Before I begin, you'll note the "Caps Lock" key on the left side of your keyboard, somebody must have hit it when you weren't paying attention :devillook

Biggest problems with E34 525's (particularly 93-95 model years with the M50TUB25) are the water pump and the thrust arms and bushings.

The water pump was OEM on E36's and E34's with the M50 engine, and it doesn't last very long. The only way to tell if it's still in the engine is to pop the pump out and look. The reason this is such a pain in the ass is because the orange pump (as it is known) will basically fall apart without warning. You will have less than 30 seconds to see the temp go up and kill the engine, if you don't make it in time you'll warp the head. You can pretty much write it off it that happens.

The thrust arms are no big deal. www.racingking.net has them for 80 bucks/side with 7-series bushings pressed in. These are the ones you want if you have to replace them.

The E34 has a reputation for being a very solid and reliable car. You can check out other common maintenance issues at www.bmwe34.net - It's an excellent site.

Hope that helps-

Ballpark for sure-

Check for rust in the wheel wells and where the rear bumper meets the quarter panels- Crap can get between the bumper and the body and wear away the paint causing rust.

Are you in NY like the city or what's the closest city up there? (I'm a western NY guy myself-)

you can check for an average price here: http://www3.nadaguides.com

agree with abakos' comments.

the best thing to do is to go check out the car in person and find a local bmw mechanic to have the car checked out.

great car! I love the touring! Only thing is that if you really want that, you have to MAKE SURE its got the Alusil block. This is what happened to me. I bought my 530i without knowing anything about the whole Nikasil issue, but luckily it had the Alusil installed.

Also, about the M3 engine....its is a royal pain in the ass because you would be goin from a V8 to the I6 so ALOT of things have to be changed. You'd be better off...WAY better off just starting off w/ the I6 model and upgrade from there. You could even swap in the M5 engine into the 525/ 535. Beast! The M3 engine components bolts right up w/ the mounts in the I6 models.

IMO, just get a nice alusil 530 or 540 and enjoy it! Unless you want to go badass and get the 525 and find a nice M5 engine for a transplant.

Now that I think about it, I'd probably go back and look into a 525 and do the M5 transplant!

yeah your right it just looks so sweet and i doubt that the rep for this car knows enough to get under the car to let me know which engine it is. along with the 525 and 535, i would consider an alusil 530 or 540 if a sweet deal comes along :buttrock
