View Full Version : 525 Wind Noise?

Does anyone else have obsessive wind noise in a 95 525i? Any ideas on the cause/solution of this? Funny thing is I can't feel a draft coming through any of the windows/sunroof. Although the noise isn't noticable with the stereo turned up-Its those quite rides that get most annoying.

Thanks,

Show Time...

Well there could be a couple of things....
1st has the front windshield ever been removed and reinstalled? If so they may have not sealed it correctly.

2nd - the sun roof seal will make a hell of a lot of noise if the seal is getting bad.

and lastly the window trim more than likely is getting old. where it seals against the windows. That will cause major wind noise. I have all my trim removed right now to black it out and I have major noise. But when I taped the gap up when it rained the wind noise went away......

hope that this helps..

Offtopic, will 6.5" component fit up front? I remember us talking, i just have sourced MB Quart Q-series but are 6.5" down low

I was thinking about the windshield, however since i bought the car used Im not sure if its been replaced.

The noise seems to be coming from the front of the car so for now im going to rule out the sunroof seal.

The window trim I think would be a good start, plus I'm always up for buying new trim parts. Where would be a good place to purchase it? And how much of a PITA is it to install?

Thanks Dogger for help :D

If you can get the part # of the trim piece you need (off of the part or on the ETK), BMA can get pretty good prices on OEM parts. www.bmaautoparts.com

Ya 6.5 will fit in the front kickers. You will probally need an adapter plate though. You will also have to file the mount post down flush. But also remember that the speaker depth can't be more than 2 7/8 or they will not work. Check my post in the audio section. It has picks of the kickers.

Kicker RS6.5 fit with very little modification. I went to Alarming Sounds (Rancho Cordova, Ca) and picked up a pair of 6.5 speaker adapters and modified them to fit the kick panels. I started out by removing the backing. I will DynaMat them and put the OEM pad back over the DynaMat. The I started by filing down the OEM mount points and gained about 1/8th of an inch. The Kickers are about 1/4th inch deeper than the OEM

After removing the OEM Pad I soaked the panels in the bath tub with some dawn soap and hot hot water to get the glue of of the kickers so the DynaMat would stick....It a pain in the ass....

I cut some DynaMat out using the OEM sound pad as a template..and after applying the DynamMat I re-glued the OEM pad..You can real feel and hear a difference with the DynamMat applied....

Then the modified speaker plate was attached and the speaker mounted with 1" #8 Bolts and #8 Nylon Nuts. There is just enough room to hold the nuts under the speaker plate to tighten them. Also almost forgot to mention...I used 1/2" door foam between the plate and the speaker to help seal it.

After finishing both kick panels I trial fit them. They are tight but with moving some of the OEM wiring out of the way the kick panels mounted up with no problem.

Do a small test... tape along your window trim..the lower trim from under the mirror to the rear of the door. Use 2" blue painters tape. Then drive the car and see if the wind noise is gone or at least is lower. Then you will know if you need the trim or not....Also do not rule the sun roof seal out.

Hmmm okay thanks again for the advise Dogger..the window trim on the DS is new, since that was the window which was broke when someone decided they wanted my DVD player. I am going to try the Tape method and see what happens this weekend.

I do have two more questions perhaps you or someone could help me with?

The gas tank door flies open if I start driving before I lock the doors, is there a way to stop this? It becomes quite annoying when 20 people have to tell me my gas tank door is open, but I do appreciate their help.

The Next problem seems to be the factory (Alpine) alarm. I bought the remote, since the car didnt have one when I purchased it, and programed it to the brain. Everything seems to work fine; top button locks/unlocks the doors, middle arms the alarm, bottom is panic. However it seems that when I come home and arm the car for the night everything is fine. When I leave for work in the morning and go to unarm the car the alarm as turned its self off somehow. The doors are still locked, but the LED is not flashing and the siren does not chirp (on the disarm). Any ideas on this?

Thanks in advance for the help,

My '01 540 had a nagging wind noise too. I did two things to correct it , but don't know which stopped it!

First, I found the ventilation intake plennum chambers on both sides of the engine compartment where the filters reside have water drains in the rear bottom. one of mine was jammed open with leaves. Now I check them periodically and clean them out. The potential problem here is developing a Helmholtz resonator.

Second, The car was missing a couple of the rubber pads underneath the body for the jack points. Those were replaced. It sounds crazy, but I read on some BB that if they are off, the holes in the body structure cause a resonance.

So, if you are missing some of those jack pads, I would replace them, and check the drain in the ventilation filter plenums.

the aero kit is a AC Schnitzer. i'll have the complete kit on when the side and rear arrive from BavAuto hopefully soon. The front is AC Schnitzer.

Looked in the ETK and didn't see any pads for the e34

Never seen any rubber jack pads on an E34...

I sent an email to Patrick at BMA parts...He said he can get them (jack pads) but needs a part number for them. But from an '01 540 that Norm is talking about to my '95 525 I think those jack pads might have come after '95. I'll test some of the other wind noise reduction methods this weekend inbetween the stereo install while im waiting for things to dry. Isuppose if I tape around the sunroof with painters tape this will tell me if gasket is leaking?

BTW if anyone is in need of a factory Alpine changer from 95' 525 let me know I'm getting rid of some extra stereo gear thats taking up room.

Well I didnt have time to try and eliminate my wind noise-I was out looking at condos all weekend. What great fun, I would have rather been working on the bimmer. Anyhow since we're on the subject of wind noise, what are peoples general opinion on wind deflectors for sunroofs? Worth it? Not worth it? they look stupid? etc....

Thanks
