Picked up these for free today...off an 8 series (special thanks goes out to Bernard Girma for parting with them)...was thinking of using them as semi-dedicated autocross wheels....
Kumho Ecstas decent tires to be buying/mounting?
(Don't want to go r-comp...too expensive, and I'd like to occasionally use these wheels on the street)...

You autocross your E32 7? That's cool. I love to see you hustle that thing around an autocross course.

LOL!...I guess my 6month hiatus has brought even new people (or people who simply didn't know from the past) that this is news...but yea...

Kumho R comps should be about the same price as the Ecstas, no?

They're about $40 more per each tire.
Might be using the wheels as occasional canyon/fun run type events...so sticking with the normal street rubber is both cheaper and longer lasting..

I would make sure you stay away from the Kumho Ectsa Supra 712. A lot of people seem to like the Kumho MX's for maximum grip street tires. Bridgestone S0-3's are popular, but expensive. The Falken Azenis Sport, BFG G-force are also good auto-x tires.

Falken Azenis Sport's are about the best autoX street tire you will find (for less than $200 anyway), but the sizes they come in are pretty limited. The Kumho MX is probably second best in price/performance. I have used the MX's at AutoX and DE and they were fine, although they were starting to overheat by the last few laps of a DE session.
In my ecperience, the MX are much better in the rain than the Azenis Sport's. Also, you can flip the MX's side-to-side if the shoulder wears out. The Azenis can't be remounted, but the outer tread blocks are so huge that you probably won't need to. If they come in a size useful for you, go with the Azenis, if not the MX should be fine.
There are tires with better grip, the best if probably the BFG G-Force KD, but they are about $200 a tire, and not really THAT much better.

P.S. if you get the Azenis, make sure they are the Azenis Sport, NOT the Azenis ST-115, which are TERRIBLE for autoX.

If you're going to spend money on tires other than the Continentals, just get R-comps. It's pointless to have 2 sets of wheels, each with street tires, unless you plan on reverting to stock very often.

He's got a point there. If you are gonna swap tires for autoX anyway, might as well get some R-comps. You can drive them on the street to and from events without much trouble. You can even swap them the night before. I know plenty of people who do this regularly, and as long as it doesn't start raining too much, there are no problems :)

I was wondering which Ecsta's he was referring to. There's the Ecsta Supra 712 and Ecsta MX street tires, and the Ecsta V700 R tire (and of course the old standby Victoracer V700).
If you want a street tire, definitely pick the MX over the 712. But, as others have pointed out, if its a dedicated set of wheels, just get R tires.
