View Full Version : HI: Help! need to change Waterpump. onik 11-14-2003, 04:42 PM Hey guys just was wondering if anyone knows how to change the waterpump on a 94 325:bawl ? or maybe we can do it at the next DIY? The Beastmaster 11-14-2003, 04:47 PM Never done one before. I think we need Dean or Reid to help. I thought the dealer was looking for a 5 spd for you, so why put more money into this car? IslandS62 11-14-2003, 04:56 PM We can probably do it with some guidance. That is a fix I want to learn anyway as I still have the plastic themo housing on my car. Also the 318 needs a brake job and the parts just arrived... Can you wait until next weekend or do you need it done ASAP? Can you drive the car at all? IslandS62 11-14-2003, 05:02 PM Just got off the phone with Dean. He said it's pretty easy but 1) you need to tow the car 2) we need a special tool to remove the fan (he has one though) and we should do the belts at the same time. Don't know if you want to go through the trouble of towing to my house when we are not 100% sure we can finsish the job, and we won't have parts handy. Probably best to take it to a shop. It's a piece of cake. I can do it. :) Anyone else have parts to install? I have a car that could use a wash/detail if anyone wants practice. j/k :stickoutt BTW, John please don't let me forget to bring the window cleaner to the next DIY. Save your money. :) I have the tool to hold the fan in place and the tool to loose the fan (the special tools needed). Do you need to change the pump as a maintenance item or has it already failed? IslandS62 11-14-2003, 05:13 PM OK Reid to the rescue... if you guys need a garage I can probably make mine available on Sunday. onik 11-14-2003, 09:19 PM well the good news is that i dont have to do it right away because it still runs fine but i do need to do it soon...my friend is going to get the parts for me wholesale...probably run me about a hundred bucks i think maybe less...the thing is that i cant get the parts till i get paid which isnt for another 2wks:dunno...the pump isnt that bad but should be done as soon as i get the money, and any help is appreciated, thanks guys your rock:buttrock. Beast: They havent found a 5 spd yet so for now i have to fix this part so that i can have a car...hehehe onik 11-14-2003, 09:22 PM If you guys have any questions you can call me at 349-7108 Oni The Beastmaster 11-14-2003, 09:50 PM Oni, Check this site. Parts are cheap! http://www.eap4parts.com/ Your waterpump runs between $42 (aftermarket) to $68 (oem). IslandS62 11-14-2003, 10:02 PM Don't buy the aftermarket. I heard they don't last at all. I think I read on a thread somewhere that this is a part you should definitely consider getting from the dealer. IslandS62 11-14-2003, 10:15 PM This isn't the thread I read, but it seems like the same info... http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=103506&highlight=water+pump thrlls 11-15-2003, 01:05 AM My tools are shaking and my hands are rusting.....need a DIY fix soon. Especially since I missed out on the last one! I'd like to learn this one too! Hell, I want to learn all I can... Reid: You da man! You and Dean should be the official BMWCCH tech advisors. I agree with IslandS52, you don't want to go aftermarket with this part. The Beastmaster 11-15-2003, 01:36 AM EAP's BMW part does have the same part # as the one in the thread so it should be alright. onik 11-18-2003, 02:51 AM ok sorry guys for not posting sooner checked out the thread...not bad...gonna get the parts locally pretty cheap from what im told by my friend Pump: $50 oem Metal thermastat housign: $25 but just to give an update i get paid on the friday the 5th so hopefully we can do it that weekend? Any thoughts on that? Any advice? Any will help...hehehe:dunno still gotta say that you guys rock! :buttrock onik 11-20-2003, 02:20 AM Ok guys just found out that all the parts is $110 bucks waterpump-$57 alluminum thermastat housing-$28 gaskets and belts-$25 I get paid on the 5th of Dec, Would like to do it on that weekend Could that be possible? Gordon L 11-21-2003, 04:32 AM Oni, in addition to what you're doing you may also want to consider replacing your thermostat since you're already replacing the housing. Thermostats are known to fail and if you don't know when it's been replaced (if ever) now would be a good time for some preventative maintenance. Aloha, Gordon Reid 11-21-2003, 03:38 PM Originally posted by onik I get paid on the 5th of Dec, Would like to do it on that weekend Could that be possible? I'm sure I could find time somewhere during that weekend to help out. John, do you want to install an aluminum thermostat housing at that time? IslandS62 11-21-2003, 04:08 PM If its any easy job, sure. I need to go order the