A bunch of us are planning a trip to the Dragon in Late April of 2004 and rumor has it that if you are caught speeding over 80mph in North Carolina... you go directly to jail and bail money will be required.

Is this true? Should I bring bail money?

Nah. Not true. I *think* at 25 over, they can maybe take you to jail, but mostly, it is the discretion of the officer.

Visit the tailofthedragon.com site - they have a few Law Enforcement Links to read up on - very good info

That entire site is pretty good actually. You can see if any other groups will be on the Dragon while you are there, whcih is helpful when trying to get some good runs.

I was there a few months ago, and unless a group does something completely idiotic, and / or create a lot of negative attention for themselves, you should be fine.

PM me if you'd like specifics. I've made 3 group trips there.

I have run the dragon several times and those cars are very hard to see. I had one somehow get behind me without realizing it...Pulled over and given a friendly warning about the minimum for a ticket in that area is $200.00...

Nice cop but stern....

Be sure you have a V1 or Escort 8500 so you know in plenty of time if they are using radar... Otherwise keep your eyes open......

Tail of The Dragon is Bimmer Heaven !!!_____HAVE FUN !!!

BTW, if you can go during he week you almost have it to yourself....Weekends are busy !

I honestly don't think that you'll be hitting 80+ mph on the tail.

Spped limit on the tail is like 30 - 35, easy to exceed if you are driving for the fun of the road...

True. On the trail itself, I don't think I ever got over 45, and that was for about 5-10 seconds

A friend of mine just went to court today for his speeding ticket, and he was taken to jail and held for 12 hours upon his arrest.

133mph in a 55 zone :D

I just got a 73mph in a 45 zone. I was actually in a 25mph zone because it was an exit ramp, but the cop wrote it up for 45 and said if he felt like it he could take me to jail. But he was probably just trying to scare me some, and I knew it.

I'll be in Gatlinburg this weekend. If the snow holds off, I plan on driving the tail on Sat., hope it's nice and not too busy.

Steve, thanks for the info. Is there a website that tells the road conditions in the area?

www.tailofthedragon.com is the "official" web site. send an email to the webmaster and ask for conditions. ron and nancy are very helpful.

You want believe this. Two years ago, I was driving in South GA. I got pulled by a highway patrol. He got me going 80 in a 55. Well about 6 months later, I live in Charlotte, I got a letter from the NC DMV. The letter stated that I had to go before a judge to keep my license. Apparently in NC, there is a law that says if I get a ticket in any state and I'm going 15 over, then I get my license suspended for 6 months. Well I did that, luckily the judge dismissed it because it was my first ticket that they could find. Point of the story, NC laws SUCK.
