I recently disconnected the battery in my '93 325 iS for about a day or so (getting ready to install a new clutch). I postponed the clutch installation and reconnected my battery. Within the first few minutes of driving after this, my "Check Engine" light came on and my engine began to disengage back to neutral intermittantly, causing a complete loss of power. If I take my foot off the gas and disengage the clutch, then engage it again ... the engine regains pulling power for a short period of time. This happens especially on cold mornings. Does anyone have any ideas on this?
Thanks ... Rick

How can the engine "disengage back to neural"? From my understanding, the engine can not change gears. If you have a manual transmission (which is evident), the only way to disengage the engine from the transmission is to put the gear shift into neutral or by pushing the clutch in. Am I missing something?

I'll be driving along (doesn't matter what gear) and suddenly the car's drivetrain is somehow disengaged. The engine is still at the same RPM's. If I clutch it and hit the gas again, the drivetrain kicks back in for a couple of seconds before disengaging (somehow) again. Very frustrating. I'm thinking that the engine computer got messed up (or reset) when I disconnected the battery for a day or so. I'm going to have the car put on a computer to see if there any codes I'm missing that might tell me something more. At this point, I can't drive the car the way it is. There are times when the car will go for several miles without this happening, but when it starts to happen it'll do it for quite a while.
Thanks for your input ... Rick
