Please post if any of you are interested, but we need to cut off around 2:00 to finish our Xmas shopping....:noel:
The Beastmaster 12-05-2003, 04:31 AM I need to install my dual 100 shot NOS system. Anyone know how to install the buttons on my steering wheel?

Where are you guys going to be doing the work?
DesmoBob 12-05-2003, 02:13 PM what do you guys usually do about the drained water/coolant?
i tried to catch mine in a bucket, but most of it ended up on my shirt, arms, and right ear... not that i would have known how to dispose of it had i actually caught anything. :embarrasm
IslandS62 12-05-2003, 02:46 PM Reid: We'll be using my garage, unless attendees have objections and would prefer to use Woody's Garage.
I THINK that auto shops are supposed to accept old coolant, probably for a fee, but we will need to catch it and haul it :( If we are only doing 1-2 cars and that is too much trouble....well...I have a big backyard. :devillook
I would like to put some washers on the rear shock lower mounting points, so as to avoid this:
http://members.roadfly.org/shahin/shock2.jpg
http://members.roadfly.org/shahin/shock3.jpg
and I have a water pump and metal thermo housing arriving for the Coupe as well.
Woody: Maybe we should try and get the gears for the odometers...maybe Mike will know how to do that. I can get the thing apart and out of the car, but am nervous about disecting the speedo mechanism. I think the gears are $100 though :eek!
If you guys need to do work, please post waht you want to do so we can be prapared...
The Beastmaster 12-05-2003, 02:52 PM I don't think you need the whole gear set for the speedo. It is usually 1 gear that goes bad. I believe gears are @$30 each. Voytek may have them as he does speedo repair. Here's the DIY for the speedo fix on a 6er. http://www.z3bimmer.com/OffTopic/E24Bimmer/OdoGear/
Bob, no need to catch the coolant. Just park over the nearest storm drain! :biglaughb
Gene V 12-05-2003, 03:16 PM Have to work Sunday so don't think I'll have time to get involved, but would like to stop by and say hi if someone can pm me the address...
I think coolant can be legally flushed down the toilet...
IslandS62 12-05-2003, 03:55 PM I think the 13th is a Saturday...
I have had the cluster out of the car already...well the 325, not the 318is, and the 325 needed 2 out of 3 gears. Not sure what the 318 needs. I looked at the link you provided and the 6er looks much more difficult than a 3 series. If I had a 6er I'd just say FORGET IT!

Water pump, metal thermostat housing, rear shock bolt washers, odometer gears. Is that all we need to do?
If the odometer comes apart anything like the one in the link, we can easily tackle that.
IslandS62 12-05-2003, 04:56 PM Is that all we need to do?
We need to Porter Cable Reid's car :D

Your Porter Cables are no match for the months of dirt and brake dust on my car.
Not to mention the spot on my trunk where I hit my car with a kendo stick by accident. :devillook
thrlls 12-06-2003, 04:11 AM I'm not sure if Mike will make it, since the 13th & 14th are his only free days. He mentioned he wanted to go to the beach before going back home. He said he would come around 3:00 or so. I'm meeting with him on Tuesday, and I'll see if he can come earlier in the morning, and go to the beach later.
It's not looking good for me, I will prob have to wrk :(
I'll know for sure next week.
As for the coolant, we could take it to a recycle station, or absorb it with some sorbant, place it in a plastic bag and throw it out with the trash. As long as it is not in a liquid form it can be thrown out just like your motor oil.
No drains, No backyards, No toilets!.....here kitty kitty :firedevil
IslandS62 12-06-2003, 05:22 AM eh, too many stray cats around here anyway:devillook
They give my dog fleas
thrlls 12-06-2003, 01:06 PM Oh yes! We must not forget about Caeser!
It will do the same to him as it would a cat.
Def have to absorb and place in a plastic bag.

IslandS62 12-06-2003, 05:40 PM Thrlls: Do you have the part #s for the sunroof catridge and the E30 M3 offset bushings by chance? Dean can't find them...you can email with him directly

What exactly is a "sunroof cartridge"?

