Does anybody know how many miles before your change oil light comes on, since it was last serviced by the stealer. I want to change it myself this time, does anybody know a good link for a oil change diy for a 02 e46 325i?
What kind of synthetic oil should I use? Any favorite brands? Also what weight would be good for southern california. Ive done oil changes before, but Im still a virgin on this car and I want to do it pretty much by the book. If anybody knows a good diy that would be great, one that shows you how to reset the lights and stuff too.
Thanks in advance!:)

It's super-simple. Roll the car up onto Rhino Ramps (they're plastic, very sturdy, not expensive, and low enough to go under E36 M3s).
Now, before you go and drain the oil, remove the oil filter housing top and make sure you have the right filter and enough oil (6-7 quarts).
Roll under the car and undo the screw to the door on the plastic undertray (e46 only). The drain plug is up inside there. Allow at least 5 min for the oil to drain. The filter is an easy drop-in replacement, takes about 30 seconds. Lubricate all the rubber parts on the filter and o-ring with clean motor oil. A light coating will do. Replace the filter housing top and torque to spec. Replace the oil drain plug. Refill with 6 quarts of BMW Synthetic, Mobil 1 synthetic (5W30 or 10W30). Start the car and look for oil leaks.

Cool thanks for the info!
Only one more thing, how can you reset the internal oil change mileage counter so it doesn't think it needs an oilchange in like 50 miles? I remember somebody was talking about it once, something about connecting some pins together to reset it. Anybody know how?

Not sure about the E46. You may want to try the E46 forum.
Or you can buy the reset tool. They do make one for the latest BMWs, don't they?

Overkill,
Try this link: http://www.distools.com/instrument_cluster_reset.htm
It will walk you thru the process. No tools needed. Good luck!

And make sure you get a torque wrench.
We have a small article on our site about oil change and motor oil.

Is there a procedure for doing this on E36 models? I'm assuming this won't work on my 93 325is.
also look at www.e38.org....could give you some tips:D
Fok. So I need to either play MacGuyver or buy a 50 dollar tool?
Dammit!
