Could you guys fill me in on the area?

I'll be going to William Patterson University for one semester. Could I get by without a car? Anything I should know?

AIM if you want : BMWe30iS.

Thanks.

jersey is not a place to be without a car. everything will be far by comparison. to us a half hour ride to go anywhere is the norm. you will find it difficult without a ride. wayne is a nice area so i wouldn't be too worried about that. and it gets really really cold and we get snow..

you need a car in jersey

hit me an IM when you roll in bro i leave here on the 19th and wayne isnt far from me at all

and a 30-45 minute ride isnt far at all to go somewhere

congratulations. my bro just graduated from WPU! Wayne is a congested area that has public transportation available. so you wouldn't need a car in Wayne but it would help. you could get stabbed on NJ transit buses.

You got it, study abroad. I could have gone for a year, chose only for a semester :D

Thanks guys! I'll keep my options open regarding a car. I visited my girlfriend in Delaware and I understand that a 30 - 45 minute drive to get somewhere is the norm.

Joe, I'll hit you up when I move out.

Thanks again.

I think I'm going to start looking for an E30 318 to drive around in :)

Any ideas on where to look?

I'll have some transportation since my girlfriend will be in DE, but it's gonna to big of a mess to ask her to drive up so I can go look at a car.

right - you wouldn't survive 10 minutes with the NJ/NY border closed. :D

doesn't your bread and butter come from NJ too? :biglaughb

Jonathan Chan,

bring a nice heavy jacket and start shopping for some snows, jersey is a great place - nothing like california....thank god. :buttrock :biglaughb

we get snow storms and that's about it in jersey....mudslides, riots, earth quakes and black outs are something that NJ doesn't have to worry about....instead we have some of the most strict cops on the roads, BS taxes and pretty cheap gas. :D

Hey Ron, thanks for the tips. I've been stocking up the sweaters and warm clothes.

Speaking of cheap gas and taxes, what fees am I looking at for registering and driving a car?

I found an E36 318i in PA that I might be buying for use when I'm in NJ.

to register my car this year, it's only $43 for my '98 323is - I can't imagine an E30 would be any more. in 2002 it cost me $50 even, age plays a factor here. Also, if you buy your car in PA, don't pay the sales tax in Pa since you'll also have to pay NJ sales tax at the DMV when you register it as a new (to you) vehicle.

NJ state sales tax is 6%, the only non-taxable items in NJ are:

Paper products
magazines (monthly issues)
non-carbonated beverages
non-ready to eat food - ie steaks, bag of rice etc.

gas is averaging $1.46 for regular and $1.65 for 93 octane (yes, 93 :D). All gas in NJ is full service by law, I still pump my own but don't get caught. :)

When you're local and settled in, we'll brain wash you into thinking that Jersey is the shit and you can then join our bmw cult. :D