Bav Auto lists the part number for those as "31 12 9 061 222".
http://www.bavauto.com/bas/assets/product_images/hardpart/31129061222.jpg
IslandS62 12-06-2003, 08:21 PM Thanks for the part #. E30 sunroofs are notorious rusters. The entire mechanism can be replaced as a unit by removing the headliner. Its called a "cartridge" apparently.
The Beastmaster 12-06-2003, 10:26 PM I have this part # from my ETK 54 12 1 906 710 it is for the cover. Can't seem to find the part # for the entire unit.
thrlls 12-07-2003, 04:32 AM Thanks Reid, that's the same # I emailed Dean. As for the sun roof, I'll take IslandS52's advice, and see if I can get a clean, rust free (not free rust) sun roof from a dismantler somewhere. I called a place today, but they want to know exactly what all the parts are. They want me to take apart my roof to see what is needed. I'm afraid to do that, because I think I'll need to torch that sucker out! :flamethro
Gordon L 12-07-2003, 06:10 AM All you need to do is replace the sunroof panel which is secured to the sunroof mechanism by 6 torx bolts.
thrlls 12-07-2003, 02:10 PM Thanks Gordon.
My problem is trying to get the headliner open to get access to those bolts. Adolph from BME has tried to remove it when the previous owner had the car. He gave me another panel, which is NOT rust free, but has free rust. He kept saying "good luck"... how comforting :(
Gordon L 12-07-2003, 02:26 PM Thrlls:
I don't know why there's such a big problem with removing the sunroof headliner, I've only done it numerous times. I do have a rust free alpine white sunroof panel but it's not for sale, it's a spare for my alpine white twins '90 M3 &'91 325i. Maybe I just need to show you how to do it one day.
thrlls 12-07-2003, 08:37 PM Sounds good to me!
I think it's because of the rust, I'll keep working at it, but if I can't get it open, I'll email you.
Are you sure you don't want to sell your rust free panel?
The Beastmaster 12-07-2003, 10:13 PM How's about this for a DIY on a 318is? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33617&item=2446586788
thrlls 12-08-2003, 12:57 AM Mahalo for the heads up, but the shipping will probably be more then the item. Since mind is still good, I'll pass.
Now if this was a rust free sunroof, I'd jump on it!
thrlls 12-08-2003, 12:59 AM Duct tape looks so much better than rust!
I hope it clears up by the weekend. :az:

Ken recently replaced the sunroof on his E30M3...cost was $60 including shipping from a junkyard in Washington...I can get you the address if you're interested...:D
thrlls 12-09-2003, 02:57 PM I am VERY interested!
Please send me that address.
Mahalo
Gene V 12-09-2003, 10:49 PM thrlls,
Here's the scoop:
Ken paid $50 for the sunroof and they quoted him just $10 for the shipping...he thinks they didn't realize how much the shipping would actually be, so the next guy from Hawaii will probably pay more...
Just send an email to cara@mechanicmasters.com requesting what you're looking for...Ken says they're pretty busy, so you may have to keep after them...
Gene
Gordon L 12-10-2003, 12:34 AM I've recently dealt with Mechanicmasters for some miscellaneous E30 parts, took way over a month to get all the parts. Let me just say I'm glad I finally got the parts and because they're unprofessional I won't deal with them again.

