Hey Alfa,

In the 70's funky name and color palette years,
Inka = Darker Orange. IMHO, my 2002tii looks perfect in this color.

Ok, I went to this Precision Driving Experience thing at 1:30pm today and man, I had a blast! We drove 330i Sports and after driving this thing, I have officially decided that my next car will be an M3. It was amazing how much lighter the 3 felt compared to my 5 (duh!). I felt like I could do anything in that car. We had 4 instructors and the one that instructed me used to drive F1 race cars.

Anyway, we had a race at the end and I GOT THE FASTEST LAP TIME of the class. I even beat one of the instructors! They gave me this little cone with a Roundel on it that says, "Best Performance" for a trophy. Someone asked if I had done this before (there were people there that had done it before) and I just said, "Well, it's a lot easier throwing a car like that around out there than my 540."

Anyway, I am now hooked on Autocross. I must sell my car and get an M3, then I will start autocrossing and taking more driving classes.

If you haven't done one of these, I highly recommend it!

i went today and did the 330i at 11:00am. My time was in the top 5 (around 22.5 seconds), as was Minsoo's. It was a great time for free.

Any one of u dudes that doesnt try to go to one of these sessions is just crazy. FREE AUTOCROSS? can you beat that?

oh and we drove the 745 for the breast cancer charity thing, and i felt the fear of being carjacked on the route they had us going around on near turner field. sheesh Atlanta. clean that area up!

rwindleyme02
11-16-2003, 12:27 AM
Yeah mine was free. I couldn't test drive cause random people were walking up for test drives. They said they could let me drive a sports wagon. No thanks.

Can't beat free autocross!

Oh yeah, Mark all the courses were different. My time was 24.10 on my course. The best instructor was 23.4.

MGRMLN

Hey Mark,

Great job on our times. Our team would have won (thanks in part to our solid performances) if one of our instructors didn't gather us a 5 second penalty for not stopping in the box. As it was, the overall time were still close even with that massive penalty.

Yeah, I was disappointed in my performance overall though. I should have been able to dip into the 21 second zone and beat the other team's fastest time, but when I got strapped in, the seat was so far away from the steering wheel that I felt like I was driving from the rear seat. A better way would be to let each drivier get adjusted in, do their run and then add up the total team times. This eliminates the "LeMans" style tag offs but, i think it would be better overall.

they should let us short people go first lol

MGRMLN
11-16-2003, 01:43 PM
We actually did line up, tallest to shortest. And theoretically, each of us would scoot the seat up a little as each driver got in. The reality of it was, jump in, click belt, floor gas and go.

punknamedjimmy
11-16-2003, 01:53 PM
i'd be the person that jumps in and couldn't get the seat belt on lol

We went shortest to tallest. I think it helped. I had trouble with the seat belt when I got in cause the instructor fucked it up and it locked.

Anyway, it was a blast. They have one next weekend I think. You could try and sign up. I signed up in october.

You know, like what's supposed to happen when you slam on the brakes really fast or hit something... the thing a seat belt is supposed to do... it locks to keep you restrained.

If you pull it too fast while putting your seat belt on it will do the same thing and lock. That's what happened, the instructor didn't give me enough slack and it locked.

well i knew what you meant in the locking in braking sense but i don't think i've ever done that while putting on a seat belt.

crazy.

crazy.

Well it was a timed tag-team type of thing so everyone was trying to switch drivers as fast as possible. They moved the seat for you, put the car in gear and handed you the seat belt with some slack in it so that you could jerk it and save time. Then they closed the door so all you had to do was hit the gas.

Pretty fun.

Ron17
11-17-2003, 05:22 PM

even if they were manuals, i'm still not picturing this. does the guy hop in the car, make all these changes and then hop back out when you get there?

rwindleyme02
11-17-2003, 05:59 PM
They were autos. Here's how it went:

Team Driver #1 starts off with the car in a square on the track. Instructor in Passenger seat. Driver #1 takes off and does 2 laps. Stops car in square, When stopped, instructor slams tranny into park and hits the seat belt release. Driver #1 gets out and runs to Driver #2, tags him and Driver #2 heads for car. As driver #1 and Driver #2 are running, another instructor outside the car adjusts seat and get seat belt ready for driver #2 . Drive #2 reaches car, jumps in, buckles seat belt. Instructor outside car slams door. Instructor in car puts car in drive and Driver #2 hits gas.

Honestly, the automatic wasn't too bad b/c the course was small enough to where you could have done the whole thing in first. One of the guys tried to be hot and use the steptronic transmission to change gears but he ended up with a very shittly time.

Anyway, it was fun enough for free. Silly, but fun.

Ali
11-17-2003, 06:12 PM
Would they throw you out if you did the following:
1. Put car in Neutral
2. Rev and bounce off limiter
3. Drop into "D"
4. Lightly hold brake as instructors gasp in horror
5. Jump out the car and roll and say the car was going to blow up
6. Get on your cell phone and threaten to call your lawyer

OR

1. Look intoxicated with bottle of whiskey in your hand
2. Hand whiskey bottle to previous driver
3. Proceed to run the course in Reverse while putting your burned cd of hilarious chase musc in the cd player and cranking it to full blast
4. Proceed to roll out the car

punknamedjimmy
11-17-2003, 10:17 PM
or what if you purposely make the car spin and see how many cones you can take out

Ali
11-17-2003, 11:43 PM
and then get out and say "I was supposed to go around the cones?!?!"

rwindleyme02
11-18-2003, 09:18 AM
I'd say the first two scenarios wouldn't be tolerated. As for the spinning out and going off the track, I don't think they had a problem with that. One of the guys there went WAAAY off the track and took out like 6 cones.

As for tearing up the tranny, While I was there, two car's trannies broke and wouldn't shift out of 1st. Another X5 on a test drive went up an embankment and broke an axle. Fun stuff.

Great, now I have 2 things to look forward to this week.

I have an interview Thursday morning - wish me luck! Hopefully this will get me out of public service...

Friday afternoon should be a good release from all the tension I'm building today and tomorrow.

I want to say the 330i sport comes with Michelins stock. My mom just got one (5-speed of course), but I could be mistaken.

I drove the Z4 at Homecoming. Fun, but believe it or not, I found the 330i's with Sport Package to be more fun to drive on the autocross.

The Z4's tend to understeer far too much for my taste.

And of course, nothing is as involving as the M Coupe.

That is interesting since my observations are quite the opposite. I drove 330s and Z4s at Spartanburg and the Z4 was by far the more nimble and involved drive of the two. Hell, it even felt more fun to drive than the SMG M3 which felt pretty heavy and was understeering pretty heavily. Not to mention that it filters way too much from what the car is doing.

The 330i's have less tire and because of this, feel a bit more willing to rotate. Useful during the tight bits on an autox course. More adjustable.

The Z4 is an involving drive for sure, but the larger 18" wheels of the 3.0i sport model make the car feel a bit too over-tired for it's power to me.

As I mentioned above. I think I finally disagree with you about something regarding cars :). Z4s are way lighter and smaller than 330s and for me they are the more fun car to drive. An S54 in that car would make a hell of a drive. But I respect other people opinions :)

There were showroom cars at this thing too.

A new 330i, a Z4, an e39 M5 an e60 545i sport and an X5 (whatever the small engine is).

I sat in the M5 and was happy with the world. If only the battery wasn't dead and I had the key...

Gonna be a good afternoon, if I can just make it through this boring morning.

Ron, it's an M5, it's less than 5 years old, and simply starting that car could be described as a sexual experience. I am in trouble...
