View Full Version : A Little (early morning) Drive through the Mountains...

It's about time for another drive, but I wasn't digging the insane amount of traffic on our last one, so there's going to be a slight change of plans for this next one...

I'm planning on heading up whoever wants to come with and leave from our usual spot at Perimeter Mall off Ashford Dunwoody Rd. at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 14th. There will obviously be less traffic, but another advantage will be less people. Not that I don't enjoy leading our large drives, but a smaller one would be nice for a change. Plus, we'll be back in town just after lunchtime.

So, who's in? :)

Sounds like a good idea Geordie. Hopefully it won't be freezing. Plan another one like this after the first week in Jan and I'm in for sure. I'm going back to CA mid December and coming back with my car in Janaury.

I'll go, but I'm not driving down to perimiter. Just give me a call when your on 400 and I'll join up with y'all.

BE AWARE: Cold tires + Cold roads = VERY SLICK. We'll have to be careful.

But who knows? Maybe I'll motivate myself out of bed.

No way Jose! I will never be able to wake up at that crazy time especially on a Sunday.

Any chance that we do it later? Maybe some other date?

This is the point. Less traffic, less people on the drive.

We'll still do our "regular" drives, but I want to do this one. It will be much more fun, trust me.

Did that have anything to do with the 10,000 other cars blocking our path? ;)

That was because I was crusing in 3rd. Ask the guy with the Dinan 5 what happened when I stayed in 2nd :D That is within 500 of the redline but who cares :)

Florian

P.S. Those sweepers required quite a bit of power not only agility from the car. On the Wolfpen gap the car was in its element.

Nah, with less traffic, I'll probably do an extended drive, hitting all of the roads I've been meaning to get to in one sitting.

count_schemula
12-01-2003, 08:10 PM
Leaning towards yes. There really is NO traffic at all up there until about 10am.

My tires SUCK in cool weather though... 32-40 degrees even. :(

Visibility will be much greater as some of the the greenery will have gone away for the winter. We can see around corners and some of those U bends!

WytLytnyn
12-02-2003, 05:52 PM
When you guys do these drives, do you "scout" the roads with one of the guys in the pack (for cops, obstacles, traffic, etc.)?

Having driven mountain roads in West Virginia and some of the roads around Helen, you never know what is around the next bend....

Ron17
12-02-2003, 06:06 PM

We've always taken a "let Geordie cross that bridge when he gets to it" approach.

True. No scouting, really. Not many cops up there, and really no obstacles to speak of. It's relatively safe. :stickoutt

thats actually pretty scary, i've known people that have died like that (not in N. Georgia though) be careful, cold weather and performance tires aren't a good mix in the twisties.

Hmm, still thinking, might have to sleep on it some more. But I am leaning towards the positive on this one. I plan on having a good deal of steam built up from 4 finals 96 hours prior, so a drive through the mountains would do me well.

OT, your avatar rocks Adam. Stewie is the greatest cartoon character ever created IMHO. Family Guy rocks, adult swim at 11:30 is where its at M-TH.