Well, that doesn't sound too good...
thrlls, forget I mentioned those guys...
thrlls 12-10-2003, 09:13 AM Mahalo for the info Gene & Gordon.
Hey there is nothing like trying again. I'll check them out and see what kind of CS I get from them. Although I am a stickler when it comes to CS. Hopefully it won't be a bunch of BS. I called this other place www.oklahomaforeign.com and the guy said he thinks he has one, and will call me back with the price, still waiting! Next!
Gordon L 12-10-2003, 03:30 PM Thrlls, what color is your car? If I'm able to find one, knowing what color you have would eliminate refinishing and help reduce your cost.
IslandS62 12-10-2003, 04:14 PM He needs Diamond Black Gordon.
Gordon L 12-10-2003, 04:35 PM My guy TR Duffy from Bimmersouth said Diamond Black sunroof panels are hard to find and WILL need to be refinished because they fade so badly. I believe he has all colors except for Diamond Black and they are $50 plus shipping.
The Beastmaster 12-10-2003, 06:03 PM Woody's entire car need refinishing so any color sunroof would probably do! ;)
thrlls 12-10-2003, 06:09 PM Mahalo Gordon for inquiring for me with Bimmersouth.
I just purchased a complete assembly from www.activeauto.com it should be here next week. This did cost a lot more then $50, since it's coming from Tennesee. They wanted $155 to ship to Hi, but I had them ship to a friend in Ca. for $50. The assembly cost....gulp! $150.....yes $200 for a rust free s/f assy.
I wasn't going to get the complete assy, but I felt some rust under the liner, so I figured I just as well get the whole thing now and replace everything.
Gordon: I may be calling on you to help with the installation when it gets here, if you don't mind.
thrlls 12-10-2003, 06:12 PM Beastmaster, you are 100% correct!
I hear Macco in the making!
Gordon L 12-10-2003, 06:31 PM [Gordon: I may be calling on you to help with the installation when it gets here, if you don't mind. [/B][/QUOTE]
No problem, in fact it's pretty easy.
IslandS62 12-10-2003, 09:14 PM Jeebus Woody, you are investing a lot of loot into this 318! Why don't you just buy mine from me? ;)
SoOOoo...Are people actually going to be showing up at my house on Saturday?
If you are coming or would like to attend, please post along with the work you would like to do. I will PM everyone who posts directions to my house tommorrow evening or on Friday morning.
One of you coming from Hawaii Kai may need to pick up parts form Dean, Dean, or both :)
The Beastmaster 12-10-2003, 10:40 PM Isn't the cassette @ $250 new?

Not really, so far about 3K. But if this is going to be a track car & daily driver, it has to be safe and decent looking. Besides, this is the fun part.

Beastmaster; can you do this? I can't make it, as I have to work
on Saturday :(
See all of you at the dinner!
IslandS62 12-11-2003, 03:10 PM Shall we cancel then and re-schedule for a different week?

I'll be busy in the morning with an eviction and won't know how long it'll take. That's the second one this week. Yes, you can call me Scrooge. Merry Christmas!
Maybe it's best to re-schedule.
IslandS62 12-11-2003, 05:42 PM Dang, I'd be too chicken to serve eviction notices without a shotgun or something. Ever see those repo man documentaries on TLC?
Be safe!
thrlls 12-11-2003, 06:20 PM I thought he was going to borrow something from you IslandS52, to serve the eviction!
Re-scheduling sounds good to me.....only because I can't make it!
The 21st is autox day.
IslandS62 12-11-2003, 06:24 PM How about the weekend after Christmas? (27th?) It will give me an excuse give Anna so I won't have to go to the Mall.

Don't you mean "MAUL"...:D
Sounds good to me!
So are we re-scheduling? I like the 27th too.:buttrock
IslandS62 12-13-2003, 04:11 AM Yes...unless changed in the future, DIY #4 will be on the 27th.
Details TBD.
thrlls 12-23-2003, 02:58 AM I guess I'll have to cancel out of this up coming DIY. :(
Something came up this evening, and I won't be able to make it. I may be able to come after 12:00 if you guys are still there.
IslandS62 12-23-2003, 03:48 PM Please post if you are planning to attend this DIY day. What you would like to do and on what car. Please PM me if you need directions. Keep in mind that our "experts" may need to attend to accomplish the work that you want to do!
If there is not sufficient interest this weekend, we can re-schedule again for a later date.
Have a Merry Christmas everyone!
IslandS62 12-26-2003, 02:35 PM No one has responded to this thread so I assume no one needs this DIY. Unless I hear otherwise today from some folks I am going to CANCEL tommorrows DIY.
Have a happy new year everyone. Hopefully we can do another successful DIY in January.
Oops...sorry I havent been here in a while so busy shopping and stuff and working. But I'd like to reschedule is that ok :dunno ?...it has to do with no money and all...lol:biglaughb , too much christmas shopping...
