View Full Version : Yet another option: 5spd swap into my car
Preppy 12-30-2003, 01:54 PM Zionsville has a getrag kit for roughly $1500...now where would be the best place to get the work done?
I'm going to keep my current diff. if I do end up swapping the trannies.
Sigh, I'm telling ya'll, this kids dad is so fickle it's FRUSTRATING

So wait... you're possibly KEEPING your car now? :95
Preppy 12-30-2003, 02:10 PM I have no FUCKING clue :dunno  :95:
My dad keeps throwing shit up in the air and I get hit with it
You just stripped your car down to stock too. Didn't you sell some of your parts off? That would kind of suck to have gotten rid of them only to keep your car...
Ahhhhhh... the ongoing car soap opera of Chris and Kimberley...:laugh
Preppy 12-30-2003, 02:23 PM Oh yeah, I sold a few things too. I stripped her down last week and my dad came home and was like 'why'd you do that for?'.....
my expression was litterally :eek2:
now he's talking to me about doing a tranny swap :dunno
Preppy 12-30-2003, 02:46 PM So I am looking at about $3500 max for parts and labor through Pro-Imports, no differential though. This is adding in the cost of ltw flywheel and stuff from UUC too. Sound ok? :dunno
Just end it.
Talk to your dad and say:
"what is the deal? First we talk about a new S4 and now you just want to do a tranny swap?
POOR!!!!!!"
:D
NoSoup4U 12-30-2003, 02:53 PM wait, your current diff is 3.91 isn't it? Why would u want to get a LTW flywheel then?
Good point! 1st gear would be useless except for burnouts and shredding up your tires...
Oh wait. That IS cool!!!!! :buttrock
huggybear 12-30-2003, 03:03 PM i see a drift car in the making...hehe.
Huggybear-
How's Starsky and Hutch? :laugh

Whoa. I wouldn't need one? But what if I were to be swapping out my diff. later on in the summer?

With a diff that short on a 5 speed, a lightweight flywheel would be total overkill and unnecessary.
Check with Dan Martin @ Martin's Auto Service before you commit to a particular shop. It doesn't hurt to shop around, and Dan's awesome with BMWs. Very fair prices, too!

I totally vouch for Dan too!!! Stand up guy and knows what he is doing.
Preppy 12-30-2003, 03:26 PM Just called them. They said they wouldn't do it because it is too labor intensive.

Dan wouldn't do the swap? It may be because it is the busy part of the year for him-prepping cars for next season. Apparently, he does a LOT of track cars.
NoSoup4U 12-30-2003, 03:53 PM Do it with Pat, not many places will guarantee their work with this type of job. Plus, he's close enough to you. Dan is good; but, he's hella busy lately. I spoke with him about the headwork and that was almost 2 months ago and he was booked solid.
Don't get the LTW FLY especially with such short gearing that you have right now. Even if you had a six-spd, I would still recommend against it. Your car will literally rip through first and second gears, even without the flywheel.
If you want power, why not install S52/S50 cams instead. This is a good mod IMO. Should be fairly straightforward as well. PM "Saint" about this one, he did it at Pat's.
Why would you swap out differentials in the future?
NoSoup4U 12-30-2003, 03:55 PM oh yeah, if you are worried about acceleration Chris ...
DITCH THE WHEELS -- those wheels are hurting you more than you think.
Just buy a Honda and be done with it.
Uh...oh...I think I just set myself up.
:D
NoShoE46Grl 12-30-2003, 04:39 PM Hondas are ghey! tee hee!
and u r poor!
Preppy 12-30-2003, 04:47 PM I've just been told that I'd need to swap out the differential :dunno I'm not a mechanic or know much about the differential aspect of the car...
Ok, well thats good news that I dont need the ltw flywheel, it keeps the cost of the parts down.
So with my gearing, what is going to be affected most?
Yeah, I need to ditch the Blitz's, but damn, they're so RARE...and HOT...and SEXY...maybe I should trade someone for SSR Comps or some Fikse's :dunno

Well with your gearing, the big effect is going to be a much lower top speed. Also the speed range in each gear will be shorter. You could be doing a lot more shifting.
There is a site where you can put in your tranny's internal gearing and the diff and it gives you theoretical top speed in each gear and overall top speed.
Let me see if I can find it...
Speed/RPM calculator (http://www.car-videos.com/tools/speedrpm.asp?Car=Select&Num1=245&Num2=40&Num3=17&AxleRatio=3.46&Ratio1=4.23&Ratio2=2.52&Ratio3=1.67&Ratio4=1.22&Ratio5=1.00&Ratio6=&Ratio7=&Redline=7500&Increment=100&B1=Recalculate)
It takes awhile to load...
Preppy 12-30-2003, 04:59 PM More shifting eh :az:
Top speed isn't an issue bc I have only taken her past 110 like 3 times in my life...
Preppy 12-30-2003, 11:18 PM Oh snap! Spring break. My car is going to be dropped off at Pro-Imports for a tranny swap (and hopefully differential swap if i can provide the money for that). My dad promised me this time so he better honor it. *maybe i should get this down in writing* :shifty
So if i were to look around for a used diff., which one should i look for?
dave is cool 12-31-2003, 12:16 AM Hotness
Preppy 12-31-2003, 12:28 AM You post whore ;)

Preppy 12-31-2003, 10:07 AM Yeah I am having the getrag kit from Zionsville sent directly to Pro-Imports.

Preppy 12-31-2003, 08:46 PM Whoa. Transformers movie in 2005?!!?!?!!?!?!?!?! OMG OMG OMG! :D
NYQUEENZ 12-31-2003, 09:34 PM I hope it comes out Shyt looks tight.. any tarilers?
dave is cool 12-31-2003, 09:37 PM If that's the movie I'm thinking of, it looks gay as shit.
NYQUEENZ 12-31-2003, 09:44 PM Filming: (9/17/03) There is currently no production start date for this project. Given the amount of CGI work that will be necessary (in addition to ambitious "practical" effects), this movie will probably take at least 18 months to produce from start to finish. Reportedly, the Transformers will be (mostly) practical, physical effects/props on the set, embellished by or replaced by CGI in sequences where practical effects aren't... practical.
Based Upon: (9/17/03) This live-action movie will be based upon the popular line of robot toys produced by Hasbro since the early 1980s that "transform" from recognizable machines or animals into giant robots. The toys have previously been adapted to television as a few different TV series (with the original 1984-1987 series being the most popular) and as an excellent animated feature film in 1986, featuring the voice of Orson Welles in one of his last performances. This film is most definitely considered to be the first in a potential series of live-action Transformers movies. Specifically, the characters in this movie will be based upon the original 1984 line-up, although there may be a few later Transformers added, if they serve the story.

Teuton 01-01-2004, 10:50 PM Chris,
Consider the ZF transmission as this is the one that came on the 328's. There is nothing wrong the the getrag but it's not as stoutly designed as the ZF.
Pete
PS-Someone correct me if I got it backwards (ZF vs Getrag).
Preppy 01-01-2004, 11:06 PM I know the getrag is not up to par with the ZF, but that extra $500 that I will be saving will be going towards the differential...I hope. But a lot can happen between now and March 12th (Spring Break!) and also, I could make the mistake of purchasing the 'other' transmission kit :devillook:
