View Full Version : SCCA/auto-x questions...
NoSoup4U 01-02-2004, 04:04 PM a) When is the first official auto-x for this region, including the BMW CCA auto-x school?
b) When is Evolution I and II? IIRC, it was around February sometime; but, I forgot where to sign up and if it is local enough. Anyone interested in caravaning to it?
c) I would like to reserve a number with the SCCA; problem is, I have to sign up first for SCCA membership, which I am sending in. However, I need a membership number to fill out the WDCR/SCCA form to reserve a number. Do I have to wait until I get my SCCA number, or can I go ahead and do both at the same time?
d) I can sign up for SM class, correct? Technically, I am not legal in it because I have 3.2L and it only allows 3.0L f/i'ed vehicles. But, I am not competitive, so no one should really care, correct? If I ever do become competitive, what will happen to my classification?
e) Is there anyway that I can be considered SM2 if there is absolutely no way to sit in the rear seats of the coupe now?
f) I hear people talking about co-driving. I would like someone experienced to co-drive my car with me, to help me get better. Is this what co-driving means? I would like someone to be able to drive my car and tell me what they think is the best method of driving it. Does that make sense?
g) Does BMW CCA offer the ability to reserve numbers through the season as well??
Thanks,
James
FT@SGP 01-02-2004, 04:14 PM a) Early April is school, and late April, firts Auto-x (but I am not 100% sure yet)
d) you should sign up with SM2
g) we are still thinking of doing so.
vjlax18 01-02-2004, 04:15 PM I want #18 :)
a) When is the first official auto-x for this region, including the BMW CCA auto-x school?
Check the link for the '04 schedule. It isn't final, however, and changes may or may not be made. http://www.autocrossers.com/
b) When is Evolution I and II? IIRC, it was around February sometime; but, I forgot where to sign up and if it is local enough. Anyone interested in caravaning to it?
The DC region has it scheduled for sometime in April. It'll be at FedEx Field again, so no need to caravan anywhere. http://autocross.com/cgibin/viewcal.cgi?Active
c) I would like to reserve a number with the SCCA; problem is, I have to sign up first for SCCA membership, which I am sending in. However, I need a membership number to fill out the WDCR/SCCA form to reserve a number. Do I have to wait until I get my SCCA number, or can I go ahead and do both at the same time?
Craig G. will probably allow you to sign up while waiting for your number. It can be verified prior to the event anyway.
d) I can sign up for SM class, correct? Technically, I am not legal in it because I have 3.2L and it only allows 3.0L f/i'ed vehicles. But, I am not competitive, so no one should really care, correct? If I ever do become competitive, what will happen to my classification?
Yes, you can. You're also SM legal, though.
e) Is there anyway that I can be considered SM2 if there is absolutely no way to sit in the rear seats of the coupe now?
See above.
f) I hear people talking about co-driving. I would like someone experienced to co-drive my car with me, to help me get better. Is this what co-driving means? I would like someone to be able to drive my car and tell me what they think is the best method of driving it. Does that make sense?
Ahem. Hello, James!
g) Does BMW CCA offer the ability to reserve numbers through the season as well??
Fatih? I'd like number 31, please!
James, do ALL the autoX instructional events you can. I am going to smoke your azz next year!!!
:stickoutt
FT@SGP 01-03-2004, 03:09 PM LOL, I did not say we will institude number reservation. And if we do, I will ask for $100 up front fee from each of you that will not include event fees :D I doubt Kevin will object to this, once I give his 30% cut ;)
NoSoup4U 01-03-2004, 04:49 PM Glenn -
Let's talk ... of course my post was alluding to you co-driving with me. Let's meet for lunch or something ... Jed always wants me to do these types of conversations at strip clubs ;) ...
Anyway, I was thinking of asking you or John V to co-drive with me to help me become better.
I emailed Craig G. -- I am going to be able to follow his instructions.
I looked at the Evo school, it just says April but with no dates. Do you know when they are going to officially release a date and when sign-up will occur? It will help me plan out my budget for this year.
Fatih -- number 28 please ... hehe ...
magnetic1 01-03-2004, 05:21 PM Email craig Garfield... clgarfield@aol.com he'll advise you on SCCA membership and YNS.
Evo School cant post dates until the Redskins finalize their home schedule..
You can run a E36 M3 in SM2 as evidenced by me and Glenn this year ;) You'll just piss Neil off if you beat him :)

Lunch sounds better, James. I don't think we'd get a lot of talking done a a strip club! :D
I have to say that your car would be a killer in SM. Still, the first thing I'd do is to get the ABS sorted out. That will make a BIG difference.

(rubbing eyes trying to wake up)
I would be up for co-driving with you at an event if you're still interested... We can talk closer to the actual events.

Mostly I like driving fast cars.
vjlax18 01-05-2004, 10:32 AM Oh, BTW John, my car is faster now ;)
jterp 01-05-2004, 03:43 PM James-
I'm an auto-x newb with all the same questions as you. If you find anything out that isnt posted here, can you send it over to me?
I'd like to meet up with all of you experienced auto-x guys at one of the first events - none of my friends are really into beating the hell out of their cars like I like I am and I hate going racing alone.. .. :embarrasm
vjlax18 01-05-2004, 03:53 PM Autox doesn't beat the hell out of your car.
jterp 01-05-2004, 03:56 PM well I've never done it, so I didnt know that. I've done some track events and drag racing in it and that beats it up pretty well.
vjlax18 01-05-2004, 04:04 PM You can beat the car up doing anything, but dragging the car is fasr worse then Autoxing it. IMO rush our traffic is worse for the car then 4 x 60 sec autox runs.
jterp 01-05-2004, 04:08 PM That's good to know- I guess I worded my post wrong -- I plan on getting into Auot-x regardless, but I don't have any friends in this area who are really into cars like I am -- so I'm looking for some people to hang out with in between those 4 60 second runs. :)
vjlax18 01-05-2004, 04:10 PM Just look for purple camo pants and a purple wig... you'll know it's us:confused:
John V 01-05-2004, 04:56 PM Yeah, you shouldn't have a problem discovering the team.BAR guys. They make themselves known :D
John
vjlax18 01-05-2004, 04:59 PM We's be known
yeah, just look for the big red kickball.
