View Full Version : custom exhaust: its time!! (e39)
m_specs 01-09-2004, 10:19 AM ok guys.. i need your input
facing two options.. actually three.. heheh
as you e39's know (and others as well), there is no room to install a muffler on the passenger side for dual exhaust. hence a custome setup.
attached are pics of what i *think* i can do based on the research ive done so far.
1) keep the cats, take out the resignators, and replace them w/ small enough mufflers to mount in that place and run pipes to the rear undernieth the spare tire.

* i was also thinking of not even running pipes, and just leaving the mufflers under the car for a muscle car kind of look.
*note* i have the the m5 rear and will leave the (blk) dual exhaust insert out.
-1 min sketch.. heheh-
2) run mandrel bent piping through the stock exhaust route (drivers side), and mounting two small enough mufflers where one would exit straight through (somewhat).. and then the other go across the bumper to make up for the other dual exhaust tip.
*note- its been done before, but not on an e39 to my knowledge*

ive found that eisenmann makes a dual exhaust setup for the e39 528/540. however i have not seen the price.. but i will find out tomorrow. here is a picture, but it looks like they did what my first option would have been..
http://images.cardomain.com/member_images/9/web/309000-309999/309745_102_full.jpg
notice how they just mounted it into the spare tire well.. i guess its secure enough to handle the weight and expansion of the exhaust.. i dont see any rubber mounts on the passenger side..
what do you guys think?
Greco540 01-09-2004, 10:58 AM The Eisenmann pic is a faux right side. Notice the crimp before the dual tips, and no split before the plate to feed the dual tips. Also, could you imagine the noise coming from it as it never gets passed through a muffler?!?! Trust me its a faux right side.
You second drawing I've seen done on an E39. But it was done tapping into the factory OEM muffler and then sent to the right side. Good luck, and dont forget. PICS!!
m_specs 01-09-2004, 12:20 PM ohh.. good eye on the crimp.. yea i noticed that one of the tips on the right side wasnt functioning.. but i wasnt sure if the other still worked or not.. thats a bunch of crap if you ask me.. hahahha
so the second drawing youve seen done huh? was it on a regular bumper, or an m5 bumper? im sure the m5 bumper has way more room to do this b/c the regular bumper meets directly w/ the spare tire well. i wonder how they mounted it.. hmmm~
Greco540 01-09-2004, 01:30 PM This guy did a left side M5 exhaust, tapped into the right cylinder and ran it to the right side...
mikemaster 01-09-2004, 06:37 PM Go with the first option. At least half a dozen people have gone this route, and have liked it. That is my plan before summer hits, but I may try to find an m5 resonator with the 2 outlets to quiet it down a bit.
shragon 01-09-2004, 06:42 PM i say option 1.
m_specs 01-09-2004, 11:07 PM ok guys.. i put myself in a crappy position.. i thought that by using my contacts at HkS, i could get a pair of sweet mufflers for my custom exhaust.. heheh
so i picked them up today (below is a picture). my plan was to replace the resonator w/ the mufflers, creating a dual exhaust.
http://www.hksusa.com/images_products/L_1148.jpg
heres a link incase the pic doesnt show. http://www.hksusa.com/images/?id=1148
unfortunately, the tips are welded completely to the can.. so i cant cut them off and extend piping..
(explanation for HKS purchase - 1) sweet deal, 2) sound quality.)
so im goin w/ option two.. running both mufflers through the drivers side and exiting at a slant. - its either that or the whole muscle car look and welding something to make the tips face down.
heres a pic of apexi's dual n-1..kinda what my setup will look like.. evosport put the mufflers up to my car today.. and it actually didnt look too bad.. hahahaha

