For the 5 lug conversion... are the E28 hubs the same as E30M3? What other parts might I need? I'm planning on:

E28 hubs, 540i brakes (13") I just need to know that the E28 hubs fit, and if I'll need any ancilliary parts to go with that aside from brake parts.

Thanks,

Alex

Follow up- an old search shows Stu saying that E36 front componentry will work?

Why must the strut housing be swapped?

the e28 & e30 M3 hub (wheel bearing assembly) will fit onto the e30 spindle, I have heard that the E30 M3 brakes can then be used (but I can not verify this).

The E36 uses a replaceable shock (as opposed to the e30's inserts.) that bolts to the spindle/brake caliper mounting assembly.

What are you using for the rear 5 lug conversion??
As that will dictate what is best of the front!!

If you are using e30 M3 rears then go with the e28/M3 front hubs.
If you are using e36/5 (compact or Z3) rear trailing arms (or even just the drive flanges) then use the E36 front suspension/hub assembly.
This will keep the front & rear wheels offsets the same!!

if you switch to the E36 front suspension, does this make any changes to geometry or such?

what have you done on your E30s suspension?

what turbo's did you use for your twin turbo? (you should come look @ the FI forum  )

Zenon, don't jack my thread. Just send him a personal message. This is why the archives suck, just this reason. Look up "five lug conversion" and you see one post posing the question, someone jacks it and then it's all about wheels, or friends saying hi. Nothing personal, this is why there is about 2% valuable information on this board and 98% BS.

Now-

Glenn, I was going to leave the rear as-is. I'm buying custom wheels so I can get any width, any drilling, any offset. So, I ask,

if I were to go with E28 fronts, what parts would I need to order?

Can I keep my new E30 bilsteins in there?

Thanks again,

AL

You just need to order a E28 front wheel bearing as they are a 1 piece unit like the stock e30 (integrated wheel bearing mounting flange from SKF), so this doesn't touch your shocks at all.

I'd prefer to have matching front/rear wheels though.
Do you have any info (a link even) on the brake upgrade that goes with the E28 5 lug??

Glenn, the upgrade is one that my friend did on his 535is. He used brakes from an E34 540i. The car stopped better than any I've ever been in.

Thanks a lot!

E34 535i or E28??
I didn't think the E28 had enough offset in the hub to run E34 discs!?!?! Just from looking at them.
Post some pics if you have them.

here is a pic of stock E30 M3 brakes.
See how the disc doesn't have much off set (15-20mm ???)
This will be the same with the E28 hubs, the problem with E30's is the steering knuckle is really close to the back of the disc, so if you put a disc on with more offset it will hit the knuckle, and I know E34 540's are 76.1mm (front to back) where as the E30 M3's are maybe ~45mm.

Glenn, I'd love to fit an AEM big brake kit from a honda. I just need some disks so I can make some dimensions, and then caliper brackets. There has to be a larger disk with the same offset. I don't even care about bolt pattern as I can drill 4*100 over 5*whatever only touching one hole in the 5 bolt pattern.

Think you can dig up that cad file on the brackets? ;)

Thanks a million.

"Think you can dig up that cad file on the brackets?"

I'm just waiting for your E-mail addy.

The discs I used were 305x26, you machine the centre hole to 120.5mm (from 115) and they slip over the E30 hub flange.
I then made a rotor hat from 8mm thick high tensile steel and used the 6 threaded holes on the rotor to bolt the two together with grade 12 countersunk hex bolts (m12x1.25).
