View Full Version : 3 questions about buying wheels 318ti 95'
Gabrielle 11-17-2003, 03:55 AM 1st. What advantage haves to get the rear wheels somewhat more wide than the front ones (I understand is common in RWD)
2nd. Doesn't same size wheels(all around) help the balance of a car taking corners?
3rd. Wich wheels are the best (light strong and affordable)
ssr's comp?(great look and perfect sizing)
Konig Helium?(quite affordable and light)
Adr M-sports? (awesome look)
AcSchnitzer's?(can I go wrong with in house tuners?)
All tips will be appreciated
thanx for your time. Am a 2 weeks old bimmer owner and proud of it ^_^
themadhatter 11-17-2003, 07:55 AM here's a shot for ya:
1. staggared wheels offer more understeer. choosing equal sized tires all around will give you a more neutral setup.
the '95 m3 had 235/40/17's all around. excellent for most people.
and the 96+ m3 had 225/45/17's up front and 245/40/17's in the rear. this new fitment was "engineered" by the Lawyers of BMW, apparantly too many people where spinning out their cars.

3. ssr comps are great wheels, semi-solid forged and brilliant looking. good choice.
Konig Helium? - hmmm, don't know too much about them so I'll keep my mouth shut on them.
ADR m-Sports - weigh a ton, do not buy if you're looking for performance.
ACS Type II, Type III - excellent wheel choice, strong for cast wheels and manufactured by Rondel. A good looking wheel for for the E36/5. The Type II is the older of the two, the Type III is more common on the E36. I have yet to see a Type IV on an E36.

Gabrielle 11-18-2003, 01:36 AM glad to meet you Ron and
Thanx for the welcome ^_^.
I am really happy to be part of the bimmer family.
Did you meant less understeer?(since there is more grip on the rears)(bad for drifting, good for straight lines. Am I wrong?)
what would you ratter?
235's all around? or staggered?
I thinck am going for the ssr's since the acschnitzer are so damn expensive
Keep in touch and thanx for the tips
themadhatter 11-18-2003, 12:03 PM the pleasure is mine:
can't go wrong with the SSR's - great product and the price has come down over the years.
if you're going for performance, a 17" wheel is where it's at for the E36.
I wanted neutral handling so I am running 245/40/17 Pirelli Pzero Rosso all around without a problem on a set of Kosei K1's with a complete ACS S3 Sport Suspension.
I have run staggared setups before with no complaints, but those wheels were for the bling and not for the performance oriented like my current setup. I have auto-x'ed this current setup but not my staggared setup. I am very happy with the balanced feel and tossability of the car at speed around the course. Throttle steer was easy to work with as well as not having to worry too much about pushing. If I were to buy tires again though, I think I'll shy away from the Pirellis and go with a set of S-O3's.
M5Yates 11-18-2003, 02:14 PM I use 235/40-17 on 17x8 et 38 rims. My car is far from stock, but anything much bigger will rub even with fender rolling.

Jim@tirerack 11-18-2003, 07:09 PM Everyone is on the money. The same size all the way around is the way to go. Bang for the buck the Kosei K1 Racing at 199.00 is a heck of a good deal and has been used by many club racers. The SSR Comp in the 17X9 is the ticket and even lighter weight.
If I can help let me know.
Thank you and welcome on board.
schosports 11-22-2003, 10:05 AM Here's 18" BBS CHs on my 96 ti. I autocross with stock BMW 15" wheels and stickey Yokohamas.
M5Yates 11-22-2003, 10:38 AM Schosports,
What size tires do you use on the 18" BBS rims?

225/40/18 all around.
Here's a autocross pic with the 15". Looks weird to me still.
Edens 11-25-2003, 10:29 PM I have a 1995 318ti sport. I'm running Breyton Inspirations
17x8.5 Front
17x9.5 Rear
225/45ZR17 Front
245/40ZR17 Rear
No rubbing at all. (no rolled fenders)

Jared 12-04-2003, 04:54 PM I'm running 19x8.5 front and 19x9.5 rear. My fenders are rolled and pulled out, but there hasn't been any metal added or paintwork necessary. My suspension and sways have been adjusted to compensate for the extra rubber in back regarding handling, as my car isn't quite stock either and I need the wide tires.
Go with equal size front and rear if you can. Besides handling benefits, you also can rotate directional tires at least front to rear to get a little more life out of each set, whereas if you stagger your setup, you have to dis and remount each time you want to rotate.
P.S. its odd to see another ti with CH's on here! Nice choice! ;)

ClubSport332ti 12-24-2003, 11:15 PM I have 225/18/40 and 245/18/40 and my rears rub. I dont want to roll the fenders though so I am kinda stuck and dont know what to do.
themadhatter 12-25-2003, 11:35 AM you should have picked up a set of 245/35's or even 255/35's for your rear. you would have gotten a shorter tire and less rubbing issues.
why don't you want to roll the fenders though?
ClubSport332ti 12-27-2003, 08:50 PM Ron I guess I am affraid of the rusting issues and paint craking that I keep reading about. It is my first time on the east cost and this Rust thing scare the crap out of me
