View Full Version : Questions 4 those w/updated Rocker Panels...
ny-sevens 01-21-2004, 06:02 PM If I update my Rocker Panels to 99+, how do I jack up my car? I assume I have to get a jack from a 99+...is that right?:dunno
For those who let their bodyshop install them.. what else did you give them along the the Panels?
Is this a easy DIY job:confused: ?
Also is their a big price difference for the 01' painted vs. the 99' & 00' unpainted.
Thanks.
DaveClement 01-21-2004, 08:16 PM You need to purchase a '99 or later jack. I found out the hard way when I had a flat tire. The previous owner put on the rocker panels but did not change the jack.
You may also want to change the jack pads from the round '98 and earlier style to the rectangular '99 and later style.
The bottom of the skirt is held on by a few conventional bolts. The top is held on by little snap in rivets. You have to drill a bunch of holes across the top edge of the rocker panel. They need to be spaced to match the pins on the skirt, which is about every six inches or so, if I am remembering correctly. You insert the female sockets into the holes and slide the male pins into clips on the skirts, then they snap together.
I believe that the parts are the same for the painted and unpainted ones. The only difference is the cost of painting them. I do not believe that they can be purchased already painted. I had a local body shop do it. I think that it was about $125 or $150 with the parts off the car.
I have a Jet Black car already, so I wasn’t sure how much difference the body colored paint would make. It made a really big difference. I was quite surprised.
Don’t forget to get new trim for the bottom of the door and along the top of the skirts. The ’98 and older style is rubber and bends in to meet the old style rocker panel. The ’99 and later style is hard plastic and bends out to meet the edge of the new skirts. It seems like a minor detail, but it really does make the new skirts blend in to the lines of the car.

NY-Sevens,
I added the 99+ rocker covers to Bettie and Evan's 97 Dinan7 last summer. The details of this mod are cardomain web site with photos and tips. The work is not hard to do at all and since Bettie and Dinan7 are Jet Black, we bought the black covers and did not have them painted.
The jack from a 99+ e38 or a small bottle jack is needed after this mod is done. Changing the jack pads might be a nice finishing touch but the round ones fit and work fine so I left these as they were.
The prices for painted and primed are the same in my ETK? I'd check this with a dealer of course. The black ones we bought got pretty beat in shiupping so I'd think twice about buying them painted unless you plan to have them retouched.
The sill covers come with gaskets, clips and grommits and the only extra parts you need is the body nuts for the end clips (4 ea needed).
I have one iL length cover left over that got scratched up so if you plan to get your painted, the body shop can clean up the scratch and paint it. I would sell you this one for 1/2 price of the unpainted one. email me if you are interested, I still have all the pieces, gasket, clips and grommits.
regards,
F Johnny Klyde 01-22-2004, 09:07 AM what about the cheap man's way - just repainting what you got to match the body and sticking it back on?
anyone tried this?

johngoga 01-22-2004, 12:24 PM Does anybody have any pictures for these jack pads. I have a 1997 and upgraded to AC Schnitzer side skirts and i also need to install these jack pads. Can anybody tell me where they are located or pictures of their location would be very helpful.
Thank You,
John

On my 99' they are located behind the front wheel and in front of the rear wheel, the only thing I don't know is if earlier models would have a mounting point for these pads on the rocker panel. You may have to modify a bit for them to fit.
Dave C. what did you have to do?

How do i replace them, do the pads just pull out? I have the round ones and would like to install the rectangular '99 and later style. Do you have the part numbers for the rectangular '99 and later style?
Thank You,
John
ny-sevens 01-22-2004, 02:22 PM So jcarey, the rocker panel on your site is:
1ea. 51-71-8-242-715 Left rocker panel cover
1ea. 51-71-8-242-716 Right rocker panel cover
Is this the part # for an iL (which I have) painted in black or unpainted?
If so, does NE1 have the part # for the un-painted 99+ rocker panel?
johngoga 01-22-2004, 02:36 PM I need the part # for the pads, i have the AC Schnitzer side skirts