part but I am sure it can be here by the 5th. I am still not sure my house is the best place to tackle Onik's waterpump though. I don't have a lot of tools and supplies here... Are we going to detail your M3? :D Reid 11-21-2003, 04:37 PM Originally posted by IslandS52 If its any easy job, sure. I need to go order the part but I am sure it can be here by the 5th. Are we going to detail your M3? :D The "hardest" part is draining the coolant. I do not have a pan/tub to catch the fluid. I am willing to drive wherever I need to to help out. Our island is not that big. :) Gene, is there any maintenance you need done? <-- Poorly disguised way to lure Gene out so I can check out his M3. ;) The M3 is beginning to look dirty, even by my standards. I'll detail it inside and out... one day.:stickoutt Gene V 11-21-2003, 05:47 PM Originally posted by Reid Gene, is there any maintenance you need done? <-- Poorly disguised way to lure Gene out so I can check out his M3. ;) About all I have to do right now is replace one power steering hose clamp, will need rotors & pads in the future though... I'm probably working Saturday the 6th, maybe looking for an xmas tree on the the 7th...I could swing by though if it's in Aiea, I'm just a stones though away in Foster Village... Nothing really special about the car, Bilstein Sports/H&Rs, JC sw & CAI, SS exhaust, B&M short shift, Sparco strut brace, Eibach sways, UUC TMEs, etc... :D Reid 11-21-2003, 05:59 PM Originally posted by Gene V About all I have to do right now is replace one power steering hose clamp, will need rotors & pads in the future though... Which exhaust is on your car? The Beastmaster 11-21-2003, 06:51 PM Sounds like we need to do a brake & rotor DIY. Gene V 11-21-2003, 07:04 PM Originally posted by Reid Which brake pads are you going to run? Which exhaust is on your car? Since I don't "track" the car I'll probably go with the stock Brembos and stock pads...I tried a set of Ferodo DS2500s, but couldn't get them to stop squealing, plus I'm addicted to the initial cold bite of the stock pads... Exhaust is a Supersprint, nice and mellow with no droning... If you really want to check out my car, PM me and I'll give you my address and phone number and we can work something out...or one of the days I'll find a way to make one of the DIY sessions... :) IslandS62 11-21-2003, 07:15 PM Gene: I know you are more track experienced than I am but I am using the Ferodo 2500s in the rear and Axxis Ultimates in the front and I am very happy with the comdination. I am getting a much better cold "bite" with those pads than I was with the stock pads. Less dusting too. Judicious use of CRC squeal stop has cured the noise for me as well. Sorry about that, onik. Reid - the thread hijacker :az: Gene V 11-21-2003, 07:31 PM I've read good things about the Ultimates and was thinking of giving them a try, was told though by the Cobalt Friction guys that the Ferodos had less squeal & dust, that's why I went with them...I used the Permatex spray on anti squeal, maybe I didn't get them bedded properly... onik 11-21-2003, 11:22 PM Originally posted by Reid I'll send you a PM, so as not to hijack onik's thread any further. I look to be free in the late afternoon until around 10PM on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. :) Where can we meet to do it? Good question. We cannot do it at my house this weekend as a realtor will be over to examine our wall. On a side note, I seem to have caught a cold today and I do not think I will be in to work tomorrow as a result. I *should* be better by the weekend though. :az: onik 11-26-2003, 03:35 AM Bummers dude i hope you feel better! here maybe this will help...:boobies hehehe well i do hope you feel better, a couple of my co-workers are catching a cold i think... as for a place im trying to think of a big area with shade to do it, like a big parking lot :dunno or maybe we can ask........ lets ask IslandS52 if we can do it at his place... *looks at IslandS52* Gene V 11-26-2003, 09:28 PM Originally posted by Reid I look to be free in the late afternoon until around 10PM on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. :) No autox on Sat?... IslandS62 11-27-2003, 09:08 PM I have some things that I need to do around the house on tommorrow (Fri) so I am not going to be able to help out. Maybe on Saturday. I didn't get the thermo housing yet though, and need to get some coolant from BMW Honolulu...maybe next weekend? Oni, if you and Reid really need to use my garage, let me know and I can try and make some arrangements for you to use it on Saturday. onik 11-28-2003, 02:33 PM Originally posted by IslandS52 I have some things that I need to do around the house on tommorrow (Fri) so I am not going to be able to help out.
