are saying.
And, I have tried using an eraser to remove the residue. It didn't budge the blitz. Only PB did.
Russell328is 11-09-2001, 03:53 PM Peanut butter does work, but it's a tad messy.... I'd recommend forever black or back to black or whatever it's called.
LMAO = laughing my ass off
ROTFLMAO = rolling on the floor LMAO.
Hahahah = How are Harry and Henry and Hilda and Harriet?
IMAGE&STYLE 11-09-2001, 04:02 PM oh and LOL = laugh out loud....
:D
aaron 11-09-2001, 05:02 PM Oooops - in my e-mail regarding paint thinner I said:
(be careful to to touch paint).
I meant to say be careful NOT to touch the paint. Just put a little dilluted thinner on the end of a rag and don't touch the paint. I works for me.
Back to Black worked great for me, and it keeps them black.. don't get it on your paint, leaves residue.. hard to get off..
Take some crest toothpaste and polish up your headlights while your at it too! It works.. paste only, not gel..
BMWDRIVEN 11-09-2001, 11:03 PM I tried a bit of goo off and it worked good. I have back to black and it comes off way to easy. I heard that forever black lasts for a long time.
94_325is 11-14-2001, 02:12 AM i have tried back to black and it works. but after a couple weeks and a few days of rain, residue comes back and is just as worse as before. so i used that stuff that mechanics use to clean their hands. that soap stuff with the little grains of something in them(not the bar soap tho) and it works. used back to black after and looks good. but it rained again today so when my car is dry ill let u know if the wax is still there. damn, never let your gf wax your car lol!
autox320 11-14-2001, 02:20 AM it works well and is a permanent dye
use an eraser. a simple eraser will take it off completly.
Bob ///M3 01-05-2002, 02:21 AM Bump up!
Matthew C Smith 01-12-2002, 11:55 AM I found that to keep it from getting on there some tape works great. I got some painter's tape, the kind that you use to make sharp edges. It worked great.
And to get it off I found that a tooth brush and some wax and grease remover from PPG worked excellent. Then I followed that up with some meguiar's rubber vinyl and plastic conditioner.
