Thanks guys

H&R springs with a half coil cut off to make up for the K-Mac camber plates in the front. Bilstiens all around.
K-bars and adjustable end links coming this month or next.

The wheels are OZ Novas- 18 x 9 in the front and 18 x 10 in the back. They are no longer made according to OZ's web site, but I saw several sets from other manufacturers at 8 Fest that were real close in appearance.

As a note to those who know the Portland area, there are 3 840s within a bit over a mile of the Hart/Bany corridor between 160th and 185th. We are trying to find out if that is the highest number in a similar area in the US.

There is a Dinan Twin Turbo on E-Bay right now from Lake Oswego-- about 15 miles from here.

The picture is from the local Ducati dealers parking lot where the 8 was joined by an M coupe and an M5 while we were there!

I think he got lowering springs and cut half a coil off because of the camber plates.

The more and more I see the 8, the more and more I fall in love with it... your car is dead sexy.

TerryY

Thanks
You have to cut a half coil from the bottom of H&Rs or the nose points up with the addition of the camber plates. They add 3/8"+ of lift to the nose. With Dinans it does not make any difference which end you cut because they are not progressive wound.

Even the tail looks low now!

bump for the second hottest model bmw ever made (first being the 7er :D)

TerryY
01-02-2004, 12:36 PM
Thanks for the bump.

But even though I agree that the 7 was #2 sexiest BMW I bet you are thinking E38 and I am thinking E32.

I suppose that is because I believe that the E31 and E32 were the peak of classic Teutonic style and a certain Brunhilde like round edged chubbyness started creeping in with the E34/E38.

Still everything prior to the Bangle butt is now looking better than the current BBimmers.

What's the widest tire you can fit on an 8 series, 285?

TerryY
01-09-2004, 11:33 PM
285 seems to be about the limit without modifying anything.

Seem to remember a post on one of the boards where someone had sucessfully fitted 305s. I don't remember if it was 18 or 20 inch though.

Tranceshark
01-11-2004, 01:11 PM
Must have been an error in it.

Terry - Where are you finding parts for your 8er? A buddy just picked up a 91 850 w/ 30k on the clock and wants to mod it. Any idea on a good intake and chips? Can't find an application for an intake for the 850 on Dinan's site.

ajw45
01-30-2004, 03:27 PM
'91 with only 30K miles ! Nice!

The only intake mod that really exists are the intake manifolds from dinan. The 850 already has a "cold air intake" inherent in the intake design and K&N filters have been shown to LOOSE power on the 8. The intake manifolds from dinan are honed and polished yielding a bigger, smoother intake path that's been proven to gain hp on the dyno. Pretty expensive option though for about 10-15hp. Conforti chips can be purchased from turners which is a better bang for the buck.

TerryY
01-31-2004, 12:09 AM
I have a set of 850 chips done in Europe sitting here in my desk drawer-Email me- If they add as much bang as their 740/840 chips do then it could be fun. Much cheaper than Conforti or Dinan.

The intakes are at pretty much max for power. The Exaust too.

The trick stuff all seems to LOSE power on the Dyno with the 8.

TerryY
01-31-2004, 12:41 AM
The real tricks are a differential swap to 3.15 with the 6 speed and 3.64 or 3.91 with the auto--M5 is supposed to be a bolt in.

If I remember correctly the 3.64 reduces the theoretical top end to "only" 177 mph. I can't wait to get mine installed!!

Suspension mods are K-Mac camber plates
H&R springs (have to clip a half turn off the bottom for the camber plates.
Bilstiens all around
K-Bars Which are in short supply. They are done in small custom batches http://www.bmwe31.com (K mac and brake lines here too)

Stainless steel brake lines to tighten up the brakes.

840 brakes--4 pot Brembos in disguise/ Same as 7 series 'Big Brake Kit" or Euro CSi brakes if your budget is unlimited.

18" wheels 285/35s rear and I am running 265/35s in the front right now with no rub-Should be pretty sticky in the twisties with 50/50 weight distribution. (255/35x18 is about the normal limit in the front 245/40 is the generally prefered size)

With those modifications you have an 8 series slot car for track day, autocross or any occasional twisty road you might find.

Should be able to put the fear of "8" in some M3 drivers.

Should be rather quick from stoplight to stoplight too.

Chipped 850 should be about 320+ crank HP but about 4000 pounds wet weight is the handicap.