let me know what you think guys
oh yea.. if this setup doesnt work w/ my m5 bumper, the bumper will be for sale next week.. its brand new w/ trim and exhaust insert. not painted (but can be) and never installed. will sell dirt cheap if this doesnt work out. =T
540i6 01-09-2004, 11:29 PM If youre going to do dual tips go with the true setup the first pic. :)
Greco540 01-09-2004, 11:48 PM m_specs, what HKS and other similar manufacturers call mufflers are nothing more than packed resonators. See if HKS has some 6" round x 18" long resonators and put 2 for each side like in your first pick. That should do the trick. Then pick up some sweet stainless tips and have the custom work done.
SecretAznSauce 01-10-2004, 01:25 AM man your car is gonna be loud as heck!!! we installed the n1's before on a s14. it's loud!! IMO, just my opinion most of these mufflers are glorified glass packs. just my opinion, though I really like option 1. I will see what my exhaust guy say tomorrow. He does a lot of work for us (if you know what I mean). let me know on the bumper!
m_specs 01-10-2004, 02:00 AM just checked the website.. no resonators.. however, there are silencers.. heheh.
iforged 01-10-2004, 03:22 AM Greco540,
Are their any undercarriage shots of the dual exhaust on that black 5 series. I am installing my M5 kit next week and want to do the dual exhaust setup as well. M-Specs let me know how your install goes. Also what body shop painted and installed your M5 kit?
m_specs 01-10-2004, 05:38 AM the kit isnt painted yet.. hence it hasnt been installed. but if you want... we can both do the install together. its not that hard really. .. ive already done a swap of the front to sell to my friend.
i could have done what that blk 540 did, but evosport didnt have any stock m5 exhaust left. im not about to go and look for one AND spend more than i have to at this point..
540SportinVA 01-11-2004, 11:50 PM I just replaced my stock exhaust on M5 wit a Supersprint X-pipe and Kellener exhaust. This combination makes an awesome sound, I have finally brought the "rumble back to the 'hood"!!! You may want to see if Kellener makes an application for a 540i or one that can be customized.
iforged 01-12-2004, 07:06 AM Eisenhaus.com has the new dual exhaust muffler setup for the Mtechnik rear bumper for the 540i 6 speed. That is defintely the one I am going to go for now. If anyone wants I have two Magnaflow mufflers with M5 looking tips for sale. $120 each muffler.

Take lots of pics bro!! Personally I'm contemplating the whole swap trunk floor thing for a true quad exhaust...
m_specs 01-12-2004, 01:33 PM dang greco.. im sponsored by a body shop, and its still gonna cost me a sh*t load to do that floor swap.. thats why its out of the question for me.
ive decided to do true dual exhaust, however only on the drivers side. i will be getting the breyton rear lip to instead of installing the rear m5 bumper.
sOO~ m5 bumper for sale. as you all know.. brand new (bumper, trim, and exhaust insert).
m_specs 01-12-2004, 01:35 PM oh yea. i looked into that eisenmann dual exhaust.. it is WAY too expensive for what it is... you could do a custom exhaust and rip out the trunk for that price.
iforged 01-12-2004, 01:42 PM Its actually not that bad in price, and I did not want to have to rip out my spare floor in case i want to sell this car ever. I think it is an interesting designing and I just ordred it. Seems to need a little modification on the M5 dual piece to make it fit . :D
Sloloco 10-01-2006, 12:34 AM Hey iforged you seem to be holding on to some luggage there! Although i think it would be cool for me to list all the sick cars I've owned...it's just tacky. In case you want to see, it would look like this...
2000 540i M-sport
2006 Dodge Charger R/T
2000 Mercedes E55 AMG
1992 LX 5.0 Maximum Motorsports race/show car
etc. etc. etc.
Oh and I dated a model once too but like I have always said, there's no future living in the past!
Cheers

you bring back a thread from JANUARY 2004 solely to insult someone and you think iforged is tacky? :shifty are you drunk or something? it doesnt matter, either way youre a moron. and fyi plenty of people list some of their past cars in their sig with :sold: beside them. whats wrong with that? it gives some additional insight into a persons taste in cars, what theyve come from and whats in their garage now. next time if youre in need of some drama, go turn your tv to lifetime