Out of curiosity What does the M5 weigh? HP?

Tranceshark
02-02-2004, 04:07 PM
3,700pound, 400hp from a 5 litre V8

TerryY
02-02-2004, 10:20 PM
So only 300 pounds lighter and 80 more HP!!

That is only a little over three chubby passengers in the M5 apart!

Supercharger is the only realistic approach to still seeing M5 tail lights for a while:)

ajw45
02-02-2004, 10:59 PM
I'm pretty sure the curb weight of the E39 M5 is right around 4000lbs. The 540 weighs in the 4000lbs arena so I would suspect the M5 is pretty similar if not heavier.

Mblaster
02-03-2004, 03:01 AM
Yea but the E39 M5 boys are crying cause their cars aren't dynoing up to specs, so there. Damn I 'm going to have an 850ci someday. They are so nice.

TerryY
02-03-2004, 09:56 AM
So 8s maybe closer to the M5 than we think. 850CSi may be there!

When I get the gears in my 840 I may have to go look for one to play with. Just to set a baseline of course.

Then I can tell Momma that I'm getting a Supercharger for my little silver Mistress because she really needs one!!

I know this is an old thread.. but I just have to say that although I wasn't blown away with the styling when they first came out, the 8 series is one of those cars that ages gracefully and will always look gorgeous. A true classic.

TerryY
02-13-2004, 09:35 PM
This thread seems to have a life of its own!!

It is always good to see that someone looked at it again and appreciates the 8 series. I am prejudiced of course;)

Oh! Wow! Terry where did you get my 3D Model of the eight series? The base model is a 850i which I modified to a CSi! You can see that on the mirrors and front skirt...
I sent the modified model to our E31 fellow philippe brulet of ClubE31.com. Did you get it there?
Greetz,
Marc

TerryY
02-15-2004, 07:43 PM
Yes sir that is where I got it!!

Looked too good not to share with the young folks here--Nice work!!

Not enough 8ers here to generate much art so when I'm not being lazy I do what I can here to wow the others.

Hope you don't mind.

Tranceshark
02-26-2004, 11:07 AM
No I donīt. Was just wondering...
Hereīs another one...

http://www.vision-motorsport.de/850net.jpg

That is the state of now. Featuring:

CSi mirrors, wheels, B12 hood, Lambo Doors, Cameleon Paint, moving Headlights.......

TerryY
02-26-2004, 10:08 PM
We got the "moving" headlights here in the US as an undocumented feature from BMW!!

Ours look around all by themselves!! Fortunately I got mine fixed for free before BMW ran out of parts and started backordering adjusters.

Tranceshark
02-28-2004, 08:42 AM
Uh Oh! Never had that over here before...
Any ideas why it occured in the states?

TerryY
02-28-2004, 01:37 PM
The headlight adjusters come apart and disconnect from the headlight buckets. The non-US headlights are completely different so you are safe!!

The buckets break when BMW tries to replace the adjusters here too. If you are not real insistant you get to pay $1600 for new buckets!!

I was insistant up front and told the service rep that when he got to the point of calling me to tell me that the plastic broke to call BMW instead. When he did call it was to tell me that they had to keep the car overnight to wait for the the new parts BMW was sending under warranty.
:)

Tranceshark
02-29-2004, 12:55 PM
Well,
at least they come up with an acceptable offer. The reason for me to stay with BMW is their absolutely good customer service. Since I am a dealer, too, I normally get everything done w/o problems. Earlier with AUDI I always had problems because they are stubborn....

Good to hear they are corporative in the States, too!

TerryY
02-29-2004, 03:12 PM
Just don't bring up Nicasil to BMW here any more.

DrifterJay
03-22-2004, 02:08 AM
love the 8 series, beautiful cars. by the way, what is Nicasil?

TerryY
03-23-2004, 01:32 AM
Nicasil is the cylinder lining material that BMW chose for the V8.

Great stuff -Except-- High sulphur gasoline in some parts of the US and Europe pitted it very badly. The motor would start burning oil at an early age and because BMW runs the crankcase under vacuum they would show signs of massive vacuum leakage. Really bad tooth rattling idle and all.

My 840 was run in California and Washington and seems ok at 133,000 miles.
Now that sulphur content is down it should live forever!

I believe All of the rest of BMWs aluminum motors were Alusil lined and not affected by the sulphur content.
